  1. I would just like to correct the cartoons for GMA-7:

    Monday-Mekanda

    Tuesday-Daimos

    Wednesday-Mazinger Z

    Thursday-Grendaizer

    Friday-Voltes V

I should know because I watched these for two years and it was a hard habit to break when it was stopped. I am pretty sure kids like me felt the same. Star Rangers was shown on BBC-2 if I am not mistaken.

I think Star Rangers was on RPN 9?

  2. Game fixing in any sports is not an urban legend, totoo ito...

    Cases in point:

    Danny Florencio

In the early 1970s, he, along with Jun Papa, became the cornerstones of the powerhouse Crispa squad. However, in 1973, he, along with four others, were meted a lifetime ban by the MICAA due to game-fixing allegations, which was later lifted.

Crispa Superstars (Atoy Co, Philip Cesar, Bernard Fabiosa, et. al)

The players involved were Florencio, Jun Papa, Rudolf Kutch, Ernie de Leon (later became a PBA referee), Epoy Alcantara, Rudy Soriano and Billy Abarrientos (uncle of Johnny A.). This led to massive rebuilding of the Crispa team with the entry of Ed Carvajal, the Cezar brothers, Fabiosa, Guidaben, among others.

  3. I don't know if "Choo Choo Junction" in Greenhills opened in the 70s but the earliest recollection I have of this restaurant was around 1980 or 1981. I just started grade school. It is located where Mcdonalds is now. "Come to Choo Choo Junction, the great spaghetti station."

Yes, I also recall Choo Choo Junction in Greenhills. It was around 1980. I recall it being located at the site of where the Connecticut Carpark Arcade now stands.

  4. Nihon bashite near EDSA is good for Sushi, sashimi, tempura. The one near Pasong Tamo is good for Yakitoris. However, for a Japanese restaurant their housekeeping is terrible.

For a good Ramen, Tamagoya in Masinag, Antipolo/Marikina is good. The broth is not too overwhelming. Food and place is very authentic. Prices and serving sizes are very reasonable.

I tried the one near Pasong Tamo a while back and I agree with your comment about their housekeeping, kaya hindi na ako bumalik.

  5. Xmal Deutschland? Yup, I know that group. They had one famous song, "Matador". Stargazer ka pa pala. Hyatt yan diba? During my time, it was Faces, Euphoria, and Metro. Huli na ang Mars which took over the place left by Faces. Those were the days. Nothing beats these places. One song I remember that dominated the disco scene in the early 90s was Simply Red's "Stars". People would flock to the dance floor and sing to the beat when this song played. Later it was "The Sign" by Ace of Base.

    Stargazer = Silahis International Hotel

Louie Y. (later, Isis) = Hyatt Regency Hotel

  6. The Beatles were making waves during this period and it was the best of times in the music world! Yesterday! Something in the way she moves...oh Lucy in the sky!

Are you sure you're in the right decade? The Beatles broke up in 1970. ;)

  7. True...I remember in the late 70's there was a one-on-one competition between two of the most celebrated jai-alai stars in the country - Manu versus Oyazabal - two players of Spanish descent. Betting was also being conducted featuring three-digit numbers that won four-digit figures (which was big at that time). The results came out daily in the major broadsheets back then.

Question: does anyone here remember the soda brands Fress Gusto and Teem?

I remember Fress Gusto and Teem.

Here's the 1975 Fress Gusto commercial featuring a very young Gary Valenciano:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTVmDxJxC90

How about Blenda butter? Francis Arnaiz, former PBA star of Toyota Tamaraws, was the main endorser in the commercial.

"Sa Blenda ang sarap. Sa Blenda ang ligaya. Sa bawat kagat, ligaya ang sarap!"

  8. There's Furusato @ what's now Traders Hotel (used to be Holiday Inn before). Sugi was also originally along Mabini Ave. near Malate Church. Two Japanese restaurants my Japanese friend from the Japanese Embassy used to bring me once a month for 3 years.

Furusato never reopened again after the fire two years ago. Sugi is still around in Greenbelt 2 (wala na yung Greenhills branch).
