  1. Minotauro Nogueira and Frank Mir named Ultimate Fighter coaches for season 8

    the ultimate fighter 8 coaches

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir has been tabbed as one of two coaches who will appear on season eight of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), which will begin taping soon and is expected to debut on Spike TV sometime in September, according to Yahoo!Sports.com.

His opposing coach is none other than UFC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, setting up an eventual blockbuster title match on New Year’s Eve 2008.

This is quite a reversal of fortune for “The Baddest Man on The Planet.” Less than 18 months ago, most were quick to write off Mir as a gifted and technical fighter who could not replicate his previous exploits inside the Octagon after recovering from a near fatal motorcycle wreck.

In fact, he lost two of his first three bouts when he returned to action — and his lone win over Dan Christison during that span was less than impressive.

But things began to turn around for Mir when he submitted Antoni Hardonk with a textbook kimura at UFC 74: “Respect” in August 2007. He did what everyone was waiting for him to do and he looked good doing it.

The “old” Frank Mir was back.

That was no more evident than when in his next bout Mir weathered a brutal attack from the massive Brock Lesnar at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” to pull off a crafty fight-ending submission (kneebar). It appears that the two back-to-back wins, as well as a visible re-dedication to training, has earned Mir another shot at championship glory.

First, however, he will have to train and manage a team of mixed martial arts hopefuls in front of a national television audience. That shouldn’t be a problem because Mir is comfortable in front of a camera thanks to his role as ringside announcer at World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) events.

He also knows a thing or two about Brazilian jiu-jitsu and MMA overall. Mir has a ton of fight experience and he’s not even 30 years old.

Nogueira — who defeated Tim Sylvia to win the interim heavyweight championship at UFC 81 — is the first man ever to hold Pride FC and UFC belts. He is undefeated inside the Octagon (2-0) and will look to win over several new fans (and students) while on the show.

Despite his talent and unrivaled accomplishments, it appears that Nogueira has yet to gain widespread respect and notoriety from casual fans. That could all change … soon.

TUF 8 is expected to feature light heavyweights and lightweights, breaking from recent tradition of focusing on just one weight class. Filming is set to begin soon and the show will run from September through December.

  3. 'Invitation Only' Taiwans gets its first ever slasher horror

Invitation Only is billed as "Taiwan's First-Ever Slasher Horror" (there's not much on the official site at the moment). Maria Ozawa won the role of a supermodel character by beating out pro catwalkers and was by all accounts a professional, hard worker who won over everyone involved including those who were uncomfortable with the idea of a porn star being in the film. Indeed, her role was expanded to include more scenes, delivering dialogue in both English and Japanese.

  4. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Australian soap star turned pop singer Natalie Imbruglia has auditioned for a role in Gavin Hood's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". It was rumored that Maggie Q was the front runner for the role of Silver Fox, Wolverine's love interest. Meanwhile reports have drudged up a two-month old rumor that Bailey Chase (TV's "Buffy") would be playing Gambit and Delta Goodrem agrees to cameo as 'Rogue.

  5. Gonzaga vs Werdum in ufc 80

The Carioca Gabriel “Napao” GOnzaga finally shall have a chance to avenge his knockout loss to Fabricio Werdum in Jungle Fight 1, in September, 2003. Marco Alvan, leader of Team Link confirmed today exclusively to GRACIEMAG.com that the battle between the black belts will take place in January, at UFC 80, in Newcastle, England.

Napao is recovering from a fractured nose, suffered during his loss to Randy Couture, in August. Werdum, though, has been training hard with his new team, Chute Boxe, since his loss to the Belarusian Andrei Arlovski in April.

“They fought at different times, Napao was 10kg lighter and was not originally on the card. The fight was offered to him at the last moment and they said there was a change in adversary and it would be Werdum. The two have progressed a lot and have what it takes to put on a great fight. Napao thinks the first fight was good and that this one will be even better. He accepted the proposal the minute it was offered,” declared Alvan.

Wanderlei Silva: I'm Going To Knock Out Chuck

“I’m training hard, I only fight to win,” Silva stated. “I want to come back to the top and fighting with Chuck now is the best moment for me. In the next 2 years, I will give you the best of my career. For me this is the opportunity to come back to the top. First, I’m going to knock out Chuck and after I want the belt.”

  6. it seems that Matt Lindland wants to beat up The Spider.

    here's the interview...

“If somebody had somebody out there, like say Anderson Silva, that needed to get beat up, I’d be more than happy to step in the ropes and take him on. I think that would be a great match up stylistic wise…. His striking is, I think, the best in MMA. I don’t think anybody else uses their striking skills as good as he does. I think my wrestling is the best in MMA. And I think I’d like to match up with him and see if I can close the distance and put him on the ground and out maneuver him on the ground, or see if he can keep the distance and create that space that he needs to do damage. And he doesn’t need much space. I would love to get back in [the UFC]. If they want to deal like professional businessmen, I would love to work with them. I just want to do it professionally and put everything into a contract because this is a business, and it’s my profession, and it’s how I do business…. I would love to come fight for that organization. They’ve got a lot of good talent. They put on a good show. They’ve got a great product. They understand how to market this sport. They understand how to promote. They’ve got a lot of good things going on for them, but they’re inflexible. It’s either our way or beat it.”

  7. Gatchaman (G-Force):

Paul Dini has been signed to collaborate on the screenplay for Imagi Animation Studios' upcoming CG-animated motion picture, Gatchaman. Gatchaman is based on the successful Japanese franchise created in the early 1970s by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida. Aired in the U.S. as Battle of the Planets and G-Force, the TV series soon became one of the top syndicated shows. Scheduled for release in early 2009, Gatchaman is a big, effects-rich movie set in a future world grappling with environmental and technological issues. The story focuses on five reluctant heroes whose remarkable genetic code makes them Earth's only hope of defeating extra-terrestrial invaders.

    Gatchaman (G-Force):

Gabriel Casseus ("Black Hawk Down") has joined the cast of Disney's "G-Force" for director Hoyt Yeatman. Casseus will play an NSA agent tracking a group of genetically enhanced animal commandos. In the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced live-action/CGI family feature, G-Force follows a group of intelligent animal commandoes working for a government agency trying to prevent an evil billionaire from taking over the world.
