is there an option to get a better CPU? The T5500 is only 1.66Ghz processor speed not 1.83Ghz as far as I know. unless its a T5550.

A T7*** Santa Rosa might be a better choice with a 4MB L2 cache, if it doesnt cost that much more.

l2 cache is the primary storage & transition memory storage area of the cpu or processor, before the ram

it's built in into the processor & the greater the cache the faster your applications run, in other words faster processing

4 mb l2 cache in a notebook (or desktop) is a very recent phenomenon., only the intel core 2 duo processors of family t7x00 have 4 mb l2 cache., the t5x00 series has 2 mb !

application dependant, for gaming & multitasking, sure the t7200 is an awesome processor @ 2,0 ghz, 667 mhz fsb, 4 mb l2 cache

the t7400 & t7600 are even faster, but the price differential is not justified i feel

i would be happy with the t7200 !

The L2 cache memory is the embedded memory on your CPU Chip. The current series of Core 2 CPU for laptops comes with 2 MB only.

Typically the cache memory helps to boost system performance and 2MB should be sufficient for most mobile processing purposes.

If you are a hardcore *pardon the punt* user, you may want to upgrade your RAM and HDD instead since changing the CPU chip is going to be more costly. Besides, you have to make sure your laptop motherboard supports the 4MB CPU models if there are any

guys, try to help us newbies out...

answer us like we are 5 years old,

what is nvidia? what is ati? what is geforce?

are they brands? why do i notice other "brands" carry these designations?

what is GS compared to GT? Inno3D to EVGA?

7300 to 8800? ddr ? (i know my MOBO is PCIExpress, but what is 16? 8? etc)

If i'm not much of a gamer (although it would be nice to have the capability), I'm interested in Flight Simulator,

and very much into photoshop and video editing

I'm ready to spend no more than P2k to P2,500

is that not enough? would i, could i get better deals in the US? online?

what do you recommend? 256k, 512k?

I'm puzzled...

guys, try to help us newbies out...

answer us like we are 5 years old,

what is nvidia? what is ati? what is geforce?

nvidia & ati - both companies are video card chipset designers who also manufacture their own cards.

geforce is one of the models of nvidia

are they brands? why do i notice other "brands" carry these designations?

Aside from manufacturing their own video cards, nvidia & ati also 'franchise' the design of the chipset to other companies.

what is GS compared to GT? Inno3D to EVGA?

GS is a lower end - normally used in business application ie displaying pictures in microsoft word, GT is the higher end - normally used in games

7300 to 8800? ddr ? (i know my MOBO is PCIExpress, but what is 16? 8? etc)

models of video cards, GeForce 7xxx series (7300, 7600, 7800, 7900) were released way back 2005-2006. Geforce 8xxx series (8400, 8500, 8600, 8800) were released last year & this year.

If i'm not much of a gamer (although it would be nice to have the capability), I'm interested in Flight Simulator,

and very much into photoshop and video editing

I'm ready to spend no more than P2k to P2,500

is that not enough? would i, could i get better deals in the US? online?

For Flight Simulator, photoshop, & video editing, get a minimum of 7600gt, & unfortunately, P2,500 is not enough. But you can buy used 7600gt at a much cheaper price from gamers who are upgrading.

what do you recommend? 256k, 512k?

For Flight Simulator, photoshop, & video editing, 256k is good enough. 512k is useful only when playing demanding games with high end videocards(8800gt up).

I'm puzzled...

I hope this helps

At Rising Sun Computers (prices last week):

7600gt & 8600gt are about P6000 (good for playing most games at 800x600 at med quality settings)

8800gt are about P14000 (for playing games at Xbox360 graphics level)

I saw availability of ati 3870 a few months ago at about P12000

prices changes from time to time depending on availability.

Don't spend your money on video cards like there is no tomorrow. Expect prices of current high end cards to fall steeply (how about 50%) within the next 2 years when the next 2 generation cards comes out, why? because today's high end cards (even on sli/crossfire setup on the fastest quadcore processors) can't play new blockbusters games like crysis without glitches at high resolution at high quality setting.

For now, if you really want to play games, rather than spending 30T on the 8800 ultra, I suggest investing in an Xbox360 or ps3 while waiting for the next next generation of video cards to come out. Believe me, you will be happier that way.

You have a valid point there but if Elrey is going to wait two years to buy today's high end card, doesnt that mean he then has to wait another two years to play the games released during that time? It's a never ending cycle and you will always have PC that will be in the state of being "upgraded". While I'm not what you would call an old skool gamer, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the pattern of hardware vs games releases, it never really coincides with each other.

I'll give you an example from personal experience. Microsoft FSX was released in October 2006 and the 8800GTX was released in November 2006, this game was considered to be a benchmark game and would bring your uber gaming rig to it's knees which it did. Early adopters of the new G80 cards realized that they were not getting the performance yield they were expecting out of this "Next Gen" card. I didn't buy this GTX because of disappointing results with the game I wanted to play, not because of what other games people are playing. When the new G92 cards came out I bought two EVGA SSC's and whacked them on an SLI setup, moved all the graphics sliders all the way to the right and much to my disappointment I manage 14 FPS while taxing from Frankfurt airport with AI traffic sliders to 70%. Some people suggested that the game is CPU intensive and I thought ok fine, I changed my CPU from an E6600 to a quad core Q6600 overclocked to 3.2ghz and guess what, it did little. The sad thing about it is, I'm not the only one. But wait, FS2004 which is the release before FSX I can play max detail at 60fps....makes sense, I have to wait for 2009 to play FSX in full detail. (this is a fact, the game developers have admitted it)

I'm not canceling out johnlove's suggestion but merely giving an insight on what it's like to wait for the next gen cards. I think the appropriate statement would be "wait for the next cards one or two generations from now, to play today's next gen games"

History repeats itself... <_<

BTW, just bought a linksys wireless router, P2,650 sa PC Gilmore, got it for P2,500 next door sa kanya sa Greenhills,

Sorry OT, but i thought I'd give the PCGilmore guys a shout out on that,

Since 2 8800gtx ultra in sli won't give you a 60 fps performance. I suggest a single 8800 gt to help you tie over until the next 2 generation of video card arrives. Check out tomshardware.com for more details.
