Office Success And Survival Tips

Recommended Posts

The modern office is a battlefield, but you can’t go in all guns blazing. Follow our 10 tips to have a promising office life.

1 ) Don’t offer to make coffee. This is pretty self-explanatory, if you offer to make coffee, people will assume you will do so on following days and you’ll forever be stuck as the coffee-man.

2 ) Shhh! Everyone in the office assumes that if they don’t say anything, then people will think that they have nothing to say, so they offer whatever they can to a conversation. Don’t be that person, speak when you want to or need to. People will listen to you more.

3 ) Don’t upset anyone. Imagine upsetting one of your friends or family, now multiply this by 3 and that’s still not as bad as what you’ve just done. Don’t make ememies at work, you’ll definitely regret it.

4 ) Do less. This sounds weird right? But think, the less you do, the less mistakes you make. So don’t try to do everything, stick to what you’re good at when possible.

5 ) Get noticed. Volunteer for roles outside of your current project, this will get you noticed and help your networking circle.

6 ) Learn the lingo. Come to terms with different with the office jargon. This way you know what people are talking about and will never be left out of conversations.

7 ) Remember your co-workers. Who are they? What do they do? Remember people and they’ll do the same. More importantly, it will build a good foundation for a friendship or healthy working relationship.

8 ) Ignore emails. Except from your boss. If it’s really important, then people will tell you.

9 ) Look at you! Ask one of your friends/co-workers (choose wisely) to notice what your ticks or habits are. Equally, notice other people’s. Does someone have a nervous twitch? It’s always good to be one step ahead.

10 ) Encourage complaints. This one’s a bit tricky. You don’t want to do it straight away or people will take advantage, but don’t leave it too late either. By doing this people will feel more comfortable around you and respect you more. It will also boost morale and the performance of those around you.

Instead of the common knowledge given, Here are some unconventional tips for our newly employed fellows:

1. Buy two or three umbrellas: One small umbrella you keep in your bag, one big umbrella to leave at your office, and optionally, one at home.

The small umbrella is for general use, for light rain or harsh sun. The big (heavy duty) umbrella is when there is heavy rain (storm) and you need to go work or come home. It is easier and safer.

2. Leave at least 1-2 sets of clothing (including underwears) at work: This only works if you have lockers. It is useful when you need to change when you came in wet from a storm, something spilled on you, or you have gala after work.

3. Buy comfy shoes and leave work shoes at the office. Take care of that newly bought office shoes and stay comfy going to and from work. It keeps your foot joints healthy and pain free. Personally, I use loafers for commute.

4. Stay away from street food. Or at least, minimize it. It is unclean and unhealthy. While cheap, it is not good when you get used to it. Instead, make meal preps for the week. For eating out, keep it minimal as well. Don't get into the habit of eating at restaurants.

5. Stay away from Scams, Be aware of Multi-level Marketing bullshit, or Pyramid Schemes. They are there. Your co-workers. Your boss. Your friends.
