hitman531ph
Aside from pop and rock, new wave and jazz fusion were particularly prevalent in music in the Philippines in the 80s. WXB102 was the bastion of new wave. Power105 (DZBM, formerly, Super Tunog Pinoy DWLM which used to be a Tagalog speaking format before converting to new wave) followed suit. 99.5 RT also played new wave and even tried to do an all underground new wave format which failed in 30 days and reverted to its pop and new wave mixed format. RT miserably failed the all new wave format to try and capture the market of NU107 which played new wave as WXB 102 was silenced. Power105, however, played jazz fusion every Sunday, while playing new wave all week long. As the 80s drew to a close, Power105 became BM105 which played world music and later became Crossover. Kiss FM also played jazz fusion on Sundays with Quiet Storm while playing pop and dance music the rest of the week. New wave was beginning to fade out in 1987. However, the bastion of jazz fusion was WK-FM "Where jazz never sounded better." Unfortunately, by late 1984, WK was shut down by its own management (BBC - Banahaw Broadcasting Corp now ABS-CBN) to accommodate the newly pirated Helen Vela from GMA 7. She was promised a radio show and management of the station and WK-FM died to give way to DWOK. Few weeks after People Power, ABS-CBN took over and changed format to pop and the station became DWKO.Towards the late 80s, Citylite 88.3 was born and those who missed WK had jazz all week long, although Citylite later dabbled into New Age. Citylite was later bought out by the group that owns Magic 89.9 and Mellow 94.7. It is now Jam 88.3 99.5 RT was heavily dependent on its American Top 40 format in the 80s and well into the 90s. It started with Casey Kasem's American Top 40 and it also had the Weekly Top 30 and Robert W. Morgan's Special of the Week. Eventually, only AT40 remained and later changed to Rick Dees Top 40 by the late 80s. Since RT was using Billboard Hot 100 as its guide to make the playlist, they were able to find songs, new wave and pop alike. However, there is what was called the RT Classics where no other station played the songs. The RT Classics were mostly light rock which did not see record distribution here in the Philippines. New Wave, Jazz Fusion and RT Classics.... all found in the three separates 80s websites Edited September 8, 2008 by hitman531ph Quote Link to comment
