photographer
Siot, Agustin may replace AlfrancisBarangay Ginebra San Miguel has started looking for a replacement for Alfrancis Chua who suddenly resigned last Monday as coach of the Gin Kings. Team officials are not looking very far and are expected to pick one of several former coaches and current assistant coaches among several San Miguel teams in the PBA to take Chua's job. Sources said the top candidates are Siot Tanquingcen and Ato Agustin, two former head coaches with championship pedigree. Tanquingcen won three PBA titles - including two with Ginebra - while Agustin bagged one with Petron Blaze. Tanquingcen is currently with Petron as team manager, and sources said the management may put him back on the Ginebra bench. He won as coach of the Kings back in 2004-05 Transition Conference and Philippine Cup. Ginebra actually started the current season with Tanquingcen as coach, but after a poor performance during the All-Filipino conference, he was replaced by Chua - then the team consultant - just before the start of the Commissioner's Cup. Chua brought the Kings to the finals but the team was swept by Alaska in the best-of-five series. The setback forced management to bring in a slew of new coaches to assist Chua. But the coach reportedly felt insulted because he was not consulted and resigned. Agustin, a former PBA MVP who won a coaching championship with the Boosters during the 2011 Governors' Cup, was one of three new assistant coaches brought to Ginebra. The others were University of the East coach Boycie Zamar and Petron assistant Jorge Gallent. Ginebra official and PBA Board of Governors chairman Robert Non met with the players and coaches yesterday after the team's practice. No details were available regarding what Non announced to the team. The practice was conducted by assistant coaches Agustin, Gallent, Art dela Cruz and Freddie Abuda. WHEN WILL SMC REPLACE EALA???? Now, bring back Chua, or as per Bal David... Ibalik si Jawo. WHILE several names are being tossed around as Barangay Ginebra begins the search for a replacement for head coach Alfrancis Chua, a former Gin Kings star has only one name in mind. Former Ginebra point guard Bal David thinks the best man to lead the Kings at this time is none other than the legendary figure who led Ginebra during its glory years, his former coach Robert Jaworski. “Biased man tayo pero tingin ko bagay na bagay si Coach Jawo dyan, saka para maibalik ang old school (na Ginebra),” said David, who remains a popular figure among Ginebra fans a decade after retiring. “Si Coach Sonny talaga ang kunin. Baka sakali, pwede pa 'yun. Dadagundong ulit ang mga venue nun,” added the boyish-looking cager. “It’s about time. Madagdagan pa lalo ang fans ng Ginebra nun.” The 40-year-old denied he has been offered the head-coaching spot in the wake of Chua's resignation, a rumor ignited by superstar Mark Caguioa's cryptic tweet that goes: “This is weird but i had a dream about Bal David i miss this guy sya ang nag guide sa amin ni jj when we were rookies #THEFLASH” The former University of Santo Tomas star said he is open for a return to Ginebra now that he, his wife Yen and the their three kids are back in the country after staying for years overseas, but he was the first to admit that a head-coaching job will be too big for him. “Maganda rin para sa akin ang bumalik sa Ginebra, dyan tayo galing eh. Basketball yan eh. Mahal natin yan,” said the Cubao-born player. “Head coach? Patay tayo dyan (laughed). Wag head coach ha. Mahirap pa yan. Masakit sa ulo yan … tatanda tayo dyan. Masyadong ma-pressure,” David added. “Na-feel ko ang pressure ng coach nung hinawakan ko ang Fern-C (in the PBL). Kung andun siguro si Big J. Basta pinatawag tayo, game tayo dyan." Meanwhile, David bared that he can relate to the situation Ginebra players are experiencing after Chua's shock departure, having gone through the same low after Jaworski left the team in 1998. “Ganyan din kami nun. Devastated talaga kami,” he said. “Madami nagbigyan ng break si coach Al eh, ganyan din halos yung sa amin nun. Kaya talagang mabigat sa loob. Nakakalungkot yun. “Pero dapat move on lang talaga. Syempre may pamilya ka rin na kailangang suportahan so kung magmumukmok ka lang sa pagkawala ng coach mo, walang mangyayari. Tanggapin na lang kung sino ang ibigay,” he said. photographer
SMC SHAKEUP CONTINUES, CHUA ON LEAVEA new atmosphere enveloped the camp of San Miguel Corporation after management decided to transfer consultant for basketball operations Noli Eala to a different assignment. In a statement released by SMC, Eala will "help out in the company's infrastructure businesses as various projects are now either in full swing or at the development stages." "The Company believes that Eala's managerial expertise and experience with various companies he handled in recent years will be very valuable in his new assignment in infrastructure, one of the high-growth areas for the company." said the release. At the same time, SMC management granted the request of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel head coach Alfrancis Chua for a leave of absence due to personal reasons. It is not known, however, when Chua will return to the post. Netizens pointed to Eala as the reason for several movements among the three San Miguel Corporation teams, something which the former PBA commissioner denied. "SMC assures the public, particularly its basketball fans that the operations of its basketball teams will continue to run smoothly despite Eala's new role in the organization,' said the release Edited July 18, 2013 by photographer Quote Link to comment

I mean, after Rudy Hatfield's retirement? It really depends to what te Bolts wants. I mean i wonder if it is wise to give up anyone now for Asi considering he is already 40. One or two second round picks should be a fair trade for his rights imho. Quote Link to comment
*kalel*
asi should stay in the abl if he wants to return to the pba, play again for meralco ... ginebra does not need him.... ginebra should learn from the mike cortez deal and not waste anyone from their roster.... Quote Link to comment
Agent_mulder
All of this is a distraction to the players. One thing i can say, bilib ako ke Al Chua maski noong nasa tanduay pa s'ya, kaya nanghihinayang ako sa naging decision n'ya na mag take ng leave of absence. 'Yan ang hirap sa smc management eh, tindi ng pulitika sa said management, tama ang sabi ng isang nag post, just look at what happened to Jaworski back then na parang wala man lang naging contributions in the past sa Ginebra.... Kazekage.Gaara
Eto. Fresh from SPIN.PH... ATO Agustin is set to be named the new head coach of Barangay Ginebra for the PBA Governors Cup while former coach Alfrancis Chua is set to move up to team manager. Agustin assumes the coaching reins just three weeks after joining the Ginebra organization from Petron, where he won a maiden league championship before being replaced by Olsen Racela at the start of the 2012-13 season. Team insiders explained that Agustin got the nod since the former league MVP had the most head-coaching experience from among the Ginebra staff left after Chua's surprise resignation last month. “Siya ang may experience sa coaching pool. Kaya siya ang nilagay,” said the source. The other members of the Ginebra staff are Boycie Zamar, Art dela Cruz, George Gallent, and Freddie Abuda. Allan Caidic and Juno Sauler are also expected to rejoin the staff after La Salle's season in the UAAP. On the other hand, Chua, who was prevailed upon to file a leave of absence instead of a resignation after Noli Eala was removed from his post as San Miguel Corp.'s consultant for basketball operations, is set to stay on, after all, although in a different capacity. The decisions were announced by before the players in the presence of SMC boss Ramon S. Ang on Thursday afternoon at the company’s office in Ortigas. Agustin will begin his coaching reign, on an interim basis, at the team’s practice on Friday morning at the Reyes Gym in Mandaluyong. Heeding a clamor from players and coaches, Ginebra is set to name Chua the new team manager replacing Robert Non, the current team governor who held the post briefly in a concurrent capacity. “Nakiusap talaga kami sa management na sana huwag alisin si coach Al totally sa set-up,” said a player who asked not to be named. “We want his presence in the team. He has been an inspiration to us and how he motivates the team will always be missed,” he added. Another player told Spin.ph that even members of the management were one with players in asking that Chua stays on, even in a different capacity. Quote Link to comment
fatchubs
Is Boycie Zamar next in line for Ginebra head-coaching job?IT looks like the coaching saga at Barangay Ginebra is far from over. Sources said newly appointed coach Ato Agustin will only call the shots for Ginebra in the coming Governors Cup and will give way to current University of the East mentor Boycie Zamar at the start of next season. Zamar is the latest addition to the Ginebra coaching staff, and is reportedly the personal choice of San Miguel Corp. big boss Ramon S. Ang who was impressed by his work with the Warriors in the college leagues. However, the veteran coach is not available to step into the Ginebra job after Alfrancis Chua's surprise resignation since he is still tied down with the Red Warriors until the end of the UAAP season in October. The season-ending Governors Cup kicks off on August 14. The SMC plan, sources said, is to name Agustin as head coach of San Miguel Beer in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) after his stint with Ginebra, replacing Leo Austria who will take over at Petron. Like Zamar, Austria, who led the Beermen to their maiden championship in the last ABL season, won't be available for a PBA head-coaching job until the end of his commitment with Adamson in the UAAP. Spin.ph tried to contact San Miguel head of basketball operations Robert Non for confirmation on Friday, but he is not taking calls. The development should come as a surprise to Ginebra's legion of fans, most of whom are expecting Chua to return to the head-coaching position beginning in next season's Philippine Cup. The fiery mentor resigned last week but was persuaded by team management to take a leave of absence instead. He was appointed by Ang as Ginebra's new team manager on Thursday. If the plans push through, Chua will remain as team manager when Zamar takes over next season, which will kick off on November 17. Chua is also unavailable for comment. (For full story on Agustin's appointment, see Ato Agustin named new Ginebra coach as Chua moves up to team manager) However, it is unclear if the plans are cast in stone or flexible enough to be changed if Agustin comes up with an impressive performance with the Gin Kings in the Governors Cup. Agustin led Petron to the Governors Cup championship two seasons ago. Meanwhile, American coach Todd Purves is expected to arrive on Friday from a scouting job with the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA Summer League to join the Petron coaching staff. The former Indonesia Warriors head coach in the ABL has been named as Petron's new team consultant where he is expected to guide interim coach Gee Abanilla. http://www.spin.ph/s...oaching-job-v02 Edited July 26, 2013 by fatchubs Quote Link to comment
