o0onapstero0o
You must be referring to the 1997 season, when Gordon's Gin won the Commisioner's Cup with Chris King as import. Nope, Patrimonio won the MVP award that season. Aquino had a good season as well, as he was named to the mythical 1st team, together with Patrimonio, Asaytono, Abbarientos, and Hizon. but do marlou doesnt have mvp award in his credit? encounter_doc
but do marlou doesnt have mvp award in his credit? Answer is no. Aquino's best seasons were during his first 2 years in the PBA (96 and 97). He was ROY in 96 and also a member of the mythical 1st team. Ginebra went on to the finals of the Governor's Cup where Aquino won the Best Player of the Conference (I think he was the 1st rookie to win the award), but lost to Alaska which won the grand slam that year. He eventuallly won a title with Ginebra during the 97 season (Commissioner's Cup), and another mythical team selection. Aquino's best year with Sta Lucia was in 2003, when he was named to the Mythical 2nd team. After 2003, Aquino's production has declined. Quote Link to comment

encounter_doc
Please take note that the MVP is awarded based on a season's performance. It doesn't mean that if a player had a good career, then he should have won an MVP award. It would be great if posters would also identify the year in which a player should have won the award. encounter_doc
hector "the director" calma Calma's best years were in the late 80's, specifically 87, 88, and 89. Although he was named to the mythical 1st team in those 3 years, it might be taking it a little bit too far to consider him an MVP-worthy player. During those 3 years, his averages were 10.6 ppg and 5.3 apg. The reason I say this is because, unfortunately in the PBA, statistical production accounts for 50% in the MVP race. Calma just does not have enough stats to go up against Guidaben, Fernandez, and Paras who won the MVP in 87, 88, and 89 respectively. If we are using the NBA style wherein MVPs are determined purely by voting, then some voters could argue that Calma, beyond the numbers, was the most important player in the SMB lineup during those championship years. Think of Steve Nash, whose stats can be considered inferior to the likes of Kobe, KG, LBJ, etc., but his 2 MVPs is a testament of how important he is in the Sun's lineup. Quote Link to comment
encounter_doc
Francis Arnaiz should have won the first MVP award if not for the twisted notion then that the MVP should come from the team that won the latest championship (Crispa). Toyota won the first 2 of 3 titles in that year. A little bit PBA history / trivia ... Actually, from 1975 to 1979, the league MVP for the entire season was decided after only the first conference (All Filipino). So that means Adornando (1975, 1976), Hubalde (1977), Jaworski (1978), and Co (1979) got their MVPs because of their performance in the AFC only. Hubalde and Jaworski were deserving as they played well during the entire season that they won their respective MVP awards. Yes, there was a good case for Arnaiz in 1975 as he played well the entire year. Ditto for Atoy Co in 1976, because Adornado got injured after he won his 2nd MVP plum (after playing just 1 conference). Fernandez had a good 1979 (entire) season also, so you could make a case that El Presidente should have won 5 MVPs. Cezar was the first player (1980) to win an MVP that was based on a season-long (3 conferences) performance. (off topic) Did you know that the first "All-Filipino" conference (1975) had 3 imports: Byron "Snake" Jones (Toyota), Israel Oliver (Noritake), and Charles Walker (U-tex). Quote Link to comment
jacolitos
Kerby Raymundo should have won the MVP Award and not James "Kris" Yap. Quote Link to comment

YeN_TaW
Danny Seigle - he proved he can bring the team even without Danny Ildefonso Samboy Lim - sayang injured kasi Nelson Asaytono - one man team, under dog pa lahat ng team mates niya and yet 2 championship appearance. *Jerry Codinera sana but Alvin was there e Quote Link to comment
bill_262003
Jojo Lastimosa 1996 Grandslam of Alaska, MVP that year was Johnny A. But it was Jolas who was the clutch performer and the more consistent performer. 1998 Almost another grandslam year for Alaska. But with the Asian Games (jolas was part of it, Alaska didn't win the grandslam and instead only won 2 our of 3 conferences). The 90s was the year of Alaska and Jolas deserved to have won an MVP in any of the years they won a championship. IMO. Quote Link to comment

khilua23
Rudy Hatfield nung 2003 PBA season. he should've won the award instead of Asi.Yes, the Asi led TNT beat the H-Bomb led Tigers in the All Filipino Cup, but the Tigers won the reinforced conference championship in the same year as they went for their 2nd finals appearance in that year. Quote Link to comment
khilua23
to add: the tigers also went to the finals against alaska in the same year. so, sa 3 conferences nung 2003, laging nasa finals ang coke. but still, Rudy Hatfield lost to Asi for the season MVP Award. Quote Link to comment
