try this...

Start Regedit

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

Edit the key PowerOffActive and give it a value of 1

or try updating the bios

or Right click Computer, Properties, Advanced tab, Settings button under Starup and Recovery, uncheck Automatically Restart. - check if you get an blue screen error

just check the registry if it shows the same values...or try to disable all your start up programs

Thanks for the advise, unfortunately, hardware problem pala ang problem.

Check If Your PC Supports 64-Bit Windows 7

If you have bought or upgraded your computer in the past couple of years, with an Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent/higher processor, your PC is already equipped to run 64-bit Windows 7. If you want to make sure, you can do any of the following:

If you are running 32-bit Windows Vista, go to Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Performance Information and Tools. Click View and print details. In the System section, you can see whether your PC is 64-bit capable.

You can use the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to find out if your system can run 64-bit Windows 7.

Check the Windows 7 Compatibility Center to see if your devices have 64-bit drivers.

When You Should Use 32-bit

There are some situations in which you are better off using 32-bit Windows 7:

If you use only 2GB of RAM, and do not plan to upgrade anytime soon. To really take advantage of 64-bit Windows 7, you need minimum 4GB RAM.

You have legacy devices like scanners and printers that do not have 64-bit device drivers. 32-bit drivers are not supported under 64-bit Windows 7, so you should make sure all the devices you need to use are compatible with 64-bit.

You run old 16-bit applications that were developed for Windows 3.1 or DOS. These won’t run under 64-bit Windows.

have you already checked the ati catalyst center settings?

try this:

- Set your resolution to anything below your usual resolution.

- Right-click your desktop, and go to the Catalyst Control Center. Set it to advanced mode if it's not already.

- At the top left, click the "Graphics" menu, and then "Desktops & Displays".

- For your desired display, click the little black triangle in the bottom part of the screen, on the LITTLE picture, not the BIG one, and click "Configure".

- The scaling options will now be selectable, check the "Enable GPU scaling" box and select "Maintain aspect ratio". Hit Apply.

- Set your old resolution back. Even though the forementioned scaling controls are greyed out and you can actually see "Scale image to full panel size" grey-selected, don't worry.

- Go play your games!

Thank you Samantha,

I inadvertently loaded 64 bit, which seems to work fine, but I am inclined to re-load 32 bit to be sure,

I have some follow up questions:

How do I go about doing this? re-loading win7 32 bit over current 64 bit?

I can't seem to find sound driver for win 7 for my laptop (compaq presario V5000...)

compaq and ms websites don't seem to have the drivers either...

tedious but win7 seems quite fantastic, hope i can load it flawlessly on my old laptop..

many thanks for your expert advice

let me help though can't quite understand what u need.

if u just want to copy the files from one of the profiles in ur old HDD, just create an administrator account.

but if what u are saying is the old HDD is the 1st boot, then u'll just have to change the boot sequence from ur laptop's BIOS configuration .. ;)

hmm, let me try to explain, i pulled out the old 60G HDD from my laptop, with its admin XP passwords and permissions in it,

I then installed a new 80 G HDD, loaded XP into it, and put the old 60 G into an enclosure in an attempt to grab the files from it and put it into the new HDD,

but because of the Password in the 60G, I can't "grab" the files

Just install unlocker 1.8.8 .. right click the folders or files you want to grab then click unlocker,, there's an option.. 1.delete 2. rename 3. move...

select move then choose the destination you want to transfer your files.. then ok.. thats it. :thumbsupsmiley:
