  2. While I don't consider myself a martial artist, I humbly suggest that you choose the discipline that will suite your lifestyle. It's nice to learn by starting first with the art of fighting with bare hands, unarmed. Arnis is useful but the thing is, you don't carry a stick with you all the time. You'll never know, one day you're at a mall and suddenly you find yourself alone in some dark alley on your way home and 2-3 gangbangers are about to bash your head. What will you do? You don't have the sticks with you?

It is a common misconception that Arnis or Kali is only good when you have a stick or a knife, a misconception common to those who do not practice the art. These two FMA does have empty hands conversion that enables its practitioners to fight even without holding a weapon.

Most of the street fights or attacks done in the street are either multiple and armed. And most of the Kali and Arnis system trains for these kind of situations. They train weapons first then if you advances, you are taught how to fight empty hands. The reason is simple, if you know how a weapon moves and its trajectory, then you will know how to defend against it. For example, if an attacker holds a knife like he is holding an ice pick or when he is holding a knife like when one is cutting onions, you would know what will be the trajectory of the knife, thus make the necessary actions based on the situation.

We, Pinoys have the best weapons system in the world, that even the US Marines have included Pekiti Tirsia Kali in their training. Ask Pinoys in the US how big FMA is and you will be surprised. It is sad that FMA is not as popular in its country of origin.

By the way, the FMA featured in Bourne Identity and The Hunted is Sayoc Kali. Chris Sayoc, the head of the school, unfortunately is based in the US and doesn't have any school here. They have a practitioner in Cavite but my contacts told me that his techniques are no way comparable to the original Sayoc Kali.

  3. calling you SIR... it's a generation thing...to show that you deserve respect...please don't take

any offense...i know in today's cynical world SIR... may seem that I'm patronizing you...

YUNG TIPONG BINOBOLA KITA... to get to your good side...NO MALICE INTENDED...

anyway... thanks for the info... at least i know now that burmese boxing is far more brutal

than muay thai... ( consider the rope wrappings... as oppose to boxing gloves...)

    thanks again leloup...

Don't worry none taken. It's about patronizing me. Medyo I feel so old lang if someone calls me Sir. :D

That's what the Burmese coach also said. And that's the reason why Bando will is difficult to promote because of its brutal nature.

  4. nx for again for the correction... I remember sir leloup you did say tha wai kru was ceremonial...

I recently read in a back issue of Inside Kung fu/ or was it Blackbelt???... in which bando...had some animal

forms... similar to kungfu...and had weapons like the kukris.. stick... long pole... etc. It didn't even remotely

resemble muay thai... as you said in a past post...burmese/bando similar to muay thai??? I am

confused....maybe bando is not burmese but nepalese ... Some clarifications would be greatly

    appreciated... Thanks...

Please, don't call me Sir, just my nick will do. :D . Frankly, I'm not that knowledgeable about Bando or its origin. I just had an opportunity to talk with the coach of the Burmese muay thai team last SEA Games. He said that Burmese boxing/Bando's techniques are similar to muay thai but they are just using twisted cotton ropes as handwraps during matches and not gloves. And most of their team members are originally Bando practitioners. He also said that there are Burmese bando fighters who cross the boarder to fight muay thai matches in Thailand because the money purses are bigger.

  5. Going back to the topic in Thailand do we have a Muai Thai gym in south coz I live in BF homes Pque. sayang Ultra is really far from me.

There's an MAP chapter in Paranaque and Alabang. I'll check with my team mates regarding the details. If you work in Makati, there are classes in Red Corner Intercon Hotel, but their level of training is for beginners, you might get bored. You can spar with the instructors, though.

Anyway... going back to the topic... Would muay thai find self-defense applications ONLY

in unarmed combat??? yes it is quite effective but against knives... clubs and such???

I recently read about bando.. a burmese art similar to muay thai..but it's training encompases

weapons...wasn't muay thai derive from wai kru.. or some ancient art using swords etc...???

IF JUST FOR DISCUSSION... SIR PLAKAT...SOME INFO... TNX...

I don't know in other gyms, but most of the training we do at MAP are for competition/fighting in the ring. And there's a big difference between ring fighting and street fighting.

Wai Kru is a ceremony giving honor to the teacher and to the school. YOu are referring to Krabi Krabong, the sword art of Thailand. If you want to learn how to defend against knives, sticks, etc. our very own Kali/Arnis is very effective, might even be more effective than Krabi Krabong. The common misconception is that when you don't have any stick, Kali/Arnis is useless. But the techniques of these art can be applied in empty hand and can be effective against weapons.

  6. Angel locsin??? where???? one thing about her is she's very athlethic... ( think she was a varsity

swimmer at UST... i might be wrong)...What appeals to many... the obvious being her hot looks...

is her being without pretentions....HINDI PA INGLISERA!!! at 'cowboy' sila... so roughing up in a sport

like muay thai fits her to a T...

Try going to MAP HQ in ultra this Saturday around 5 to 6p.m. But her schedule might change without prior notice :D .

She's not that pretty if you're going to look at her but she's very down to earth. Unlike some celebs who acts as if they own the whole place. There's even this one celeb who sprays disinfectant on the trainers just because they're sweaty., :thumbsdownsmiley:

  7. Oh nice how about training with Buakaw tongue.gif

Difficult choice. Buakaw is my idol, but Angel Locsin is a hot chic, specially when she's all sweaty and her shirt would cling to her body.

  8. one student per instructor ba dun?? or one on one ba ung pg'train??

Yup. Its a one on one training. But pag me kasabay ka, sabay sabay kayo sa warm up. The pad training, partner play, clinching exercises are one on one training. Another bonus or should I say incentive is that a lot of celebs train at Ultra. I think every Saturday or every other saturday, Angel Locsin would train there in preparation for her telenovela with Robin Padilla. That is if , celebs is one of your thing.

  9. Yup as long as you'll pay them and I don't think that's going to be a problem....... Why don't you teach Muai thai here.

That's good to hear. Some gyms don't accept farangs unless they know you or you were endorsed by somebody they know.

I think I'm not worthy to teach the art. I'm a former officer of Muay Asso. of the Phil. , the POC and PSC recognized governing body of Muay Thai in the Philippines, so I help in propagating the sport.

  10. Here you go and good luck

    76/1 Moo 5 T. Saochagok, A. Bangkle, Chachoensao 24110

    Telephone : (66) 38 584 151

    Thank you very much, Bro!

Hope Por Pramuk will accept me as their student.

  11. Oh Buakaw Por Pramuk the main man yeah I met him several times and we know each other. We used to visit Catherine Cafe and Posiedon with some friends.

They accept foreigners and I've seen some whites after my few years of training. Maybe for some reason foreigners are not encouraged to join because these Thais can only speak limited english.

In Bangkok there are tons of Muai Thai Gym and you can go and enroll there for a cheap price, Chiang Mai is another option and there are also gyms in Kanchanaburi (but this is 1.5-2 hours from BKK).

As for local Muay Association ? nope I never trained with them.

You're a lucky man. Meeting the main man in person.

Actually, I've trained for a week in Kaewsamrit last year though I'm very satisfied with their training I want to try other gyms (being in Bangkok, it's very expensive). I have a friend who's one of the fighters of Lanna that's why it's on my list. I've met Ole Baguio Laursen while he's here in Manila and his Legacy gym in Ubon Ratchani is also on my list. Is it ok to ask for the contact information/person of Por Pramuk Gym if you have it?

  12. Then i'll call you Master Leloup from now on!!! smile.gif specool.gif I admire you for your enthusiasm in MMA considering u hav day job...Hope to see u as one of the fighters of URCC/MMA in the near future... by the way, where are you practicing your Muay Thai skills?? Yaw-Yan is it the same as kickboxing?? can u pls enlighten me Sir Leloup about that...

Thanks, but I don't deserve the title. :) I am just and will always be a student. The URCC thing might already be a distant prospect as I'm already 31 and just 3 years short of the GAB imposed age limit.

I train at the HQ of Muay Asso. of the Philippines in Ultra. Yaw-yan is an FMA that focuses on kicks and strikes, you can call it Filipino kickboxing. Both arts are can give you a good base if you want to be a striker.

  13. Hmmmmm....You have a point there!! specool.gif Il take ur advice.... smile.gif By the way, what discipline are you practicing now?? (juz curious) smile.gif have you tried competing??

Like you I started in TKD way back in High School and College. My base style is Muay Thai, been doing it for 4 years and counting. For striking, I've cross trained in Yaw-yan and Boxing. For grappling, I've cross trained in Judo and BJJ. Yes, I've competed in Muay Thai, boxing and judo. Not yet in MMA. My day job prevents me from training seriously for MMA.

  14. Mirage_hankvoyager Posted Today, 03:27 PM

Can anyone here advice me the locations of different schools of martial arts and the discipline their teaching???? Before i studied taekwondo and currently im into boxing at Elorde Gym.... Im more interested into mixed martial arts.. hope sum1 can give me advice... Tnx in advance!!! smile.gif

Suggestion lang, bro. If you are interested into MMA, it would be best if you have a base style, then incorporate other martial arts to complete your game. Do you want to be a striker? Then learn boxing, muay thai or yaw-yan. Stick with it for at least 2 years to have a good base, afterwards cross train in a grappling arts like BJJ or wrestling. Or if you want to be a grappler, just reverse the process. Magiging half bake ka kung pagsasabayin mo.

Then your choice of school will depend on your location. It should not be more than one hour from your home or office or else baka tamarin ka nang mag-train.

  15. When I was a Kid I used to train Tai Chi Chuan since my late grand father was a Kung Fu/Tai Chi Chuan master back in China.

Then during my high school days I tried Yaw Yan in Pasay for a while. Then continue my Muai Thai training in Por Pramuk Gym in Thailand for 6 months straight (6 days a week, 8 hours a day).

I tried few boxing after going back to Manila (Elorde Gym) while I was in college and few trainings of Muai Thai with a friend while we were studying.

After college I went back to my former Gym in Thailand and did Muai Thai again and tried to compete in Nakhon Ratchasima stadium. I was able to win several fights and lost some fights too but it's a good experience and I'm happy with it.

Today I'm in Manila and working in a private company and by March next year I'm planning to go back to Thailand and visit my master and train there again.

As to join some fighting again ? I'm not sure yet coz I don't want my ass to get kicked by them again lol

Bro, do you train with Muay Asso. of the Philippines in Ultra?

How were you able to train in Por Pramuk? I heard that they are not accepting farangs. I've always wanted to train there (actually train along side Buakaw). I'm planning to go to Kaewsamrit in Bangkok or Lanna in Chiang Mai during next year's Holy Week. But if they are open to foreigners, might go there instead.

  16. For those who know...What's the difference between muay Thai and Burmese Boxing??

what about way kru??? ( did i get the spelling right???) some info tnx!!

Burmese Boxing and muay thai are very similar. The main difference is that muay thai is safer because they use gloves while burmese boxing is done bare knuckled. That's why only a few practice this art because of the brutality of the sport.

Wai Kru is a dance/ritual paying homage to the school/gym/teacher where you came from. Each school has their own wai kru and you can determine the style of your opponeng by watching their wai kru. Some muay thai experts can predict the outcome of the match by just watching the wai kru. Aside from paying homage, a wai kru also serves as a warm up or stretching a few minutes before the fight and also to feel the ring. It also serves as a psychological weapon against your opponent because you can taung your opponent while doing it. If you've watched the Wai Kru of Buakaw Por Pramuk and John Way Parr they would often make actions such as pointing an imaginary gun or an imaginary bow and arrow at their adversaries.

  17. Eh, what's an FFC match? Fearless fighting championship? Any clue on their difference, as an organizing body, from URCC?

Primary difference are the rules. FFC fights in an Octagonal ring using cyclone wires while URCC uses a regular boxing ring. FFC fights are 3 rounds of 5 mins each (to others who are reading this, please correct me if I'm wrong) and URCC are 2 rounds of 10mins each. FFC has judges to rule the match in cases that there are no submission or knockdown, while in URCC there are no judges and the ony way to win is via knockdown, submission or referee stoppage. FFC follows the UFC format while URCC follows the early Pride FC format. Both rules have their pros and cons.

  18. hey leloup tnx for your effort , yup pls let me know if they would have any seminar or anything about practicing with them

    enewiz

Isn't Orlando Lapuz the ATBAP head?

Yup. I don't know with Sir Lapuz, from time to time he will represent Muay Thai, then after a while, he'll say he's yaw-yan. But he is legit Yaw-yan. (Politics of course, but I don't want to delve in the issues concerning my elders) Pareho sila ni Kru Robert Valdez who now heads MAP.
