The Marison Hotel

I stayed in Marison Hotel. The room was clean and pretty good. Bed was comfy, aircon was strong and cool. Breakfast buffet is typical and okay. Oriental Legazpi was under renovation at that time. I hope they have EV charging stations by now.

+1 for Marison Hotel. Worth the price. Breakfast is okay with enough selections. Will definitely consider coming back. Bicol is one of the places I surely love to revisit.

Seeing the majestic Mayon is a must.

We also stayed in Marison Hotel. Enjoyed the nearby restaurants and its bar area on the top floor. Location is good for the areas we visited in Legaspi and the view of Mayon is good.

The Cagsawa Ruins

The classic Mayon photographic composition frames the volcano cone above the Cagsawa Church belfry ruins at Barangay Busay, Daraga (approximately 25 minutes drive from Legazpi Airport / city).

The church was built by Franciscan missionaries in 1587 and destroyed by the catastrophic 1 February 1814 Mayon eruption, one of the volcano's most-severe recorded events. The pyroclastic flows and lahar deposits buried the church and the surrounding community; only the belfry survived, protruding from the volcanic deposits.

The site today functions as a Philippine National Historical Landmark, with the surviving belfry maintained in situ against a manicured park foreground. The Mayon cone rises directly behind the ruins — the composition that has, for more than a century, defined the province's visual identity.

Visitor access: park entry fee (municipal rate). Best photography windows: sunrise (approximately 5:30-6:30 am; cone typically clearest) and late afternoon (~4-5 pm; warm-light framing).

Sumlang Lake

The alternative Mayon composition frames the volcano cone in mirror-reflection above Sumlang Lake at Barangay Sumlang, Camalig (approximately 30-40 minutes drive from Legazpi). The Sumlang Lake register sits at the "still-water reflection" alternative to Cagsawa's "ruin-foreground" classic. Photography-attentive visitors typically shoot both.

Lignon Hill Nature Park
