What's The Greatest Rock Band For You?

That's the moniker music critics tend to use to describe Radiohead...

Sorry to break the party but we have to go back to the end of the 1970's going into the 1980s. Punk was winding down from its crescendo. The pasty white faces and spiked hairdo's were wearing thin, and so were the stupid names and safety pins. There were simply too many folks trying to cash in and be the next one hit wonder.

HOWEVER, sitting on the shelf at the local record store (OK, this was in America), was an album. And affixed was a sticker saying, "THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS"

Unfortuantely, the phrase that came to be associated with one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time didn't flow from the pen of Greil Marcus, Lester Bangs, or some other music critic. It was nothing more than record company hype. The funny thing is, it stuck. It fit. At the time, it was true. I strongly feel it remains true to this day.

The album was LONDON CALLING. arguably one of the finest rock albums ever made.

With due respect to Thom Yorke, the rest of the band, and its minions of fans, I think the first Radiohead album came came out years after 1980.

The Beatles.

I have other favorite foreign rock bands too like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Uriah Heep, Foghat, Grand Funk Railroad, Rush, Metallica, Guns and Roses, The Who, Whitesnake, Cream, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Queen, Aerosmith, among other favorite bands, but the Beatles tops them all.

Sa mga local groups, Juan De La Cruz Band remains my favorite.
