Serial Killer
Matt Hughes vs. Thiago Alves UFC 85 fight for main event and Michael Bisping vs. Chris Leben UFC 85 fight confirmed UFC 85 has a surprise main event … and it’s a good one. Former welterweight champion Matt Hughes (42-6) and Thiago Alves (14-3) will step up to the plate, inking a fight contract to go toe-to-toe during the main event at UFC 85 at the O2 Arena in London, England, on June 7, according to Matt-Hughes.com. The exciting showdown between two of the top performers in the 170-pound division was booked to help fill the void of the injured Chuck Liddell, who had to withdraw from his fight with Rashad Evans because of a torn hamstring. Here’s a snip: “June 7th, in England, I fight Thiago Alves. The fight is confirmed, it will be the main event for the card. Dana just called me with the news. Chuck got hurt and couldn’t fight, so he needed a replacement and called me and I said yes. More news as I get it. No matter what happens in this fight, I’ve got Serra next.” Wow … once again Hughes comes up big to save a major pay-per-view (PPV) event — he agreed to fight Georges St. Pierre when Matt Serra pulled out just six weeks prior to their proposed clash at UFC 79: “Nemesis” in December 2007. Hughes lost that bout via second round submission, derailing his immediate chances at one last title run prior to his looming retirement (Hughes has admitted that he has about three fights left in the tank.) It was widely known that he would finally settle the score with Serra after “The Terror” lost his welterweight bout to St. Pierre this past weekend. Things have changed for now … that showdown is apparently still guaranteed regardless of what happens in the United Kingdom. Alves is coming off the biggest win of his career — a technical knockout of top division contender Karo Parisyan at UFC Fight Night 13. “The Pitbull” is on a five fight win streak since a loss to Jon Fitch back in 2006. Naturally, with a win over Parisyan, as well as Hughes, Alves would clearly distinguish himself as the next title challenger after St. Pierre and Fitch face off later on this year. The rumored bout between Michael Bisping and Chris Leben is still possible; however, “The Count” has apparently not signed the bout agreement. And now that he won’t be the main event perhaps he’s lost his desire to do so altogether. The 185-pound showdown between Michael Bisping (15-1) and Chris Leben (18-4) at UFC 85 that MMAmania.com first passed along days ago is now official and will take place at the O2 Arena in London, England, on June 7. “The Count” is coming off an impressive middleweight debut at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ this past weekend, taking out Charles McCarthy in impressive fashion. It won’t be as easy, however, to pound out the super tough and extremely game “Crippler.” Leben is on a two-fight win streak, including a technical knockout of Alessio Sakara at UFC 82: “Pride of a Champion” last month, as well as a sensational come from behind knockout of Terry Martin at UFC Fight Night 11. This has fireworks written all over it — both men prefer to keep on the feet and throw leather. If it does go to the ground, however, Leben possesses a distinct advantage with his underrated ground skills. In addition to the bout between Leben and Bisping, UFC.com also made official the main event between welterweights Matt Hughes and Thiago Alves, as well as the light heavyweight tilt between Rashad Evans and James Irvin. Talk about making up for the loss of Chuck Liddell — the man who had to withdraw from the UFC 85 pay-per-view (PPV) event just this week with a torn hamstring. He’s essentially the reason for the sudden increase in star power. Remember, too, that there is another fantastic 170-pound scrap on the card between Mike Swick and Marcus Davis, as well as a 185-pound match up between Nate Marquardt and Thales Leites. Oh yeah, two top heavyweights — Brandon Vera and Fabricio Werdum — are also scheduled to tangle. Main Event: Matt Hughes (42-6) vs. Thiago Alves (14-3) Under card: 185 lbs.: Michael Bisping (15-1) vs. Chris Leben (18-4)205 lbs.: James Irvin (14-4) vs. Rashad Evans (11-0-1)265 lbs.: Brandon Vera (8-1) vs. Fabricio Werdum (10-3-1)170 lbs.: Mike Swick (11-2) vs. Marcus Davis (14-3)185 lbs.: Martin Kampmann (15-2) vs. Jorge Rivera (15-6)185 lbs.: Nate Marquardt (26-7) vs. Thales Leites (12-1)205 lbs.: Jason Lambert (23-7) vs Luis Arthur Cane (7-1)170 lbs.: Roan Carneiro (12-6) vs. Ryo Chonan (14-8)155 lbs.: Thiago Tavares (13-1) vs. Matt Wiman (9-3)170 lbs.: Jess Liaudin (12-9) vs. Paul Taylor (8-3-1)265 lbs.: Neil Wain vs. Antoni Hardonk Quote Link to comment

SevenZeroFive
Guys what do you think about this...came across sherdog.com's forums...hopefully there will be a match between Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson...it might happen later this year..hopefully it does!! ^ he's got nothing else to do, in all honesty. a 3rd beating from Anderson would tarnish his reputation to maybe like (sadly) Ken Shamrock status. he can move up to 205 (as he did when he fought Shamrock), but 185 is his natural fighting weight. riceb0i
when he does that, he'd be a small LHW copared to guys like Soku, Forrest, Jardine, etc not really a good move for him in my opinion, but yeah another loss to Silva would k*ll his popularity. he's faced Silva 2x & he lost both matches convincingly. i guess he'd be a gatekeeper in the MW div of the UFC, like a testing ground for fighters if they're worthy to fight the spider.
