Singapore Slingers beat San Miguel Beermen, 71-65

By Vincent Lai (ESPN)

Michael Leblanc top-scored for the home side with 14 points, while bigmen Pathman Matialakan and Kyle Jeffers contributed with 13 apiece.

The Beermen were led by Donaldo Hontiveros' 18 points, with Mike Cortez chipping in 11 points in a valiant effort.

It was a game of attrition for the Slingers in the early going, with the home team struggling to manufacture points. Shots were not falling for Singapore, with many shots going in and out of the rim. Even Leblanc and Jeffers were missing their free throws, but they did combine for ten points in the first ten minutes.

The Beermen had it just as bad in the scoring department, and though they double-teamed the post and swarmed the perimeter to force Singapore into turnovers, their easy transition baskets just weren't falling. Hontiveros led San Miguel with a paltry five points in the first period.

Unforced errors further compounded Singapore's lack of offence, but a three from Al Vergara gave the Slingers hope as they managed to finish the first quarter leading 15-14.

The Slingers seemed to begin the second quarter well, as they always do, as Michael Leblanc drilled a trey, giving the home crowd the feeling that Frank Arsego's pep talk was having its desired effect.

However, Singapore struggled in the next few possessions, with Leblanc missing two three-pointers in a row.

San Miguel then went on a 10-0 run as Mike Cortez sank a three, banked in a floater, and hit a fadeaway in consecutive possessions to rally his Beermen, with Mick Pennisi nailing a trey to compete the run. Cortez would finish the half with nine points.

A Pathman baseline jumper ended the run, but the Slingers trailed 24-18 with five minutes left.

The Beermen then went on a scoring drought themselves as Singapore hauled themselves back into the game as the low scoring half concluded 28-25, advantage San Miguel.

Coach Siot Tanquingcen must have said something to his Beermen, as they came out breathing fire in the third quarter of the game. Hontiveros was on fire as he drilled shot after shot, forcing coach Arsego to call a timeout with 5:38 left in the third, his Slingers trailing 43-33.

Hontiveros would score 13 points in the third quarter alone, with the reigning PBA Fiesta Conference champions stretching the lead as much as fifteen points at one point.

Singapore tried to rally at this point, employing a full court press with Wong Wei Long and Hong Wei Jian doubling Cortez. The tactic enjoyed some success, as the Slingers cut the deficit to 53-45 to end the third period.

The Slingers continued pressing in the fourth quarter, and started rebounding well as Vergara and Michael Wong rained threes to pull Singapore back into the game, finally tying the game at 55 apiece with 7:30 left in the game. That's when San Miguel called time.

Both teams traded baskets as the players started showing signs of fatigue, especially on the defensive end. Play started getting sloppy as both the Slingers and the Beermen tried to pull away from the deadlock in points.

Dorian Pena seemed to have dragged San Miguel out of the melee with two minutes left in the game but Singapore's Michael Leblanc drove into the paint and initiated contact as he banked the shot home.

The forward would proceed to sink the ensuing free throw amid loud boos from the Beermen faithful, tying the score at 64-64.

Pennisi was then called for his fifth personal foul after trying to contest a Kyle Jeffers shot. The center's departure effectively decided the game in the Slinger's favour.

The Beermen were then forced to turn the game into a foul-fest to stop the clock, but the Slinger held on and sank their free throws to pull away and win the game, 71-65, at the final buzzer.
