photographer
Beginning 2013 with a bang: Ginebra replaces Tanquingcen with Chua By Snow Badua December 31, 2012, 08:54 pm http://contents.spin.ph/image/siot-alfrancis.jpg Alfrancis Chua has built a reputation as a 'players' coach' who never fails to bring the best out of his players, which should bode well for a Ginebra team that has largely underperformed in the past few seasons under Siot Tanquingcen. Jerome Ascano BARANGAY Ginebra opened the new year with a bang, replacing Siot Tanquingcen with Alfrancis Chua in a coaching change aimed at bringing the best out of the Gin Kings’ talented but underperforming lineup. According to Ginebra officials, Tanquingcen was informed of management’s decision on Tuesday as the league’s most popular team looks to go in another direction after a string of disappointing performances under the former University of Santo Tomas role player. Tanquingcen has won three PBA championships in his career but none since the 2008-2009 season. Under him, Ginebra has not reached the finals over the last four conferences. There had been uncertainty over Tanquingcen’s status since the start of the season, and his status became even more tenuous after the Kings failed to advance past the quarterfinal stage in the Philippine Cup. A top Ginebra official said Tanquingcen will be asked to slide down to assistant coach, a position he previously held under Jong Uichico. He will also receive the same compensation he got as head coach, the official added. The official also said the team will soon announce another big development following the coaching change. Now that position has been given to Chua, who assumed the head-coaching position at Ginebra barely a year after coming out of a long break from coaching to join Tanquingcen’s staff as an assistant. Chua has had a successful career in the amateur leagues and made his coaching debut in the pro league with Tanduay in 2000. The long-haired mentor’s last head-coaching stint was with Sta. Lucia in the 2006-2007 season. Chua has yet to win a PBA championship but has built a reputation as a ‘player’s coach’ who brings the best out of his players, which should bode well for a talented Ginebra team that has underperformed under Tanquingcen. Sources said the Ginebra job has long been offered to Chua, but he had repeatedly declined until now. Quote Link to comment
photographer
Over the Hill? Ginebra keeps fingers crossed as import's woeful shooting a cause of concern By Snow Badua December 31, 2012, 08:19 pm http://contents.spin.ph/image/nbadotcom-hill.jpg Herbert Hill has earned a reputation as a poor free-throw shooter during his career. nba.com HE still has to set foot on Philippine soil, yet NBA veteran and incoming Barangay Ginebra import Herbert Hill is already the talk of the town – nay for the wrong reason. Hill’s reputation has apparently preceded him, and his poor numbers from the perimeter and from the free-throw line have caused concern among the legion of Ginebra fans weeks before the start of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. Basketball forums and fan sites have been filled with debates over the pedigree of Hill, the 28-year-old former Providence College star whose Achilles heel is apparently his free-throw shooting, having made just 43 percent of his charities in college. Worse, the Utah Jazz draftee from the 2007 NBA rookie class fared even worse from the stripe when he turned pro, his average hitting a low of 33 percent from the charity line in 2009. His reputation as a poor perimeter shooter and an even worse free throw shooter has caused trepidation among fans, especially following Ginebra’s experience with celebrated reinforcement Jackson Vroman, himself a pitiable free throw shooter, last season. With Vroman as import, the Kings failed to get past the semifinal stage of this same tournament last year, losing to eventual champions B-Meg Llamados. Still, Ginebra officials said they are willing to give the Ulm, Germany-born big man a chance to put a lock on his place in the team when he reports for duty on Sunday. But at the same time, Kings official said they have enough time to seek out other options in the event Hill fails to live up to expectations. The tournament, which features imports of unlimited height, kicks off on February 8. The league’s most popular team converge for its first practice of the year on Thursday. Quote Link to comment

*kalel*
another news that if it pushes through is not as good as it may seem for me.... A BLOCKBUSTER trade that was supposed to be consummated in early December but bogged down after Japeth Aguilar decided to accept a practice player role with the Sta. Cruz Warriors in the NBA D-League may yet push through. But first things first: Aguilar must come home. According to sources privy to the negotiations, a deal had all but been sealed that would have seen big men Kerby Raymundo of Barangay Ginebra, Globalport’s Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Meralco’s Jay-R Reyes, and Aguilar switching places in a virtual game of musical chairs. The deal, sources said, was already on its way to the PBA Commissioner’s Office for approval when one of the teams backed off, largely because of the uncertain status of Aguilar. Talk ‘N Text still holds the signing rights on Aguilar, whose contract with the Texters expired in August. But teams are having second thoughts acquiring the 6-9 center in a trade until it has become certain that he has decided to go back for good and sign a contract with a PBA team. “Sayang yun, nasabi na sa akin yun eh. Inaabangan ko nga sana na matuloy yun,” said one of the players involved in the deal who admits keeping his fingers crossed that the trade would push through. Under the terms of the multi-team agreement, Globalport would send the controversial Al-Hussaini to Talk N Text for the rights to Aguilar, who in turn would be sent to Ginebra for Kerby Raymundo. Raymundo would then be sent to Meralco, with Globalport ending up with Reyes. Sources said the deal, which would have seen Al-Hussaini reuniting with college coach Norman Black at Talk ‘N Text and Aguilar reinforcing Ginebra’s frontline, may still be revived once Aguilar decides to come home for good. At the moment, Aguilar is in Amsterdam for a European tour with the Warriors, and has not made any decision on his PBA future. His Philippine-based agent, Marvin Espiritu, said the former Ateneo slotman is still hoping against hope and waiting for offers from other D-League teams. Still, Espiritu is hopeful Aguilar will stay true to his promise of returning to the PBA come the Commissioner’s Cup, which kicks off on February 8. “Siguro after nung European tour nila, first week of January malamang tapos na yun,” said Espiritu of his player’s commitments. “Alanganin kasi na bumalik siya ng kalagitnaan ng Philippine Cup, pero mukhang pabalik na siya rito.” “Si Japeth naman babalik at babalik sa Pilipinas yan eh. Mga one week from now yan, malalaman na natin,” he added. Source: Snow Badua, SPIN.ph Quote Link to comment
munchkins and donuts
I don't like Alfrancis Chua, pero if he will get the job done then well okay. But for the love of God, I will stop watching their games if Rabeh or Japhet dons a Ginebra uniform. They have no business with Ginebra. Quote Link to comment

munchkins and donuts
Mas may "Jaworski vibe" nga si Pido eh. Sayang. But the reason he left UST is to take the Barako Bull offer, no offer from Ginebra. Quote Link to comment
RED2018
Mas may "Jaworski vibe" nga si Pido eh. Sayang. But the reason he left UST is to take the Barako Bull offer, no offer from Ginebra. Pido would have chosen to join Ginebra; sadly, wala ngang offer and Barako Bull was quick enough to the draw. Let's just hope Alfrancis' style matches that of the Gin Kings. You're right in saying that Pido has the Ginebra pedigree... Quote Link to comment
