  1. grabe! ang hirap mag-negosyo...ang EWT now is 15% na, Expanded Withholding Tax ata...imagine mo gano kalaki ang binabayaran ng mga negosyante sa BIR...bukod sa EWT na 'to, meron pang VAT, monthly, quarterly at annual...anong pang matitira nyan...

EWT of 15-% are for professionals whose annual income exceeds P720,000. EWT is an advance form of tax payment on the part of self-employed individuals, professionals, brokers, and corporations falling under certain categories.

  2. Death and taxes are the two things certain in our life, according to B. Franklin. Our tax system is so much simpler than most others. While we have less than 300 articles, that of U.S. at one time had over 10,000.

The major tax is on income and the next big one,  on the other hand is a tax on the consumption, VAT. Then, there are percentage taxes on various articles of commerce from fuel, beer, telephones, transport among others. Then there's the stamp tax on documents.

Taxes are paid here in self-assessment basis which means you do your own comp*tation of your own  liability with the government reserving its right to audit you later. BIR is going towards advance collection of the tax due through withholding taxes. Withholding taxes may be final or creditable. For final withholding, no additional taxes need to be paid. While in case of creditable you may either add payment or even refund the taxes you have already paid.

That's not even all the taxes collected by BIR and yet it is not only the BIR that collects taxes, the Bureau of Customs, the local government units from the barangays to the big cities get to have their piece of the pie.

As in many other countries, most Filipinos resort to evasion in reducing tax liabilities but with the seemingly relentless efforts of the BIR and DOF against tax evasion and corruption, would be tax evaders should have a serious rethink.

Yes I agree! But BIR and DOF should be more serious in their efforts and not only run after the low key persons but also the high profiles who have over the years been running away from their obligations.

To add on, we also have Transfer Taxes such as Estates and Donors Taxes. These are levied on the transfers of properties from one person to another. A person in this case may either be juridical or natural.

  4. mga tax people!

i need your help.. I just want to ask kung san nakakakuha ng mga bir regulations, cta issuances and SC decisions for tax cases.. I had previous tax experience in one of the big firms before and i want to be updated sna ulit with the new issuances now that I am now in private practice..  Thanks!

BIR has a website... where the regulations etc are placed and posted by year of issuances. The site is www.bir.gov.ph

For seminars and updates you might want to call up TSRC (Tax Studies and Research Center). They conduct regular seminars and updates for a fee of course on Tax, Accounting, SEC etc matters. Just PM me if you want to get the phone number of TSRC. It's against MTC rules to post numbers here.

    Hope this help!

  6. How's everyone on this thread?

Just to point out my sentiments here. I just hope that we accountants or consultants realize the effects and rationale of these moves or motives.

Congress is acting on a bill to tax TEXT MESSAGING. Their reason is to collect revenues for the government. Their basis is the millions of subscribers of at least three networks multiplied by the number of text messages sent by the minute. True that even on a P0.01 per text sent multiplied by the number of subscribers, by the number of days in a month and wella you have instant cash for the government. But don't they realize also that there is already a double or multiple taxation now that may occur if they pursue this? The networks are already charged VAT for such text messaging at the rate of 10-% whether it's for prepaid or post paid. Those who are post paid subscribers would be able to vouch for this and find these in their statements.

Ironically, they have just made and passed a bill exempting DOCTORS & LAWYERS from VAT which is a 10-% business tax. Their reason is for the poor not to be burdened by the said levy. I have mentioned or discussed before in this same thread about my opinion regarding this. If they really want to be pro-poor then how come, groceries and restaurants where these same 'poor people' they identify are not exempt from VAT? To my mind and IMHO, the priviledge of the rich are still manifested in this move. Those that could lobby in Congress for removal of such VAT or taxes are those that have given priviledge to a few people and not for the common good. Sad, but this is the reality now.

Then comes the bill from Congress, that they are thinking of taxing text messaging. Text messaging that has become an alternative means of communication for most people from all walks of life in our country. Where the landline facilities have not reached, text messages have done fast and in real time (with exceptions).

My sentiments really. This is just MY HUMBLE OPINION. Thank you! :(
