islekimp
...a open source solution which has worked for several of my clients, who actualy had files stolen but could not be opened so it did it job unfortunate, the worst case secenrio is you have what ever files get stolen and if people have a want to get to it they will try, the solution is that those who get to the file not be able to open and read it well one you can do this all manually or attempt to a script to do it for you the open source software is call truecrypt, it encypts files, folders etc, password protect then after that if you like you can rar it and password protect that there are a few other ways, but from a simple stand point of view that maybe your best luck, let us know if you find anything else Quote Link to comment

jigger69
My advise to secure your files from data loss or data theft is to make a backup copy. If you're using windows 8 or below you can make your profile private rather than public so that your acct can only be the one that can access your file. You can also try diff paid or open source apps that cater encryption. The higher the encryption the better. Quote Link to comment
CoffeMate
For me, I would simply use winrar and password protect it, then rename the extension from .rar to .jpg then add a couple of dummy jpeg (or other files) then winrar them together again w/ different password. That would be more than sufficient to secure it. I also use cloud services (dropbox) to backup my file. 1 Quote Link to comment
Google
look at it in two angles: first is you have to protect it against unauthorized use. the second is you have to protect it if your storage fails.what you can do is to have it rarred with password and store it in a free cloud environment. talking about microsoft skydrive, google drive or dropbox. but if you want better protection before putting it in a cloud storage environment, you would have to encrypt it. truecrypt is one of the best and free opensource encrypting software. jninja
Agree.. store in cloud environment.. Yep, try out google drive, dropbox and etc.. There is a lot of free space out there. And plus you'll need not to have a lot of the hassle when transferring your files. Quote Link to comment
kantotinnyo
Also, use third-party application to delete important file(s). Simple delete operation is not that effective, lot of application out there that can recover deleted file(s) Quote Link to comment

jasperchua
If you're willing and capable, buy an annual subscription to a cloud storage service. This way you can upload important files when you don't have a local storage device but have an internet connection. As for security, I agree with the recommendations here to archive the documents and protect them with a password.
