I don't follow it anymore. The last great generation that I followed was that of Jaromir Jagr, Mario Lemiueux, Fedorov, and all those great teams at that time - the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Detroit Red Wings. Of course, nandun ako before that, the time of Gretzky, Bobby Orr and all those great Boston Bruins teams.

 

Good luck on this thread, and I hope madaming mag-post, para update naman ako. Cheers!

Thanks....the likes of Mario Lemiueux, Fedorov and Jagr may have long been over....but a new breed of ice heroes emerge.

 

The likes of Alex Ovechkin (Washington), Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh), Jonathan Quick (Los Angeles), Jonathan Toews (Chicago) and others lead the way for the league to reach greater heights.

Stars win fourth straight, top Predators in OT Janmark scores in OT, also has assist

NASHVILLE -- Mattias Janmark's goal 3:49 into overtime gave the Dallas Stars a 3-2 win against the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena on Monday.

Forward Tyler Seguin took the original shot that was stopped by Predators goaltender Carter Hutton. Seguin was able to get the puck over to Janmark, who put it into an empty net for his 12th goal.

Dallas (37-15-5) won their fourth straight game.

Florida Panthers hold off Penguins 2-1 in shootout

The Panthers were clinging to a thin thread Monday night, hoping the one-goal advantage picked up in the first period would be enough to beat a dangerous Pittsburgh team.

As anyone could have predicted, it was not.

No, the Penguins tied things up with 3:19 remaining before the Panthers prevailed 2-1 in a five-round shootout at BB&T Center.

The victory was especially sweet for the Panthers, a team outscored 10-3 in two weekend losses coach Gerard Gallant described as “pathetic.”

With a retooled lineup because of a variety of injuries, Gallant was singing a different tune Monday.

“It was a good game against a real good team,’’ said Gallant, whose team had lost its previous two games to Pittsburgh in overtime. “Every time we play them it’s a battle. We finally got on the winning side. We finally got the two points — and we needed them.”

The Panthers opened the scoring in the first period when Nick Bjugstad redirected a long pass from Alex Petrovic and beat Marc-Andre Fleury.

Florida had few prime-scoring chances as it appeared to play a prevent-style through much of the second and third with its Band-Aid lineup, yet had a few opportunities and failed to cash in.

The Penguins, who came back to beat the Panthers over a week ago despite trailing 2-0 late in the third, tied things up Monday when Chris Kunitz’s shot just got past the out stretched glove of backup goalie Al Montoya.

Montoya was strong in net once more for the Panthers, perhaps earning another start Thursday when San Jose comes to town.

Filling in for Roberto Luongo, Montoya stopped 31 shots — including four in overtime before stopping the final four shots in the shootout.

N.Y.I. 4, Detroit 1: Red Wings cool off, drop matinee

NEW YORK -- A sloppy performance left the Detroit Red Wings without points for the first time in six games.

They lost, 4-1, to the New York Islanders in a matinee today at the Barclays Center. After a solid defensive stretch, the Wings have allowed nine goals the last two games.

 

The Wings have beaten the Islanders twice the past three weeks but this time allowed three goals in the second period. Pavel Datsyuk scored in the third period as the Wings avoided what would have been their first shutout of the season.

 

The game began about 18 hours after the Wings had wrapped up a victory over the Boston Bruins at home. There wasn't much pace on either side at the start, and the Wings had just two shots on net when they went on a power play eight minutes into the game. Dylan Larkin used a wrist shot to force a save from Thomas Greiss but, otherwise, the Wings didn't make anything happen.

 

Gustav Nyquist fired a shot that got by Greiss, only to clank off the left goal post as the Wings got their legs going. Brendan Smith blocked a shot during an Islanders power play to help limit New York to eight shots on net in the first period.

 

Jimmy Howard got the start and made a save on John Tavares early in the second period, as the Islanders surged in shots. Darren Helm went to the penalty box at 5:53, and the Wings faced a second penalty k*ll. Tavares had two quick chances, both turned away by Howard.

 

Some handy stickwork by Brock Nelson put the Wings in a hole midway through the game. Nelson batted Ryan Strome's pass out of the air, got a stick on the puck and fired a shot that went in off Howard's glove. That the Wings were the ones who had played the day before became more and more evident in the second period, which saw them get outshot and take a third penalty when Datsyuk was called for delay of game.

 

The Islanders used the power play to double their lead, with Josh Bailey snapping in Johnny Boychuk's rebound at 14:57. The Wings got a second power play the last minute of the period. Marek Zidlicky, a trade-day acquisition by the Wings a year ago, made it 3-0 a little more than a minute later, when he crashed in from the blue line and beat Howard with a backhand. Howard had no help from teammates on the last two goals, with Xavier Oeullet, especially, having a couple of rough shifts.

 

The Wings began the third period with a minute left on a power play but made no use of it. They got another power play when Nelson was called for closing his hand on the puck at 6:19, but Abdelkader was called for using his stick to push Howard's stick back to him at 6:52.

 

A turnover by the Islanders led to Datsyuk sniping the puck at 9:31, but that wasn't enough to stir the Wings to better play. Horrible defensive coverage left Strome free to convert on a no-look pass by Tavares at 12:14.

Blackhawks stop slide with 7-2 victory over Maple Leafs

CHICAGO (AP) -- The sellout crowd chanted ''M-V-P! M-V-P!'' and Patrick Kane cracked a wry grin.

 

It was a sweet ending to a difficult homestand for the Chicago Blackhawks.

 

Kane had a goal and three assists, and the Blackhawks stopped a three-game slide with a dominant 7-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night.

 

''We've been, I don't want to say struggling offensively, but we've been waiting for a game like this,'' Kane said.

 

Andrew Shaw, Brent Seabrook, Artemi Panarin and Teuvo Teravainen each had a power-play goal, helping Chicago salvage the finale of a lackluster four-game homestand. It was the Blackhawks' first game since they lost Marian Hossa to a left leg injury, likely sidelining the veteran forward for a couple of weeks.

 

''It was good that we got something positive leaving here,'' coach Joel Quenneville said.

 

Scott Darling got the start in place of a resting Corey Crawford and made 35 saves, including an outstanding sprawling stop on Nick Spaling in the second period. Two of Darling's six wins this season have come against lowly Toronto.

Mark Arcobello broke up Darling's bid for his second career shutout with a rebound goal with 8:54 remaining. Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau added a power-play goal and James Reimer had 25 saves for the Maple Leafs, who closed out a 1-4 road trip.

''Just forget it. We got tattooed, that's the bottom line,'' Toronto coach Mike Babcock said.

Goals by Brandon Mashinter, Shaw and Seabrook staked Chicago to a 3-0 lead through two periods, and the Blackhawks blew it open with an impressive flurry in the third. Beginning with Panarin's 19th goal of the season, the defending Stanley Cup champions scored on four of six shots.

Kane made it 5-0 with his 34th of the season, sending a wrist shot past Reimer on the stick side. Teravainen then stopped a 17-game scoring drought with his 10th of the season, and defenseman Viktor Svedberg converted a big slap shot from the low slot at 10:20.

Santorelli helps Ducks defeat Flames Anaheim improves to 9-1-1 in past 11 games

CALGARY -- Considered longshots before the Christmas break, the Anaheim Ducks moved two points closer to first place in the Pacific Division with a 6-4 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday.

Mike Santorelli scored twice and Frederik Andersen made 33 saves for the Ducks, who remained in second place in the division but pulled to within five points of the first place Los Angeles Kings. The Ducks have gone 16-4-2 since the Christmas break.

Hampus Lindholm, Corey Perry, Sami Vatanen and Rickard Rackell also scored for the Ducks (28-19-8). Anaheim is 9-1-1 in the past 11 games, and has points in 12 of the past 14 games (11-2-1).

"It's a little better atmosphere. We're having fun," Perry said. "Everybody knows their role, everybody's playing their role and everyone's doing the right things. It's working out right now. You just want to get in the playoffs. It doesn't matter where you are. Just get into the playoffs."

Jiri Hudler had two goals and an assist, and Johnny Gaudreau and Dougie Hamilton scored for the Flames (25-27-3). Calgary, sixth in the Pacific, has lost two straight games.

"There's still a lot of games to play but we've got to go on a streak obviously," Flames forward Mikael Backlund said. "If we can manage to do that, we'll be right in the mix but we've got to find a way to get some wins and get on a roll pretty quickly."

Perry helped the Ducks rally from a 3-2 deficit after the first period. Flames starter Jonas Hiller made the initial save on a shot by Cam Fowler from the point, but Perry kicked the rebound from his skate to his stick before tucking the puck across the goal line to tie the game 3-3 at 2:15 of the second.

Vatanen gave Anaheim the lead 1:05 later with the Ducks' third power-play goal of the game.

It's the third time in three games the Flames have allowed three power play goals. Calgary's penalty k*ll is ranked 30th at 73.4 percent.

 

"It's really frustrating," Backlund said. "We were doing so much better after Christmas and we were trying to build on it. It's tough to have so many penalties the last two games and today and not be able to k*ll them."

 

Hiller was pulled after making 13 saves on 17 shots and was replaced by Joni Ortio (nine saves) in the second period.

 

"It seemed like every shot would bounce off skates, shin pads, and get in the net," Calgary coach Bob Hartley said. "I thought I'd try to turn the game around, shake things up a little bit and get some momentum out of the change. Sometimes it works but tonight it didn't."

 

Rackell extended Anaheim's lead at 12:18. Perry curled deep in the Calgary zone before finding Rackell at the top of the circle, who beat Ortio with a wrist shot from 36 feet to put the Ducks up 5-3.

 

Hudler, with his second of the game, pulled Calgary within one with 6.5 seconds remaining in the second, swatting a rebound from Sean Monahan's wrist shot from the slot behind Andersen.

 

Santorelli restored the two-goal lead 51 seconds into the third with his second of the game to make it 6-4 after Ortio made the initial save off a shot from Josh Manson.

 

"I was fortunate," Santorelli said. "I just got the rebound. [Manson] made a great play and luckily it went over the goalie. It's always nice when you have a couple goal lead on a team. It takes off a little bit of the pressure. They still had their chances. We shut it down."

Andersen made 13 saves in the third to preserve the win.

Six Coyotes score in win Arizona has season high in goals against Canadiens

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Martin Hanzal and Oliver Ekman-Larsson each had a goal and two assists to help the Arizona Coyotes to a 6-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens at Gila River Arena on Monday.

Anthony Duclair had a goal and an assist, and Brad Richardson, Kevin Connauton and Antoine Vermette each scored for the Coyotes (26-24-6), who had 13 of 18 skaters get at least one point.

It was a season high for goals for the Coyotes, and their most since a 6-3 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Jan. 3, 2015.

Arizona has 58 points, two more than it had all of last season and four behind the Nashville Predators and Colorado Avalanche for one of two wild cards into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.

 

Dale Weise and Brendan Gallagher scored for Montreal (27-26-4), which has lost two in a row following a three-game winning streak. Canadiens goalie Mike Condon made 21 saves on 27 shots.

 

Arizona goalie Louis Domingue made 17 saves, and the Coyotes need him to go the distance.

 

Down to one NHL goalie after backup Anders Lindback was injured in an off-ice activity before warmups, they went to their emergency goalie list and called Nathan Schoenfeld, the son of New York Rangers senior vice president Jim Schoenfeld, as a replacement.

 

The 31-year-old father got to the arena about 30 minutes before the game, signed a one-day amateur tryout contract and was on the bench for the American and Canadian national anthems.

 

The Coyotes got off to another quick start, and Hanzal was in the middle of things.

 

At 4:47, Duclair set up Michael Stone for a shot from the right point that Hanzal deflected down and past Condon to open the scoring. Hanzal's ninth goal of the season was his third in the past four games.

 

Montreal got the goal back less than five minutes later. Jacob De La Rose carried the puck behind the Arizona net and slipped a pass to Weise, who put the puck past Domingue at 9:02. Weise's goal was his 13th of the season but second since Dec. 28.

 

The Coyotes regained the lead on the power play after Montreal's David Desharnais was called for tripping Domingue behind the net. Condon made the save on Ekman-Larsson's shot from the point, but Hanzal outmuscled Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin for the puck and pushed it across the slot to Duclair, who scored into a half-open net. Duclair's 16 goals are fifth among NHL rookies.

 

The score stayed 2-1 until the second period, when Montreal defenseman Greg Pateryn opened a cut on Arizona rookie forward Max Domi's nose with a cross-check to the head. Pateryn was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct, but not before Domi scrambled to his feet and earned a double minor for roughing.

 

Each team scored a goal at 4-on-4. Richardson stuffed an Ekman-Larsson feed around and by Condon at 8:04, and Gallagher answered for Montreal 2:02 later with a long shot from outside the right circle that trickled through Domingue's pad to cut Arizona's lead to 3-2.

 

But 12 seconds after Domi exited the penalty box, he set up Ekman-Larsson at the top of the circles for a wrist shot through a Duclair screen that hit off the crossbar and went in at 11:52. Ekman-Larsson's 16 goals are second among NHL defensemen, trailing the 18 of Brent Burns of the San Jose Sharks.

 

Connauton capped off the wild second period at 15:38, finishing a setup from Kyle Chipchura with a shot off the near post to make it 5-2. It was the first goal with Arizona for Connauton, who was claimed off waivers from Columbus on Jan. 13.

 

Vermette completed the scoring with a backhand shot off a Mikkel Boedker feed 4:19 into the third period.

I am a die hard Minnesota Wild fan, though I also like the Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets; the Chicago Blackhawks is my "bandwagon" team! We've been shitting the bed for the last several weeks leading to the firing of Mike Yeo! Now they have an interim coach (John Torchetti, who until recently was the coach of the MN Wild's farm team, Iowa Wild of the AHL). They just turned it around beating the Vancouver Canucks 5-2 on a road game. It remains to be seen if this coaching change really is the catalyst needed for the Minnesota Wild to turn around!

 

But seriously, Minnesota and ALL the Canadian teams are struggling at the moment! What's wrong guys?! I hope you all can turn it around cuz the NHL playoffs is frankly no fun without all the genuinely hockey crazed markets participating!

Hurricanes' power play seals triumph over Jets

 

Jordan Staal, Riley Nash score to snap Winnipeg's road winning streak

 

Playing without their All-Star defenceman and starting goaltender, the Carolina Hurricanes had to rely on strong special teams to grind out a victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

 

Jordan Staal and Riley Nash had power-play goals, and backup goalie Eddie Lack had 20 saves in a 2-1 win Tuesday night.

The Hurricanes, 8-1-3 at home since late December, are two points out of the No. 8 playoff position in the Eastern Conference. They killed off three first-period penalties and four overall against Winnipeg, which had won in each of its past five visits to Raleigh.

 

Carolina played its third game without All-Star defenceman Justin Faulk and their first full game without starting goalie Cam Ward. Ward left with an injury in the second period of Saturday's win over the New York Islanders, and Lack took his place in net.

 

Lack faced just four shots in each of the first two periods before turning away 12 of 13 as Winnipeg put on the pressure in the third.

 

"I thought (Lack) got better and better," Carolina coach Bill Peters said. "When you get an opportunity, you better capitalize on it, right?"

 

Lack, who said he was suffering from the flu, called the defence in front of him "unbelievable."

 

"Defensively, we have nothing to complain about right now," said Lack, who improved to 5-2 in his career against Winnipeg.

Carolina outshot Winnipeg 29-21, including 25-8 at one point early in the third period. Ondrej Pavelec made 27 saves for Winnipeg.

 

Blake Wheeler scored for Winnipeg with 13:08 remaining, getting credit for a deflection of Jacob Trouba's drive.

 

Jordan Staal gave Carolina the lead at 10:33 of the first with his 13th goal of the season. On a power play, he gathered a deflection to the left of the net and backhanded a bouncing puck over Pavelec, off the goalie's right leg and into the net.

The goal tied Staal for the team lead in points.

 

Nash scored on a play similar to Staal's goal, tapping in a deflection in front of Pavelec on a power play midway through the second period.

 

"It fell at his feet, and I tried to whack it," Nash said. "He tried to dive on it, and it opened up the five-hole."

Peters said Nash has been valuable and versatile on special teams and on a line with Jay McClement and Chris Terry.

 

"He's been in and out of the lineup, and now that he's in, it looks like that that line wants to stay together and give us valuable minutes," Peters said.

 

Elias Lindholm assisted on both goals for Carolina.

Eriksson lifts Bruins over Blue Jackets Bergeron scores in return, Marchand has seven-game goal streak ended

COLUMBUS -- Loui Eriksson, in his 700th NHL game, scored 33 seconds into overtime and the Boston Bruins defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 at Nationwide Arena on Tuesday.

Eriksson scored his 20th goal this season with an easy tap-in off a pass to the side of the crease from defenseman Torey Krug.

Patrice Bergeron, the Bruins' leading scorer, returned after missing two games with a lower-body injury and defenseman Adam McQuaid returned after missing 18 games with an upper-body injury.

Bergeron scored and Brad Marchand had his seven-game goal streak ended.

Boston (31-20-6) goalie Tuukka Rask made 28 saves and his Finnish counterpart Joonas Korpisalo made 28.

Columbus (23-28-7) is 4-0-2 in its past six games.

Alexander Wennberg scored on a penalty shot, the first of his career and Columbus' first this season, at 9:54 of the first period to give the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead. He skated in, slowed down then roofed a backhander for his sixth goal this season.

Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara was forced to hook Wennberg after Scott Hartnell's pass in the neutral zone created a partial breakaway.

 

Rask had better fortune three minutes later when he used his blocker to deny a shorthanded breakaway by Brandon Saad.

 

Bergeron scored unassisted at 14:28 to tie the game at 1-1. Blue Jackets defenseman Seth Jones tried to chip the puck out of the zone, but Bergeron gloved it and fired a shot under the right arm of Korpisalo.

 

Boston plays the fifth of a season-long six-game road trip Thursday at the Nashville Predators. Columbus completes a five-game homestand Friday against the Buffalo Sabres.
