pimpkin®
HELTERBRAND’S HEROICS LEAD GINEBRA PAST COCA-COLAKings win 3rd straight and 5th in last 6 games as “Fast & Furious” tandem back in actionSunday, 15 June 2008 JAYJAY Helterbrand must have been so glad to finally have his backcourt partner back. So much so that the other half of the famous “The Fast and The Furious” combo made sure Mark Caguioa's return to action would be a memorable one by coming up with two big plays in the endgame that enabled Barangay Ginebra to hurdle tough Coca-Cola, 91-84, Sunday night in the Smart PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum. Helterbrand drained a clutch triple that gave the Kings an 89-80 lead and followed that up a few seconds later with a fastbreak layup off his own steal that totally quashed whatever hopes the Tigers may have had of salvaging the game. Those heroics gave Ginebra an unassailable 91-84 lead and capped a sterling all-around performance by the wily point guard, further stoking Ginebra's determined charge for a playoff spot. “He has become a better all-around player now,” said Kings coach Jong Uichico, referring to his ace point guard who finished with a game-high 27 points aside from four rebounds and three assists. “We all know he's a very good offensive player, but he's also been playing defense very well now. So he's getting to a different level by adding assists and defensive aspects to his game.” Chris Alexander's game-high 22 rebounds went well with his 13 points, five blocks and excellent defense on Coke counterpart Jason Dixon, while Caguioa returned from a bout with tendinitis that caused him to miss three games to score 14 points. Uichico also gave special mention to Caguioa. “Humiling lang ako sa kanya ng a few minutes, para dumali ang rotation. Pinagbigyan naman niya ako sa request ko, even though his knee was still hurting,” bared Uichico of Caguioa who played with his right knee all wrapped. All those helped Ginebra to win six of its last seven games, including its last three, to improve to a 7-8 win-loss record and a tie at sixth with idle Talk 'N Text. “Talagang we're treating each game like it's our last game of the eliminations, especially in our situation,” related Uichico. “The players are responding and it's a good sign. We're getting closer, but we're not there yet, so the next three games are really important for us to get close to the top. “I hope we can continue that. Mindset lang naman, eh.” The loss was erstwhile co-leading Coke's sixth in 15 games, relegating it to a tie with idle Air21. With a 9-5 record Red Bull is left all alone at the top, and it could widen the gap should it prevail over Purefoods in the second game Sunday. Donald Copeland, Nic Belasco and Cesar Catli, who equalled his career-high, each scored 18 points and Alex Cabagnot added 17, but the Tigers still lost, mainly when their hustle couldn't quite match Ginebra's when it mattered most. Dixon had 11 rebounds, but he was held to just seven points, matching his lowest output in the season-ending conference which he registered then the Tigers defeated Magnolia 106-92 last May 9. He went into the game averaging 25.1 ppg. Even Ronjay Buenafe, the highest scorer among rookies with an 11.5 ppg norm, was held to just three points. But Buenafe's lone trey came to move Coke, which trailed by as many as 41-59 early in the third period, within 80-84, still 2:23 left. Then came Alexander's follow-up of his second straight offensive rebound and Helterbrand's triple for Ginebra's nine-point lead, 1:02 left. Coke refused to wilt just yet, with Copeland sinking a charity and Cabagnot booming in his own trey off Dixon's fourth offensive rebound to whittle the deficit to just five, still 55 ticks left. Then came Helterbrand's strip, snatching the ball away from Copeland's hands and scooting home for the uncontested layup that proved to be the game's final and most decisive dagger, only 14.3 ticks left. (NCo) The scores: Barangay Ginebra 91 -- Helterbrand 27, Caguioa 14, Alexander 13, Valenzuela 11, Tubid 8, Menk 8, Artadi 4, Mamaril 4, Crisano 2. Coca-Cola 84 -- Copeland 18, Catli 18, Belasco 18, Cabagnot 17, Dixon 7, Buenafe 3, Talulava 3, Macapagal 0, Dimaunahan 0, Telan 0. Quarterscores: 23-24, 51-41, 71-60, 91-84. Quote Link to comment

pimpkin®
MANILA, Philippines - Barangay Ginebra's Jayjay Helterbrand was chosen anew as theSmart/Accel- PBA Press Corps' Player of the Week for the period June 9 to 15. Helterbrand earned his second straight citation from the media association after making his presence felt last week for the Gin Kings, making him the only player since Talk 'N Text's Mark Cardona to be consecutively named for the weekly honors. Gin Kings mentor Jong Uichico said that Helterbrand is becoming a well-rounded player, thus helping his team win pivotal games. "We all know Jayjay is a very good offensive player, but he's also been playing defense very well now. So he's getting to a different level, when he added assists and defensive aspects to his game," Uichico said. Uichico's observation is not without basis. In Wednesday's 89-81 win against Purefoods, Helterbrand tossed 17 points, including seven in the last 3:02 of play, helping the Gin Kings post an 11-2 run that stopped the Giants. On Sunday, Helterbrand scored the key shots that lifted the Gin Kings against Coca Cola, 91-84. Helterbrand connected with a triple, giving Ginebra an 89-80 advantage and when the Tigers tried to rally and moved within 84-89, the Gin Kings guard scored on a layup from his own steal in the last 14 ticks. Helterbrand eventually finished with 27 markers, four rebounds and three assists in that game. Those victories helped the Gin Kings to win six of their last seven matches are now waving a 7-8 slate that tied them with the Purefoods Giants and TNT Phone Pals for the sixth to eight spots. Agent_mulder
I guess that they are starting to finally adjust to their new acquisitions and even coach jong had rotated his players quite well the past few games. Alexander might not be scoring heavily pero he is doing a good job in rebounding (leader nga sa liga eh) and in shot blocks so lalong hindi takot tumira sa labas ang mga team mates nya knowing na he is there to take care of the rebounding chores. Menk did manage to provide some quality minutes for them in their game against coke, sana lang matapos na 'yung pag-iisip nya ng trade para din maka-move forward na ang team. Artadi is also doing a good back-up for them, iba ang energy ng team pag nasa loob sya, sana lang ma-develope pa nya ang outside shooting nya, para ala-Bal David na siya hehe... Quote Link to comment

Di pa rin siguro nawala sa isip ni Cardona yung na thrown out of the game siya nung laban nila ng Semi-Finals. Quote Link to comment
