Pacman donates P1 million; leagues also help

By Nelson Beltran (The Philippine Star) Updated September 30, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Boxing champ Manny Pacquiao has donated P1 million in cash to typhoon victims even as he enjoined his fellow Filipinos to continue praying for Divine help while he was in training in Baguio City yesterday.

I will take a rest from training on Sunday and I hope Team Pacquiao will be able to go to Manila to give relief goods to victims,” said Pacquiao in a phone patch interview.

Officials of SBP, the PBA, PBL, Liga Pilipinas, NCAA and UAAP wil also join hands this morning in a press conference at the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City to announce their charity event for typhoon victims Monday at the Araneta Coliseum.

They will hold two exhibition matches pitting the UAAP-NCAA selection versus PBL-Liga selection and Smart Gilas versus Powerade Pilipinas.

Proceeds from gate receipts will be donated to victims of storm Ondoy.

Coach Yeng Guiao is reuniting with his Tianjin Fiba Asia RP team going up against coach Rajko Toroman and his Smart Gilas developmental team.

The cream of the UAAP and the NCAA, meanwhile, join forces in this endeavor before returning to their respective teams for the closing stage of the collegiate season.

Meanwhile, PBA board chairman Lito Alvarez said there will be no tug-o-war for the services of Japeth Aguilar during the Powerade Pilipinas-Smart Gilas dream exhibition match as he’ll allow the controversial player to play for the RP developmental team.

After that, Alvarez, however, is hopeful SBP executive director Noli Eala will keep his word that they will not touch Aguilar until he has come to terms with Burger King.

“Admittedly, Japeth has no contract with the PBA. This is a noble project, so how can we say no,” said Alvarez.

“But this will be Japeth’s last game with Smart Gilas. After this project, I’ll request to SBP not to allow Japeth play with them anymore, even in scrimmages,” Alvarez added.

“He (Aguilar) must come to terms with us already. We will show how supportive we are to SBP, and I expect them to return the gesture.”

:( :( :( :( :(

"It appears the reports of boxing's death are greatly exaggerated. "Through the roof. I'm hearing through the roof. I don't want to announce anything. When I announce it, I want to be able to fully stand behind it. It's big, very big," stated Golen Boy CEO Richard Schaefer as he hinted to Michael Rosenthal of Ringtv.com that the number of pay-per-view buys for last weekend's Mayweather vs. Marquez card will indeed exceed 1 million.

"UFC goes and announces that it had a $2.4 million gate. We did three times that; we just didn't send out a press release. It's Okay," continued Schaefer, "Dana White makes all these negative comments about Mayeather. Arum makes stupid statements, saying the only entertaining thing about Mayweather is when he shoots bullets outside the ring. It's just disrespectful of Floyd. We should be proud of an American who can generate $100 million in one night, not be on the guy's ass." - Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer

Smart money’s always on Floyd

IT is no wonder he has decided he wants to be called Floyd 'Money' Mayweather - he generates bucket-loads of the stuff.

Figures do not lie and the latest numbers issued in America prove Mayweather is by far boxing's biggest attraction.

More than one million US homes bought the HBO pay-per-view telecast of his comeback fight against Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez, bringing in $32.5million. A staggering financial return, considering it was a non-title fight and a Mayweather victory was considered a foregone conclusion.

It is only the fifth time in pay-per-view history that a non-heavyweight battle has soared above the million mark.

If further evidence was needed about Mayweather's marketability, his last three fights have been seen in 4.4million American homes and produced revenue of $188million.

Mayweather's master-class against Marquez was nearly two weeks ago but fight folk on both sides of the Atlantic are still drooling at the memory.

Freddie Roach, trainer of Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan, could not resist sending Floyd a sarcastic well-done message.

It said: "Many congratulations on beating the best lightweight in the world."

Certainly, Mayweather's brilliant performance must be put in perspective.

He was facing a very much smaller man.

Nevertheless, his remarkable speed of thought and movement, at times, was breathtaking - particularly as he had been out of the ring for almost two years.

The Moneyman, who earned $6million, went through his full repertoire in a dazzling display that completely outclassed Marquez, a great fighter in his own division.

Watching Mayweather had me wondering which of the superstar welterweights I covered had the necessary tools to penetrate his seemingly impregnable defences.

Would Carlos Palamino, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran, Don Curry, Marvin Starling or Lloyd Honeyghan have been gifted enough to put an end to Mayweather's 40-fight unbeaten run?

I think not. I believe the only one who had the skills and mental strength to outfox and outfight a near faultless Floyd was Sugar Ray Leonard.

Leonard at his very best was almost perfection. If he and Mayweather were to meet today, I am sure they would shatter the pay-per-view record of 2.2million buys.

Leonard may be 53 but he still retains the same highly-charged, competitive instincts that enabled him to prevail over Duran, Hearns and Marvin Hagler in the 1980s.

So I called him at his Los Angeles home this week to ask if he thought he could have taken care of Mayweather in similar style.

Sugar Ray chuckled and said: "If only I was 25 years younger, I'd be glad to show you how to do it.

"Fighters like Mayweather come along once in a generation and I'm one of his biggest fans "He is a tremendous talent with remarkable reflexes and, in many ways, reminds me of myself. He's certainly as arrogant as I was.

"Floyd is incredibly fast and he's extremely difficult to nail with a solid shot.

"And nothing would have given me greater pleasure than to pit my wit against his.

"The one vital difference between us is that I was a much more aggressive fighter than Floyd and I also punched much harder.

"My greater strength would have been the decisive factor. But I know it wouldn't have been easy."

Fans worldwide are now hoping for a showdown between Mayweather and Pacquiao, which would be next year's Fight of the Century.

Sugar Ray added: "Pacquiao, with his blinding hand-speed, would have a great chance of winning.

"I've never had to pay to see a fight in my life but I'd put my hand in my pocket to sit at ringside for that one."

And so would I.

Now we see the lies being peddled for the 1M PPV buys for the last Gayweather fight....

Yes its 1M buys but the revenue was only $32.5M cause Tecate had subsidized 50% of the price, discounting the rate and reducing the revenue to what is now a fact....So, the Revenue went down to $32.5M lower than the PAC vs Hatton fight of about $43M revenue...

So even as they turned the high-end PPV to a mid-price service its still not exceeded the previous fight of Pacman, despite the economy had already taken off unlike at the time of PAC vs Hatton where recession was at its lowest...

Plus the arena tickets...

All the ticket for sale on PAC vs Hatton sold out, the last Gayweather fight only 75% of tickets for sale were sold...

Now who's the real Cash Cow?????

Thats why Gayweather immediately thank the sponsors after the fight....They have diluted a high-end product to a mid range offer....Ergo, people are deceived that they are making..an apple to apple comparison...with Manny's fight....GBP is a liar..

And im sure a lot of mexicans was still hoping Marquez would have a chinaman's chance against the obnoxiously arrogant

Fraudweather..

INSIDE INFO: ARUM'S ASSESSMENT OF MANNY'S TRAINING NOT GOOD

article by DEEPTHROAT

I write for a newspaper in the US and a popular sports online site, which will remain anonymous. I have published "insider information" here on MTC in the past...information that I received from insiders within Pacquiao's circle (in or around it). Below is information I want to share with you from sources that will remain unnamed.

Anyway, why do you think Bob Arum was telling everyone on media day that Manny needs to train harder? I have inside information regarding a conversation between Arum and Roach right before Media day. Apparently, Arum has seen "footage" and heard reports of Cotto's training which is going very smoothly and very effectively. The gist of Cotto's training is that he has never looked so sharp at this stage of his training. Cotto's team has dissected all of Manny's relevant fights and has prepared multiple strategies that will nullify Pacquiao's in-and-out attack strategy. Furthermore, Cotto's attack will include fighting both in the normal stance and southpaw stance that aims to confuse Pacquiao during the early, middle and late rounds (if necessary).

Upon seeing Manny's sparring performance on Media day, Arum concluded that Manny has a long way to go in his preparations in such a SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME before the Nov. 14 fight. Arum told Roach (based on Arum's reports on Cotto's training) that Manny will have no chance to beat Cotto, GIVEN Pacquiao's erratic, circus-like training camp. Arum observed that Manny is SO OVERCONFIDENT that he will beat Cotto. Roach has reported to Arum that Manny's supporters (team Pacquiao, politicians, advisers, media, etc.) have convinced Manny that he will beat Cotto, regardless of whether he trains hard or not, etc. Long story short, Manny's head has been corrupted by over confidence from his surroundings. Hence, Manny has embraced all the circus that surrounds him everyday in an effort to also boost his political aspirations next year.

This is another reason why Arum has said that a "rematch" may happen after this fight. It's not because Cotto will demand for it...it's because he sees Manny losing and Manny finally waking up and wanting a rematch. Anyway, Roach and Arum actually wanted to move training camp to Los Angeles as soon as possible (even before their scheduled departure for LA), after seeing the daily circus in Baguio. However, team Pacquiao and Manny himself has insisted against that. Pacquiao is currently ill-prepared despite news saying that he will knockout Cotto and will be too fast for him, etc. For the first time, Roach is floating false information that he thinks Manny will knockout Cotto. The true underlying status is Pacquiao is behind schedule and has a knee problem to deal with. Roach did this because to make Team Cotto think that his fighter is in top shape (which he's not). Roach is playing chess with Cotto.

Manny really needs to get his act together or there will be no mega-fight with Mayweather. Another food for thought: Mayweather is looking at another option to fight someone else either in December or January (perhaps Moseley) in anticipation of a Manny loss in November!

Exactly my thoughts. Cotto with multiple strategies and switching stances - come on, that's hardly gonna happen.

Although I still think Pacquiao's Baguio training is indeed a media circus. PMA cadets running alongside Manny, with Dyan Castillejo doing footage and asking Manny: Kaya pa ba? Can someone please shut her up and keep her far,far away?! Followed by opening ceremonies for a shoot match- too many distractions.
