    GAMES WEDNESDAY (Cuneta Astrodome)

    4:50 p.m. -- Coca-Cola vs Red Bull

    7:20 p.m. -- Air21 vs Welcoat

MANILA, Philippines -- In playoff mode this early, Purefoods broke away late in the first quarter and went on to rip Coca-Cola, 101-87, Sunday night and formally clinch the first automatic semifinal seat in the Smart PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

The Tender Juicy Giants tore the game wide open using just a 9-0 run to close out the first period and eventually notchedtheall-important 12th win to reach the Final Four ahead of everyone else.

“We wanted to put our spirit to the test,” said coach Ryan Gregorio, who made the semifinals with still two games left in their schedule. “We came to this game with a playoff mentality, that’s why we played hard all the way.”

James Yap scattered 29 points, while Jondan Salvador, in possibly his finest game since coming back from a career-threatening knee injury last year, scored six of his 12 points at the start of the second period.

The Giants, champions here two years ago, improved their leading card to 12-4.

They took a 24-16 lead with that 9-point burst and then opened up the second period with a 14-5 salvo that all but took the fight out of the otherwise game Tigers.

Coca-Cola lost for the second straight time and dropped to 6-10 overall, down in ninth place.

Sta. Lucia Realty earned at least a playoff for the second spot after winning a franchise-best seventh straight game later, 99-77, over struggling powerhouse Magnolia.

The Realtors got 21 points from Kelly Williams and 19 points each from rookie Ryan Reyes and veteran Marlou Aquino in climbing to 11-6 and staying in second spot.

Magnolia, meanwhile, bowed out of the automatic Final Four race by losing for the eighth time in 17 games.

Peter June Simon contributed four of his 18 points in that Purefoods run as the Giants raced to a 38-21 lead heading into the final six minutes of the first half.

It was all Purefoods from there as the Giants kept the Tigers, who came into the game winners of five of their last seven outings, at bay the rest of the way.

“The real test of character of a team is when it plays with nothing on the line,” Gregorio said. “It’s a big luxury to be in the semifinals already. This is a huge blessing for the team.”

Yap, the MVP last season, hit 11 of 20 shots from the field, while Salvador completed a double-double with 16 rebounds.

    The scores:

    First Game

    PUREFOODS 101 -- J. Yap 29, Simon 19, Salvador 12, R. Yap 12, Raymundo 9, Pingris 8, Lanete 6, Adducul 6, Sanz 0.

    Quarters: 24-16, 54-35, 80-62, 101-87

    Second Game

  2. monumental collapse by Magnolia! somewhat similar to what happened to TNT :)

didn't expect Red Bull to win... by the manage to pull through... miraculously if I may add!

which now leads to the juicier part!

apparently SMC management is desperately considering bringing back coach siot back to BGK

this has a lot to do with arben santos (manager of the blue eagle players) who wants to put an Ateneo alumnus as coach (hmmm... I wonder who? ;)) mainly because he isn't so thrilled that Larry isn't being given the chance to strut his wares on the hardcourt... once this happens look for the other players to play second fiddle to the Ateneo players...

This is already happening. Imagine, Gabby Espinas, the NCAA Rookie-MVP riding the bench. Other prominent players riding the bench - Calaguio, Tugade, Danny Seigle included. Also, the other SMB top players like Ildefonso, no longer given plays to set them up. There was even an instance when Wesley Gonzales, doing nothing, even bungling free throws, still remain on the court. LA Tenorio, instead of calling up plays, setting up his teammates, the usual point guard duties, now took many shots. He does not have the pass first mentality, typical of a SMB point guard! Before, SMB has the best ball rotation in the PBA, import or no import. SMB is well known for team plays, unselfish basketball.

It's a pity. What is now happening for the team I used to cheer for!

    SMB - Samahang Mga Bulok!!!!!!

  3. Ganyan talaga. Kung may kaibigan kang taga US magpabili ka na lang sa kanya ng Nike shoes. Isa sa mga stores na magandang magbigay ng deal ay ung Finishline.

    GAME SATURDAY (Tacloban City)

    4:30 p.m.--Red Bull vs Purefoods

My take on this Magnolia team: It seems to me that admu players are given more playing time than the others. For instance, in the game against Welcoat last night, there was a time when there are four (4) admu players at the same time on the court. Even when Wesley Gonzales, was doing nothing, even bungling his free throws, still stayed on the court. In contrast Gabby Espinas, the NCAA rookie-MVP was benched! And, no one would argue with me that Espinas is a much better player than Wesley. Lordy Tugade, one of the stars of Red Bull, also benched! Magnolia is a very talented squad, put to a waste. Unless, Magnolia changes its priorities, this team is a goner!

  5. PLDT DSL - now you have it, now you don't

The problem with PLDT is that closet queen MVP, is too engrossed, spending too much money on basketball players, to the point, that I feel, of neglecting his business. Imagine offering Ryan Buenafe, Jrs. MVP from SSC, 1.5M, to go to admu!!!!!!!!
