if you're HDD is Seagate, try using their Discwizard utility...this utility can be downloaded from their website,

www.seagate.com...if not, go to the manufacturer's website (whatever brand it is you're planning to buy)

and download the disk config utility...

 

you're proposed solution is quite a logical one, i suggest you use Windows 2000 Professional (if you're not into gaming)... what OS Platform (Win9x/Win2kPro/WinXPHome/WinXPPro) are you planning to install?

I'm using a triple boot configuration now (Win98, WinXP, & RHLinux9) so I'd probably do the same when I get the 160GB HDD. What's troubling me is yun nga, yung large disk limitation. Kelangan ko pa rin kasi yung Win98 coz some of my old hardware and applications only work in Win98. I know that in WinXP, it will be solved by installing the SP. Kaya lang pirated ang copy ko. Tapos sa 98 nmn i'm quite worried na baka nga hindi ko mautilize yung full capacity. If anyone can verify and have tried na possible yung solution ko to partition it, I guesss I'd be okay. Thanks.

Theoretically, that is a possible solution...I am more worried about your motherboard's BIOS...is your motherboard capable of recognizing the ENTIRE 160 GB...I had this issue once where I can only access the first 9 GB or so of my harddisk since it can't recognize the access method of my new HD...anyway, I may just be getting too paranoid... Also, if you're thinking of upgrading to Windows XP SP2, don't be afraid...just search for my keygen somewhere in this forum...it generates completely unique keys for Windows and can't get blacklisted...theoretically... (Hmm...seems like "theoretically" is my favorite word for today... )... :headsetsmiley:

It's oftentimes called a BSOD or Blue Screen of Death since, typically, you can't do anything else but restart the damned pc...  My question/s is/are has this only happened recently? If so, it MAY be a virus... it may also be a configuration change that you did to your machine recently. Also, has your machine been running without a reformat for a long time? It may be that there's also too much junk dll's in your machine due to constant installations and un-installations. A good format may be in order... :headsetsmiley:

Yup! A certified browser hijack if ever I saw one...wait...in this case, if ever I heard of one...whatever Anyways, what anti-adware product are you using? If you're using Lavasoft's AdAware, I doubt if it can remove such... I recommend using Giant AntiSpyware...download it using the link I posted somewhere here...

Nah! Don't mind my previous inquiry...from what I've read, your motherboard is not as archaic as I thought before...it SHOULD support that HD... Can anyone confirm this? Just really cautious about these things... :cool:

Why can't you install WinXP? It crashes even while installing? That means your problem's being caused by hardware errors! Maybe the memory needs checking...try downloading memory checkers from the net...run them and after an overnight run, you should know if your memory's faulty... :headsetsmiley:

well, first i thought it was the copy... (i bought a new one...) then i used that same copy to install XP to a friend's computer, it worked. so the copy works fine.

 

then i thought maybe i have a CD drive na namimili... well, i took out my drive, put it in a friend's PC, and installed XP... worked great mine is a Samsung CDwriter pala.

 

so its no the drive. so maye its my hard drive. its a maxtor 20gigs. ive got a 2 old hard drives lying about (a 4gig seagate and a 2 gig quantum) so i put them in and tried to install xp. surprise.. still wont work.. so defective lahat ng hard disks ko? i took my maxtor to another friend's Hard disk and install XP. installed OK (ambait ng friends ko noh?) so i took that harddisk back home and plugged it into my syste. in theory, the XP should boot up and then redetect my motherboard, video cards... etc. etc...di ba? well, it displayed that screen you get when the computer isnt shut down properly and does a scandisk. but instead of a scandisk, i get an error message and then a string of hex numbers. needless to say, xp wont boot.

 

so, its either my video card, my Ram or my mainboard.

 

when i install it, both upgrade and clean install types, it goes only up to the part where the screen is black with the windows logo in the middle and a moving status bar below it. then the status bar stops moving and goes to a black screen. i wait for about an hour then i give up.

From what you posted, that is what it boils down to...either your motherboard or video card is to blame...most probably it's the video card...I had this problem once when my pc would only display a black screen...I found that dust accumulated on the video card's heat sink and fan which caused heat issues with the video card. After I cleaned it, it worked just fine. Keep us up to date with what you find! :headsetsmiley:

Although we don’t give support for Win9X systems anymore, I can give you some helpful troubleshooting tips on what might be the problem installing Windows XP on your system.

 

By the way, you might want to post your system specs so I can provide you with more accurate details.

Ok then… first, I would remind you that your system must meet the System Requirements for Microsoft Windows XP.

 

Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP:

 

-PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended (1.8 GHz recommended)

-128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features) 256MB recommended

-1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space

-Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor

-CD-ROM or DVD drive

-Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

 

Second, only use CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive when installing Windows XP from the CD. There are lots of reported XP installation problems on CD-R/DVD-R drives.

 

Third, since you will be upgrading from WIN9X, Your Hard disk is still on FAT/FAT32 format. Windows XP is using a much secure and reliable file format system known as New Technology File System (NTFS). So I advise you to wipe out your whole hard disk clean and convert it to a “RAW” hard disk and let Windows XP reformat it to NTFS during the initial installation of the operating system.

 

You can this free tool to wipe your hard drive and give it a fresh start.

By the way, the video card has nothing to do with your problem right now, if the video card is the problem you won’t be getting any picture on your monitor in the first place. However, regarding with a long beep that you’ve heard on your pc, that might be a sign of problem with the system. Depending on the MOBO manufacturer, each Long/Short beep and/or how many times it beeps represents an error code on the system. So it is necessary for me to know your MOBO manufacturer.

 

I’m not saying that there is a problem on your MOBO as of now coz I’m not there physically in front of your system to test it. Just follow the instructions above then if everything still fails then we will move on to hardware troubleshooting.

 

And one more thing, kindly provide a lil bit more specific details on what kind of problems you are encountering during the installation of Windows XP. (Like an error code/message or a screenshot will make things much easier for both of us)

I would beg to disagree that the video card be scrapped from the list of possible problems. It is true that most video card problems would render it unable to create pictures on the monitor but in my case, the card only heated up significantly when attempting to draw the windows gui. It displayed the BIOS check, the XP progress bar and while it was attempting to draw the gui on the screen right after the progress bar (either the login screen or desktop if only one person has an account) it just stops there...oh well, whatever the problem is, I hope we find out what happens... :cool:

Yes, I’m not permanently removing the video card from the list of suspected hardware that is causing the problem. Also there are lots of problems that we might also consider like the number one reason of BSODs, Driver problems.

 

And I’m just referring to the part where he said “Based on my own analysis, the video card/MOBO might be causing the XP installation problems” and not the earlier BSOD problem tho…

 

So right now since we are just on “Software Troubleshooting” well, let’s just temporarily remove the vid card from the list to further avoid creating confusion to the end user and go for a step by step approach on this matter shall we?

 

And besides only new and mid/high-end video cards suffer over-heating problems and that is one valid reason for me to temporarily remove the vid-card from the list coz the card on his system right now is a nVidia 32MB GeForce2 card unless he have upgraded it to a high end vid card which will give us another troubleshooting question which is the compatibility of the hardware and/or driver of the video card with his current operating system Windows98 which is known to have major compatibility problems with hardwares.

why dont you try plugging the hard drive to the secondary IDE instead... nangyari na sa akin yan, error palagi yung HD ko, BSOD/freeze, pero nung inilipat ko as secondary master, ok naman na, basta kapag inilipat mo yung HD sa ibang slot, ayusin mo din yung BIOS setup mo... i turns out na may sira yung IDE cable (after a couple of experiments in interchanging the slots).... hope this works, last resort mo na siguro yung motherboard.....

nope. your sibling (brother/sister) is related to you by blood within the second degree. your nearest, most common ascendant are your parents. so you count up one degree to the parents, then down one degree to your sibling. the key thing in counting degrees in blood relationships is to look for the nearest, most common ascendant.

Your MoBo definitely should support 160GB HDD or up. If not I'm pretty sure it just needs a BIOS flash update from MSI.

Windows protection error, please restart your computer, then beep then hang same thing happened to my recently bought unit, semprom 2500, kt600-A mobo, fx 5200 vid card, maxtor 40 gig hd, after installing the os windows 98 2nd edition, then the mobo drivers, then the vidc card drivers, then installing some games thru ordinary cd rom ok naman lahat, but when i copied some games thru another HD then inserting it to the virtual drive 7.0, then installing the game like counter-strike after asking for the cd key blue error restart then ayun na windows protection error na, same with ragnarok.

 

1. I reformat the pc again then installed only the games via cd rom, here games worked ok, but avoided the hd to hd copying of games.

 

2. Second situation did the same as above but copied the games hd to hd, but did not install the games after 4 days, then on the fifth day attempted to install again the games thru virtual cd ayun gumana na.

 

Any advise.
