    There was this someone I liked, and what I thought was just things I would genuinely do for people I consider dear friends turned out to be Acts of Service: topping up our water bottles, offering one of my jackets when she was cold, even buying matching padlocks. A mutual colleague of ours even joked that this was some Wattpad-level OMG LOVEBIRDS thing.

    No. My experience surviving an abusive relationship has taught me quite a few things, and one of those was "secret love affairs are a Patently Bad Idea." Another was "anyone who restricts you and claims it's for your own good just wants to keep you under their control," but I digress.

    Or pay religiously, like I did with my BPI Rewards CC. Started with a 25K limit, and 6 or so months in with sufficiently large regular payments saw my limit double.

    At my age, I'm most likely to end up being the "15 years older" down the line, and knowing that my youngest half-sister is 17 years my junior, the very idea coming from either way makes my skin crawl.

    The cynical reasons involve Money, Sex, and/or Power. If it needs spelling out: Money - Ugly Dude's got a lot of money in the bank. Sex - Ugly Dude is just that great in bed. Power - Ugly Dude has the connections/influence/etc.
