Report: Randy Couture vs Brandon Vera UFC 105 main event under consideration

Former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion, Randy Couture (16-10), could return to the 205-pound division to take on Brandon Vera (11-3) in the main event at UFC 105 from the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, on Nov. 14, according to The Sun.

The report indicates that UFC sources have confirmed the showdown, which was cobbled together when the lightweight championship match between division kingpin BJ Penn and number one contender Diego Sanchez was booked for UFC 107 on Dec. 12 to compensate for the postponed fight between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Rashad Evans.

In fact, the report indicates that Evans turned down the opportunity to challenge “The Natural,” forcing the promotion to seek “The Truth.”

More on this breaking news shortly.

UFC 105 will feature hometown hero, Michael “The Count” Bisping, in the co-main event opposite Denis Kang, as well as a welterweight battle between Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun “Stun Gun” Kim. It will air on Spike TV at 9 p.m. ET on fight night.

So far, I have MMA Mania (suffocater's source), Bloody Elbow, and Cage Potato posting that story on their websites. None yet on the other major news sites like MMA Fanhouse, SI.com, Yahoo! Sports, Sherdog, MMA Weekly, and MMA Junkie. I'll give this more time, and based on Bloody Elbow's report that both Couture & Vera's camps have confirmed the offer, I'll give more time for this. The reason for that is, The Sun hasn't been that reliable when it comes to breaking news, and being a UK tabloid they're accustomed to fabricate stories to grab readers' attention. Let's give this more time, or better yet, I'll ask Brandon on his Facebook account if the rumors are true.

Hehe, click HERE and watch the vid.. It's Wanderlei in his early PRIDE days, and the picture I posted is that of his dad.. =)

Oh, and OH MY GOD!!! Couture vs. Vera?! Holy flying monkey crap. LABAN PINOY!!

One more thing, here's Team Golden Glory boss Bas Boon on their stable of fighters possibly breaking away from Strikeforce after the M-1 deal:

"It hasn't escaped my notice that we are dealing with a bunch of crooks who wish to brand their name onto someone who has managed to build up a successful organization on his own with a good network deal."

"Our deal with Strikeforce was made before this bunch of robbers came along, but now we were planning on asking our money in advance. In fact, I see this as the ideal opportunity to say no to the contract that was signed earlier; we don't want to fight on any M-mini Cons & co promotions."

"Is this the same organization that let Tommy Depret fly to America for nothing without having the decency to phone him to let him know it was cancelled?"

"I wonder what happens if Fedor loses a couple of times, or can't fight due to circumstances, to all those enforced `Co-Promotions` that do not benefit the fighters in any way."

Them's fighting words, Mr. Bas not known as Rutten. But how about your top boy Alistair Overeem not defending his Strikeforce Heavyweight Title for almost 2 YEARS while still taking fights for K-1 on that same timeframe? Hmmm.... <_<

sep 22 if i remember correctly

I got it... sept 23...to be exact... thanks anyway.

You want your day wrecked early? Read what Manny Pacquiao's boss Bob Arum has to say about MMA in general:

First off, are any of you guys white? Are you guys skinheads? I'm not white, I'm with all of you guys who represent our version of Brown Pride. My hair's already grown to its normal status. And I LOVE mixed martial arts. Not just the UFC, the SPORT of mixed martial arts. He's being racist, and apparently he's very comfortable with it.

Second, I don't have an interest in boxing because of the s@%t Arum and his fellow douchebags pull on their events. Just ask Paulie Malignaggi. Click on the links and see how

and
(<- links right here), and here's Paulie talking about boxing's incurable death:

And, I don't have an interest in boxing, and Dana White says it best as to why I don't watch anymore:

Third, calling MMA fans homosexual is already a slur, and you're supposed to be a top executive of a global brand? Way to go, Bobby Boy. You just buried boxing one feet deeper into its grave.

Fourth, calling the UFC "garbage" is irresponsible. Revenue-wise, they're up there. Frank Fertitta III (47 years old, Station Casinos CEO, Zuffa LLC co-owner), his brother Lorenzo (40 years old, Zuffa LLC co-owner, UFC Chairman & CEO), and Dana White (40 years old, Zuffa LLC co-owner and UFC President) raked in an estimated $250 million in 2008, and they only invested $2 million to complete the buyout from Robert Meyrowitz's Semaphore Entertainment Group. Imagine, from almost disappearing amidst increasing pressure to ban the sport, to raking in record numbers in PPV sales that's up there with World Wrestling Entertainment and the numerous boxing entities there is, for a measly $2 million? That's not garbage, Bobby Boy. That's sheer genius.

The numbers don't lie. Here's from Forbes.com and their article "Ultimate Cash Machine":

Price the Fertittas paid for UFC in 2001: $2 million

Value today: $1 billion-plus

UFC estimated 2008 sales: $250 million

UFC is estimated to control 90% of the mixed martial arts industry.

UFC pay-per-view buys in 2001: 145,000

UFC pay-per-view buys in 2007: 5.1 million

Lastly, what does he mean that the African-Americans, Mexicans, and Filipinos don't buy UFC PPV's? How does he know that? Doesn't he know that some of the elite fighters in the UFC roster, as well as Strikeforce and the other MMA promotions in the US, are either African-American or Hispanic? And we do have Pinoys fighting in MMA, like Brandon and Kerry Vera (UFC and Strikeforce, respectively), Philippe Nover, and Mark Munoz? The moment I read that, I had the answer right away as to why that is so. WE FILIPINOS GET THE UFC PAY-PER-VIEWS FOR FREE, YOU MORON. EVEN YOUR OWN PAY-PER-VIEWS, WE GET IT FOR FREE.

Bob Arum is an embarrassment to his company, the "sport" he represents, and to himself as an individual.

On to why UFC has the numbers...Coz they know which assets performs better than the other assets and they also knew which liabilities to avoid. Also it due to Dana who knows how to listen to the fans... Bob arum is too greedy as his age is...but what he doesn't know is boxing is also part of MMA as a technique, like grappling.

Just this noon I saw a good HBO boxing fight in the ortiz fight...(not tito ortiz)...both boxers are good...its just that people needs to appreciate boxing.

MMA is on the rise because its raw, unpredictable, exciting. while boxing has been around and people want a new taste...

dang!!!!! this will be a very big fight for the truth. he has the speed, strikin and wrestling background to match up with captain america. this will an interesting fight. go pinoy!!!!

Plus good take-down defense. I haven't seen The Iceman's 2 wins over Randy but I presume The Natural lost coz he couldn't take Chuck down and Chuck was too good a striker for Couture. If Brandon's take-down defense is as good as advertised, then I'd pick Brandon objectively but subjectively, Im still for The Truth. Syempre Pinoy.

it will definitely be a huge test for brandon to face someone like captain america. the truth has the advantage standing up for sure, but i am however more interested if he can keep the fight standing against a world class wrestler like couture. you would think couture has the advantage in the wrestling game simply because he is the naturally bigger fighter. if vera can stop the takedowns, i expect a unanimous victory or stoppage via TKO

The only problem I see with Brandon since the Werdum & Jardine losses is that in the Soz & Reese Andy fight he looked kinda tentative uncorking his strikes, and most of the analysts that have discusses Brandon's fights have made the same comments, that he's started to become cautious when striking. At first glance - especially in the Mike Patt & Soz fights - Brandon looked amazing with his strikes, but then again he had highlight reel TKO's over the late Justin Eilers, Fabiano Scherner, and former UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir, and because of the supposed hype that the UFC has given to Brandon everybody's expecting the same results now that he's acclimated himself to the 205 weight class.

I personally don't agree with the hype now, but back then when the UFC's heavyweight division was thinner than Kate Moss he was on the fast track to a title shot. Actually, the main event of UFC 68 was supposed to be Brandon against Tim "TIMMAH!!!" Sylvia for the Heavyweight strap, but because of trouble caused by Brandon's former manager Mark Dion he got scratched from the shot. Ironic, since the guy who took Brandon's place is the same guy whom he'll be fighting at 105: Randy Couture. And Couture raped Sylvia for 5 rounds, coming off retirement, to enter his 2nd reign as UFC Heavyweight Champion.

For me, the key for Brandon here is, since they've trained together and he's also versed in greco-roman wrestling, that he should capitalize on his footwork and hand/leg speed in warding off Randy's clinch and shoot attempts. Get that sprawl working, evade or at least learn how to defend against dirty boxing, which is Randy's specialty. He was a Division 1 wrestler with Old Dominion before enilsting in the Air Force, and even then he entered the wrestling team there, and he also has some exposure with the Grapplers Quest tournaments, so his wrestling is well enough to serve him well. Against a much better wrestler in Randy Couture, I'm not so sure how Brandon will fare, but I'm pretty sure he'll be aware of Randy's abilities. Like I mentioned, and Randy did mention this in one of his interviews, they've trained together and was actually impressed with his skills.

He made a name for himself by wrecking Mir, but the Frank Mir he TKO'd is a universe away from the Frank Mir that we have now. By winning - decisiveness is the consensus - against Randy, on a card that is televised across the United States (105 will be free on Spike, not on PPV), he will most definitely make a bigger name for himself, and show the world that Manny Pacquiao ain't the only Pinoy kicking ass all around the world. If - and hopefully, when - that happens, this might solve the debacle on who should Anderson Silva fight next at 205.

pinoy ako pero my money will be on couture. either matakedown sya all 3 rounds ni couture or puro clinch sila. mahina clinch ni vera compared to couture.

Very good examples at the top of my head

Maia vs Marquardt: everyone predicted na Maia would easily submit Nate.. what happened... Maia got KTFOd in just a few seconds

Henderson vs Bisping: Bisping had the better striking skills but he got KOd by Hendo

Lindland Vs Lutter: Lindland submitted a BJJ black belt

You got me thinking there, Olympus. Some of the fights off the top of my head:

Nick Diaz vs. Takanori Gomi, PRIDE.33

- Everybody expected Gomi to steamroll Diaz, but Diaz battered Gomi enough to catch him in a rare gogoplata. Blew my mind away when I saw that fight.

Randy Couture vs. Tim "TIMMAH!!!" Sylvia, UFC 68

- Coming off a year in retirement, most (if not all) were realistically writing Randy off. But, after Randy threw - and connected - with the first punch that removed Tim from his senses the entire fight, we got the upset and the fairytale ending we all wanted.

Seth Petruzelli vs. Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson, EliteXC Heat

- Everybody wasn't expecting anything at all from Seth, since he was a literal last-minute replacement for Ken Shamrock. But, after the jab that shocked the world, Seth earned the nickname "Kimbo Slayer" - and sent EliteXC to its deathbed after the whole Strikegate fiasco.

Roger Huerta vs. Clay Guida, TUF 6 Finale

- After Clay rocked Roger with a wicked right hook at the tail end of round 2, everybody thought the SI cover boy is done. But, as Smokin' Joe Rogan said, Roger had that look that says "I'm gonna k*ll you, even if it kills me", and in the end, he caught Clay in a RNC. That was my Fight Of The Year.

Anderson Silva vs. Ryo Chonan, PRIDE Shockwave! 2003

- Anderson was demolishing Chonan throughout the fight, and Chonan had no answer at all. Then, from out of nowhere, Chonan caught Anderson with a flying leg scissors takedown and shifted right away into a heel hook. Until now, that is the most amazing submission win that I've seen ever (even better than Jason Day's Twister win @ RITC 35).

Nino "Elvis" Schembri vs. Kazushi Sakuraba, PRIDE.25

- Saku was riding a wave of popularity back then, even after losses to Wanderlei Silva & Mirko Cro Cop prior to the Elvis fight. Everybody was expecting another Brazilian to fall to Saku, but after one knee right to the nose, Elvis shocked Japan and scored the TKO.

Shinya Aoki vs. Hayato "MACH" Sakurai, DREAM.8

- Everybody was writing off Sakurai, and some even went as far as saying that MACH was washed up and had no place in the Welterweight GP DREAM was holding. But, Aoki's Magic Submission Pants were no effect to MACH's knees.
