There was this old restuarant in Magallnes called Minggoy's. It served classic Spanish food. I looooved their sopa de ajo. They had a branch in Alabang, too. I think they're still around, but I haven't had the chance to check.

Mingoy's (one G) is still around. Yes, their sopa de ajo was great. During the mid-2000s, they were at The Fort Strip, BGC but closed down after a few years.

They re-opened in 2021 under the name Mingoy's Paellas as a delivery & pick-up business with a simplified menu (no sopa de ajo) . Last month, they opened their first food outlet inside the food hall (Commune Hall) of Vista Mall, Santa Rosa, Laguna.

You can also check out Amalia's Fine Spanish Cuisine in BF Paranaque. Amalia is the wife of the late Mingoy Jocson. Amalia's is now run by one of the Jocson children.

This was the virginal Makati in the mid-60s before it became a city. Based on the pic since I wasn't in existence yet, the corner on the right foreground is the Dela Costa-Ayala. GT Tower and Convergys are the present buildings on the left and right, respectively, on the right foreground. Valero would be the street on the left foreground.

San Lorenzo would be the one on the right background while BGC would be the area on the further right and center background.

Greenbelt, Legaspi Village and Salcedo Village were still as green as can be.

The background is Dasmarinas Village, not BGC.

  3. Retiring in Manila is not really ideal because of the toxic environment (traffic and air/noise pollution). Finding good help (helpers, drivers) that can also be trusted is also very difficult. In terms of healthcare, Manila's top hospitals ain't exactly the best.

  4. Just ate at zubuchon, first time and I must say that never Will I eat there again, the staff is very nice and all but the lechon is one of the worst ever lechon ive tried, its very bland and tastes like its been oven cooked and not over a fire. Generals lechon is a mile ahead of them when it comes to taste. Also ordered the dinuguan, and its the same story, very bland, for comparison even red ribbons dinuguan is better than theirs.

Yeah, Zubuchon is kinda overrated nowadays.

  5. I was told by my stock-trader friend that Chic Boy is owned by the brother of the owner of Mang Inasal. Both were patterned to cater to the needs of the everyday Filipino -- parang Jollibee but much closer to eating at home ang peg nung brothers. Kaya pumatok yung unli rice -- we do love rice meals. Di natin kaya ang walang kanin. Hahaha!

Mang Inasal then rose to fame while Chic-Boy went the other way around. Nasira sila sa negative reviews ng mga tao sa food prep nila. While it is true that their food is really good, hindi naman ganun kaayos yung handling nila sa mga niluluto nila. Dirty kitchens, exposed raw meats, etc. Remember the infamous kangkong incident? Kahit naman edible worm yung nakita dun, sino ba namang gustong makakita ng uod sa pagkain nila di ba?

But it doesn't end there. As a last ditch effort, the owner of Chic Boy invested sa Double Dragon stocks. As we all know, it was a flash in the pan and their stocks continued to decline. Kaya nagkandasira-sira daw yung business mindset nung may-ari. From one failure to another, nahirapan na ulit bumangon.

Again, this is hearsay as it only came from my friend. Wala akong personal knowledge dito. Hehe! But he is reliable naman. He really knows the ins and outs of the industry.

Chic-Boy was founded by the Pier One group back in 2010. Francis Juan owns the Pier One group.

Just like Chic-Boy, I don't see any Pier One restaurants around anymore.

Is this true? Haven't tasted the "Original" yet.

Original Savory is the one from Escolta. The best! Sadly, kakaunti lang ang branches nila.
