Barangay Ginebra Kings

All of this is a distraction to the players. One thing i can say, bilib ako ke Al Chua maski noong nasa tanduay pa s'ya, kaya nanghihinayang ako sa naging decision n'ya na mag take ng leave of absence. 'Yan ang hirap sa smc management eh, tindi ng pulitika sa said management, tama ang sabi ng isang nag post, just look at what happened to Jaworski back then na parang wala man lang naging contributions in the past sa Ginebra....

Eto. Fresh from SPIN.PH...

ATO Agustin is set to be named the new head coach of Barangay Ginebra for the PBA Governors Cup while former coach Alfrancis Chua is set to move up to team manager.

Agustin assumes the coaching reins just three weeks after joining the Ginebra organization from Petron, where he won a maiden league championship before being replaced by Olsen Racela at the start of the 2012-13 season.

Team insiders explained that Agustin got the nod since the former league MVP had the most head-coaching experience from among the Ginebra staff left after Chua's surprise resignation last month.

“Siya ang may experience sa coaching pool. Kaya siya ang nilagay,” said the source.

The other members of the Ginebra staff are Boycie Zamar, Art dela Cruz, George Gallent, and Freddie Abuda. Allan Caidic and Juno Sauler are also expected to rejoin the staff after La Salle's season in the UAAP.

On the other hand, Chua, who was prevailed upon to file a leave of absence instead of a resignation after Noli Eala was removed from his post as San Miguel Corp.'s consultant for basketball operations, is set to stay on, after all, although in a different capacity.

The decisions were announced by before the players in the presence of SMC boss Ramon S. Ang on Thursday afternoon at the company’s office in Ortigas.

Agustin will begin his coaching reign, on an interim basis, at the team’s practice on Friday morning at the Reyes Gym in Mandaluyong.

Heeding a clamor from players and coaches, Ginebra is set to name Chua the new team manager replacing Robert Non, the current team governor who held the post briefly in a concurrent capacity.

“Nakiusap talaga kami sa management na sana huwag alisin si coach Al totally sa set-up,” said a player who asked not to be named.

“We want his presence in the team. He has been an inspiration to us and how he motivates the team will always be missed,” he added.

Another player told Spin.ph that even members of the management were one with players in asking that Chua stays on, even in a different capacity.

Is Boycie Zamar next in line for Ginebra head-coaching job?

IT looks like the coaching saga at Barangay Ginebra is far from over.

Sources said newly appointed coach Ato Agustin will only call the shots for Ginebra in the coming Governors Cup and will give way to current University of the East mentor Boycie Zamar at the start of next season.

Zamar is the latest addition to the Ginebra coaching staff, and is reportedly the personal choice of San Miguel Corp. big boss Ramon S. Ang who was impressed by his work with the Warriors in the college leagues.

However, the veteran coach is not available to step into the Ginebra job after Alfrancis Chua's surprise resignation since he is still tied down with the Red Warriors until the end of the UAAP season in October.

The season-ending Governors Cup kicks off on August 14.

The SMC plan, sources said, is to name Agustin as head coach of San Miguel Beer in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) after his stint with Ginebra, replacing Leo Austria who will take over at Petron.

Like Zamar, Austria, who led the Beermen to their maiden championship in the last ABL season, won't be available for a PBA head-coaching job until the end of his commitment with Adamson in the UAAP.

Spin.ph tried to contact San Miguel head of basketball operations Robert Non for confirmation on Friday, but he is not taking calls.

The development should come as a surprise to Ginebra's legion of fans, most of whom are expecting Chua to return to the head-coaching position beginning in next season's Philippine Cup.

The fiery mentor resigned last week but was persuaded by team management to take a leave of absence instead. He was appointed by Ang as Ginebra's new team manager on Thursday.

If the plans push through, Chua will remain as team manager when Zamar takes over next season, which will kick off on November 17.

Chua is also unavailable for comment.

However, it is unclear if the plans are cast in stone or flexible enough to be changed if Agustin comes up with an impressive performance with the Gin Kings in the Governors Cup.

Agustin led Petron to the Governors Cup championship two seasons ago.

Meanwhile, American coach Todd Purves is expected to arrive on Friday from a scouting job with the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA Summer League to join the Petron coaching staff.

The former Indonesia Warriors head coach in the ABL has been named as Petron's new team consultant where he is expected to guide interim coach Gee Abanilla.

frankly, hindi ako nagagalingan ke chua as a coach or to say the least, sa technical coaching.... however i respect the guy because he has the experience... kaso di ko rin gusto si ato as coach for ginebra... i like siot and jong but apparently having them back might not be the best for the team either...

Malabo na si Jong as he is now with meralco, Ato and Olsen, though I have a lot of respect for both these guys as a player pero ang maging coach sila ng fave team ko is a no-no, Al Chua did a heck of a job in his first try. Kung ke Ato at Olsen lang mas gusto ko na si Chua o kaya naman si Pido Jarencio o kaya si Jaworski na lang.

what's wrong if it would be olsen?

With a lineup as good as Petron, where has Olsen brought them? I know na nasa players yan, pero Olsen was a good pointguard. Not a good coach. Nothing against Racela pero he has a LOT to live up to and hindi BGSM ang dapat pinagppraktisan. Tama yung move na assistant coach muna sya, wag head coach agad after retirement.

To say the least... Olsen is like Jong and Siot. Poor player rotation ang sakit.

Amen. Ulitin ko lang, for me, BGSM is no place for a new coach practicing his wares.

Pido could be a good coach, specially his their hitman during '90s.

Jaworski gives props to Japeth's dad

ABS-CBNnews.comPosted at 07/31/2013 6:56 PM | Updated as of 07/31/2013 6:56 PMMANILA, Philippines – Gilas member and new Ginebra player Japeth Aguilar felt proud when his father was mentioned by Robert Jaworski when the latter paid the national team a surprise visit.

Japeth’s father, Peter Aguilar, once played as a backup center under Jaworski in Anejo Rhum 65 (the old name of Barangay Ginebra) during the early 1990s.

“Nung na-meet ko siya (Jaworski), sobrang na-inspire ako kasi kinamayan niya lahat ng mga players, pero pagdating niya sa akin, ako lang ni-recognize niya,” Japeth told Spin.ph’s Richard Dy.

“Sabi niya, ‘O Japeth,’ sinabi niya pangalan ko, ‘Iyung tatay mo player ko dati. Mahusay din.’”

Japeth, who was recently acquired Ginebra from GlobalPort, said that what made him even more proud was that Jaworksi remembered his dad despite all the players he has handled.

“Nakaka-inspire kasi di ko inexpect 'yun since sa dami niyang (Jaworski) nahawakan na players, tapos maalala niya pa ng ganun ang papa ko. Malaking bagay yun para sa akin,” he said.
