bods1000
I've just come across several quaint white wine grapes in my readings. We're all familiar of course with sauvignon blancs, semillons, chards, even verdelho and gruner veltliner, which has been mentioned here a long time ago. But there are others, more localized and not too well-known. Malvasia fine and rabigato - from the Douro valley in Portugal and used for white port. Bacchus - grown in the south of England but which originally came from Germany. Smells of nettles, hawthorne, and cow parsley, whatever they are lol! Tastes of crab apples and quince, again whatever they are. It is reportedly bony and nervy with acidity. Aligote - Burgundy. Clean, sharp, invisible-tasting. Vermentino - from Liguria in Italy. Also known as rolle in the south of France. Described as lively, herbaceous, and slightly bitter. Perfect with spaghetti and pesto. Assyrtiko - from Santorini. Heavily minerallic, clean and sharp as an axe-blade. Here's hoping that we get to have a bottle of each - where, when, how. lol! cheers! Quote Link to comment
itikbitik
Aside from the usual Chardonnay, I'm partial to Grenache Blanc's and Gewürztraminer. I think I can source Assyrtiko since my officemate is going home to Greece next month. We'll see how it goes. Quote Link to comment

bods1000
Argentine Malbec Like ThisQuote same here. right now I'm gravitating towards South Americans - malbecs and carmeneres from Chile. I think I've had it with Australian reds. Could they be heavily-laced with sulphites? Whenever I drink an Aussie, a terrible headache and dark moods envelop me. Heavily-processed? I really don't know. So I'm now dallying with Bordeaux and those heavies from south of the border. But the best red I've had of late is Six Hats, from South Africa, bought from M&S. Just enough buzz, no headache, no lunar swings. Just perfect. Quote Link to comment
agxo3
Bods, Masi - I was in Manila last November and brought a couple of bottles. Spent time with Storm but didn’t get a chance to open the wine, so get hold of him and go drink! 1 Quote Link to comment
