  1. GINEBRA CLOBBERS RED BULL

Barakos hobbled by injured Parada; off-form Baguio

    Sunday, 20 July 2008

Red Bull coach Yeng Guiao swore he didn’t know how they were able to finish No. 2 in the double-round elimination phase.

At the start of the Final Four Sunday, Guiao and his boys didn’t know what hit them.

Barangay Ginebra rode the momentum of its swashbuckling run dating back to the elims as it walloped Red Bull, 108-82, in Game One of their 2008 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference best-of-seven semifinals showdown at the Cuneta Astrodome.

"It’s just Game One and it doesn’t mean anything. It’s a long series and we know what Red Bull is capable of doing," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico, trying to downplay their victory.

But the Kings reigned practically on all fronts, quickly establishing control and immediately taking away the sizzle in the highly awaited match-up.

It didn’t help that the Barakos came out flat and struggled all evening, hardly looking like the team that compiled an 11-7 win-loss records in the elims for an outright entry into the semis.

The Barakos committed 27 errors and yielded 25 turnover points to the Kings. Ginebra, on the other hand, gave away only two turnover points.

The Kings, fresh from a three-day rest after easing out the Sta. Lucia Realtors Wednesday, got off to a jackrabbit start and never let up in fashioning out the wire-to-wire win.

Chris Alexander asserted himself from the opening tip, helping Ginebra set the tone early.

With Alexander outplaying Adam Parada, the Ginebra locals took the cue, outperforming their Red Bull counterparts as the Kings stretched their amazing streak to nine games.

The Kings ended up with a well-balanced job with six of them finishing in double figures. Only Leo Najorda and Jojo Duncil put in twin-digit output for the Barakos.

"We came out today with a defensive mentality, except in some parts where the game became a shootout, we thinking we can outscore Red Bull," said Uichico.

Ginebra pounced on Red Bull’s erratic first half, sitting on a 50-37 cushion at the turn.

A 16-2 advantage on turnover points was a big factor as the Kings dominated the opening half, enjoying the lead from the get-go.

Alexander threw his weight around early, piling up 10 rebounds and the same number of rebounds as against Parada’s five rebounds and two points in the first 24 minutes of play. (NC)

    The scores:

    Ginebra 108 – Alexander 16, Helterbrand 16, Caguioa 15, Valenzuela 13, Artadi 12, Menk 10, Pacana 9, Salvacion 5, Crisano 4, Escalona 3, Reavis 3, Mamaril 2, Pablo 0.

    Red Bull 82 – Najorda 19, Duncil 16, Pennisi 8, Baguio 7, Juntilla 6, Parada 6, Cruz 6, Hrabak 6, Alvarez 3, Robinson 2, Adriano 2, Bugia 1, Ybanez 0.

    Quarterscores: 26-10, 50-37, 79-57, 108-82

  2. Benson back as Realtors battle Kings in quarters

    Philippine Daily Inquirer

    First Posted 21:44:00 07/12/2008

    GAMES SUNDAY (Cuneta Astrodome)

    4:30 p.m.--Coca-Cola vs Magnolia

    6:50 p.m.--Ginebra vs Sta. Lucia

MANILA, Philippines--Of all the broken vows in the world, this has got to be the one people would gladly accept.

Unless, of course, you're Barangay Ginebra.

Lee Benson ditched his promise to leave the team and Sta. Lucia ironed out the kinks in its relationship with its import just in time for the Realtors' quarterfinal series against the Kings in the Smart PBA Fiesta Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome Sunday.

The Realtors and Benson were at odds regarding the latter's off-court habits, which included late nights out.

Deeming Sta. Lucia's policy too strict, Benson made a pair of promises to the team before the Talk 'N Text match Friday night: First, that he would lead Sta. Lucia to the quarterfinals and, second, he would play his final game as a Realtor.

The 34-year-old Benson scored 26 points and grabbed 27 rebounds to make good on his first promise as Sta. Lucia ousted Talk 'N Text, 111-96. That's when the Realtors decided to do all they can to make sure the second promise would not be fulfilled.

"He's (Benson) going to play," said Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez. "We talked to him after the game (against Talk 'N Text), and he knows now his role in the team, and he knows his importance to our team."

Coca-Cola, which will be parading a new import in Brandon Dean, also starts its best-of-three series with Magnolia in the opener at 4:30 p.m.

The Tigers replaced Donald Copeland, who had to leave in a hurry to attend a custody case back home in the US.

The Beverage Masters will lean on import Amal McCaskill and a vaunted local squad that includes Danny Ildefonso, Danny Seigle, Dondon Hontiveros, Lordy Tugade, Mike Cortez, Olsen Racela and rebounding whiz Marc Pingris.

  3. CAGUIOA, DAVID SHARE HONORS

    ...

    Monday, 07 July 2008

MOTIVATION is easy to come by for Barangay Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa and Air21’s Gary David.

Both have risen through despair borne of injuries, cranking up their games and helping their respective teams to much-needed wins that prompted the PBA Press Corps to name them as the Smart/Accel Co-Players of the Week for the period June 30 to July 6.

“Nung masama ang umpisa namin, me mga nang-a-asar, nasaan daw ang Ginebra ngayon,” related Caguioa. “Pero OK lang sa akin iyon. I feed off that kind of negativity and use it as additional motivation.”

Said experience is similar to the one David went through after the Express had a likewise listless start. Sad part of it was, he was helpless then, recovering as he was from the assortment of elbow and knee injuries that had struck him through most of the season.

But those memories have since been replaced by sweeter ones after their games came back and gave their respective coaches more weapons in their arsenal. As a direct result, Air21 added on to its franchise record by making the semifinals outright and Ginebra landed one of the three automatic quarterfinals berths.

Those are giant steps indeed for the Gin Kings, who languished in the cellar for quite a while following a 0-5 start in the tournament, and the Express, who were not even among those picked to go this deep in the season-ender.

Caguioa, who had to sit out three games with a knee injury after similarly earning the scribes’ nod for the period May 19-25, said he just wants to do his part and help his team any way he can.

This attitude was not lost on Ginebra coach Jong Uichico, who said: “I think he understands fully now what I wanted for the team and I now understand what Mark is all about, as a person and as a player. It’s a very nice feeling to have Mark playing this way now.”

Caguioa admitted the mindset came to him following his better appreciation of Uichico’s system. “Whether starter or reliever, p’wede ako. Ang gusto kasi namin, kahit sino ang nasa loob, whether ako o si (co-shooting guard Ronald) Tubid ang nasa loob, kailangan tuloy-tuloy pa rin ang energy level na ibinibigay namin sa team,” he said.

That showed in Ginebra’s 97-90 win over Alaska last Sunday that boosted it to a third place finish in the eliminations, made possible by a better quotient than Coca-Cola and Magnolia, both also toting 10-8 win-loss records.

With Tubid taken out by a suspected dislocated left ankle, Caguioa came in and scattered 12 of his 15 points in the second half, combining mostly with backcourt partner Jayjay Helterbrand, Junthy Valenzuela and Chris Alexander in fueling the Gin Kings’ surge.

Air21 needed to win over Purefoods last July 2 to add on to the Bert Lina franchise record of most wins in an elims and automatically make it to the semis for the first time. David, similarly cited May 29-June 3, typified that desire by coming up with a personal season-high 30 points, 20 coming in the second half as Air21 charged back from an early 14-point deficit to win, 113-103, and wind up with a 12-6 slate.

“We really had a missing link in our offense when he was gone dahil wala kaming instant attack in our transition offense,” said Express coach Bo Perasol. “ Kaya nu’ng bumalik siya, he added a different dimension sa opensa namin and his intensity rubs off on his teammates.”

  4. GINEBRA CONTINUES RISE, REACHES .500 MARK

Fast & Furious tandem strikes for the Kings

    Sunday, 29 June 2008

Barangay Ginebra sustained the momentum of its two-game romp despite a long two-week layoff, staying in the hunt for an outright semifinals berth with a 100-89 drubbing of Talk n Text in the 2008 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday night.

Jayjay Helterbrand erupted for 30 points and Chris Alexander came through with a huge double-double game with 22 points and 17 rebounds as the Kings beat the Pals for the first time in their last six meetings dating back to last conference.

Mark Caguioa had significant contributions with 23 points, five rebounds and three assists as the Kings defeated the Pals in a highly emotional game marred by six technical fouls and the ejection of Talk n Text import Terrence Leather.

Leather was thrown out of the game on two technical fouls and later figured in a near fight with the Ginebra players in the hallway leading the dugouts after the contest.

The Kings moved up to sixth place with an 8-8 win-loss card, just half-game behind joint fourth placers the Alaska Milk Aces and the Magnolia Beverage Masters at 9-8.

Magnolia’s 80-79 squeaker over Alaska earlier in the night gave Air21 (11-6) a free ride into the semifinals. Red Bull also benefited on Magnolia’s win, assuring itself of at least a quarterfinals berth.

Sliding to 8-9, Talk n Text is now out of the fight for an automatic passage into the semifinals.

"We’re getting the right chemistry. We’re getting along well with our import who provides as an intimidating inside presence. Our only regret is getting him a bit late," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.

"We’re not yet out of the woods. We still have to look forward to our last two games," Uichico added.

The Kings were supposed to play the Alaska Milk Aces a week ago but their game was postponed due to Typhoon Frank.

Ginebra, however, hardly lost the momentum of a two-game streak against Talk n Text.

The Pals struggled on the floor -- so much so that coach Chot Reyes called on his players to shoot free throws before letting them to their dugout at the half.

It took the Pals a 12-point explosion by Jay Washington in the second quarter as they rallied to within four, 43-47, at the turn after trailing by as many as 15 early on.

Helterbrand sizzled with 16 points for the Kings in the first half marred by a pushing and shoving match between Ronald Tubid and Macmac Cardona. (NC)

    The scores:

    Ginebra 100 – Helterbrand 30, Caguioa 23, Alexander 17, Tubid 9, Menk 8, Valenzuela 7, Artadi 2, Mamaril 2, Crisano 2.

    Talk n Text 89 – Leather 23, Washington 22, Peek 15, Cardona 12, Alapag 12, carey 2, Ritualo 2, Allado 0, Chia 0, Lao 0, Belano 0, De Ocampo 0.

    Quarterscores: 27-20, 47-43, 75-70, 100-89

  5. MANILA, Philippines - Barangay Ginebra's Jayjay Helterbrand was chosen anew as the

Smart/Accel- PBA Press Corps' Player of the Week for the period June 9 to 15.

Helterbrand earned his second straight citation from the media association after making his presence felt last week for the Gin Kings, making him the only player since Talk 'N Text's Mark Cardona to be consecutively named for the weekly honors.

Gin Kings mentor Jong Uichico said that Helterbrand is becoming a well-rounded player, thus helping his team win pivotal games.

"We all know Jayjay is a very good offensive player, but he's also been playing defense very well now. So he's getting to a different level, when he added assists and defensive aspects to his game," Uichico said.

Uichico's observation is not without basis.

In Wednesday's 89-81 win against Purefoods, Helterbrand tossed 17 points, including seven in the last 3:02 of play, helping the Gin Kings post an 11-2 run that stopped the Giants.

On Sunday, Helterbrand scored the key shots that lifted the Gin Kings against Coca Cola, 91-84.

Helterbrand connected with a triple, giving Ginebra an 89-80 advantage and when the Tigers tried to rally and moved within 84-89, the Gin Kings guard scored on a layup from his own steal in the last 14 ticks.

Helterbrand eventually finished with 27 markers, four rebounds and three assists in that game.

Those victories helped the Gin Kings to win six of their last seven matches are now waving a 7-8 slate that tied them with the Purefoods Giants and TNT Phone Pals for the sixth to eight spots.

  6. HELTERBRAND’S HEROICS LEAD GINEBRA PAST COCA-COLA

Kings win 3rd straight and 5th in last 6 games as “Fast & Furious” tandem back in action

    Sunday, 15 June 2008

JAYJAY Helterbrand must have been so glad to finally have his backcourt partner back. So much so that the other half of the famous “The Fast and The Furious” combo made sure Mark Caguioa's return to action would be a memorable one by coming up with two big plays in the endgame that enabled Barangay Ginebra to hurdle tough Coca-Cola, 91-84, Sunday night in the Smart PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.

Helterbrand drained a clutch triple that gave the Kings an 89-80 lead and followed that up a few seconds later with a fastbreak layup off his own steal that totally quashed whatever hopes the Tigers may have had of salvaging the game.

Those heroics gave Ginebra an unassailable 91-84 lead and capped a sterling all-around performance by the wily point guard, further stoking Ginebra's determined charge for a playoff spot.

“He has become a better all-around player now,” said Kings coach Jong Uichico, referring to his ace point guard who finished with a game-high 27 points aside from four rebounds and three assists. “We all know he's a very good offensive player, but he's also been playing defense very well now. So he's getting to a different level by adding assists and defensive aspects to his game.”

Chris Alexander's game-high 22 rebounds went well with his 13 points, five blocks and excellent defense on Coke counterpart Jason Dixon, while Caguioa returned from a bout with tendinitis that caused him to miss three games to score 14 points.

Uichico also gave special mention to Caguioa.

“Humiling lang ako sa kanya ng a few minutes, para dumali ang rotation. Pinagbigyan naman niya ako sa request ko, even though his knee was still hurting,” bared Uichico of Caguioa who played with his right knee all wrapped.

All those helped Ginebra to win six of its last seven games, including its last three, to improve to a 7-8 win-loss record and a tie at sixth with idle Talk 'N Text.

“Talagang we're treating each game like it's our last game of the eliminations, especially in our situation,” related Uichico. “The players are responding and it's a good sign. We're getting closer, but we're not there yet, so the next three games are really important for us to get close to the top.

“I hope we can continue that. Mindset lang naman, eh.”

The loss was erstwhile co-leading Coke's sixth in 15 games, relegating it to a tie with idle Air21.

With a 9-5 record Red Bull is left all alone at the top, and it could widen the gap should it prevail over Purefoods in the second game Sunday.

Donald Copeland, Nic Belasco and Cesar Catli, who equalled his career-high, each scored 18 points and Alex Cabagnot added 17, but the Tigers still lost, mainly when their hustle couldn't quite match Ginebra's when it mattered most.

Dixon had 11 rebounds, but he was held to just seven points, matching his lowest output in the season-ending conference which he registered then the Tigers defeated Magnolia 106-92 last May 9. He went into the game averaging 25.1 ppg.

Even Ronjay Buenafe, the highest scorer among rookies with an 11.5 ppg norm, was held to just three points.

But Buenafe's lone trey came to move Coke, which trailed by as many as 41-59 early in the third period, within 80-84, still 2:23 left.

Then came Alexander's follow-up of his second straight offensive rebound and Helterbrand's triple for Ginebra's nine-point lead, 1:02 left.

Coke refused to wilt just yet, with Copeland sinking a charity and Cabagnot booming in his own trey off Dixon's fourth offensive rebound to whittle the deficit to just five, still 55 ticks left.

Then came Helterbrand's strip, snatching the ball away from Copeland's hands and scooting home for the uncontested layup that proved to be the game's final and most decisive dagger, only 14.3 ticks left. (NCo)

    The scores:

    Barangay Ginebra 91 -- Helterbrand 27, Caguioa 14, Alexander 13, Valenzuela 11, Tubid 8, Menk 8, Artadi 4, Mamaril 4, Crisano 2.

    Coca-Cola 84 -- Copeland 18, Catli 18, Belasco 18, Cabagnot 17, Dixon 7, Buenafe 3, Talulava 3, Macapagal 0, Dimaunahan 0, Telan 0.

    Quarterscores: 23-24, 51-41, 71-60, 91-84.

  7. BARANGAY GINEBRA TURNS BACK PUREFOODS

Helterbrand, Tubid, Alexander shine anew in Caguioa’s absence

    Wednesday, 11 June 2008

Accidentally hit in the face by Reda Rhalimi midway through the fourth quarter, Jayjay Helterbrand got back at the entire Purefoods team, coming through with clutch plays at the finish.

Helterbrand scored seven points in an 11-2 closing run carrying Barangay Ginebra to an 89-81 win over Purefoods Wednesday night in the 2008 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.

Rhalimi and Chris Alexander had been in a furious battle before Helterbrand stole the thunder, leading the Kings to a second straight win curiously in the absence of injured top gun Mark Caguioa.

Alexander finished with 20 points, 16 rebounds, three assists and the same number of blocks against Rhalimi’s 28 points, 15 rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block.

The two imports taunted one another with Alexander easily winning the support of the crowd on his side. He got tremendous applause after a two-handed jam in the dying seconds for the final count.

Ronald Tubid was also there to support Alexander with the former UE Warrior producing a personal conference-high 21 points that went with nine rebounds, three assists and three steals.

"Mahirap talagang wala si Mark (Caguioa). We need guys like Jayjay and Ronald to double their efforts to compensate for the absence of Mark," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.

Caguioa is nursing a strained calf muscle. His status is day-to-day.

"Our goal is to win as many games as possible in our last few games in the elims. Hopefully, we make it at least to the middle of the pack," Uichico said.

The Kings caught up with the Giants at eighth place on their identical 6-8 win-loss cards. Ginebra’s last four games are against Coca-Cola, Alaska, Talk n Text and Welcoat.

The Kings overcame the Giants with better field-goal shooting, rebounding and passing.

But they went through a wringer, fighting the Giants through 11 deadlocks and 24 lead changes.

Purefoods went up for the last time at 79-78 on a free throw by Enrico Villanueva off a hard foul by Alexander.

Ginebra made it 44-all at the half as Tubid shook off the defense of Roger Yap then soared high for a double-pump against Villanueva at the buzzer. (NC)

    The scores:

    Ginebra 89 – Tubid 21, Alexander 20, Helterbrand 17, Valenzuela 11, Artadi 8, Mamaril 7, Menk 3, Crisano 2, Pacana 0, Wilson 0, Salvacion 0.

    Purefoods 81 – Rhalimi 28, Raymundo 12, Yap J. 10, Yap R. 10, Villanueva 9, Simon 8, Lanete 4, Sanz 0, Salvador 0.

    Quarterscores: 23-18, 44-44, 67-62, 89-81.

  8. GINEBRA SANS CAGUIOA DRUBS WILLIAMS-LESS REALTORS

Kings dominate game, get big games from Alexander, Helterbrand, Tubid

    Friday, 06 June 2008

A Sta. Lucia team minus top gun Kelly Williams proved to be an easy prey for Barangay Ginebra.

The Kings pounded and pummeled the Williams-less Realtors, again gaining ground on the pacesetters with a 112-104 victory Friday night in the 2008 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Though also missing a key player in the injured Mark Caguioa, the Kings had a relatively easy time posting their fourth win in their last five games.

The final count didn’t show the true reflection of the game since the Kings lowered down their guard after storming to a 26-point lead in the third quarter.

Torrid shooting and no-nonsense defense did it for the Kings as they avenged their 97-101 defeat to the Realtors in their previous match and jacked up their overall win-loss record to 5-8 – now two full games clear of Welcoat’s 3-10.

"Everything fell into place for us while Sta. Lucia struggled minus Kelly Williams," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.

"Good win and hopefully we’ll be able to make another run because we have a lot of catching up to do," Uichico added.

Three Kings in Chris Alexander, Jayjay Helterbrand and Ronald Tubid scored personal conference highs to lead the Ginebra juggernaut.

Alexander finished with 35 points and 25 rebounds. Helterbrand fired 31 points and Tubid rattled in 17.

The Realtors suffered a third straight loss and slid to 6-7, no thanks to the absence of Williams, who is in the United States to marry his longtime girlfriend

    there.

Jamar Brown couldn’t provide the spark. Dennis Espino also recorded a personal conference high 28 points but his explosion came a little too late to save the team from further slide.

The Realtors exploited the situation with the Kings relaxing at the finish, scoring a season-high 46 points in the final quarter.

Ginebra established control early and sat on a 55-37 cushion at the turn.

Tubid went 3-of-3 from the three-point area and Helterbrand converted four of five three-point attempts highlighting the Kings’ first-half splurge.

Alexander imposed his will versus Brown early, piling up double-double numbers with 15 points and 11 rebounds right in the first 24 minutes of play.

After a brief skirmish marked by three deadlocks and three lead changes, the Kings controlled the tempo and erected a 29-17 lead in the first quarter. (NC)

    The scores:

    Ginebra 112 – Alexander 35, Helterbrand 31, Tubid 17, Valenzuela 9, Crisano 6, Menk 5, Pacana 4, Salvacion 3, Artadi 2, Mamaril 0.

    Sta. Lucia 104 – Espino 28, Omolon 19, Daa 15, Yeo 10, Miranda 8, Mendoza 7, Brown 6, Aquino 6, Reyes 5, Mamaclay 0, Coronel 0, Gonzales 0.

    Quarterscores: 29-17, 55-37, 83-58, 112-104.

  9. BARANGAY GINEBRA ON A ROLL, WINS 3RD STRAIGHT

Helterbrand presides over offense as Kings buck Caguioa injury

    Wednesday, 28 May 2008

Enjoying the stride and confidence lacking in its game early in the tourney, Barangay Ginebra still found a way to win and sustain its streak Wednesday despite league leading scorer Mark Caguioa hurting his knee and sitting out the final half of a tight, exciting contest versus Magnolia.

Jayjay Helterbrand, Chris Alexander, Junthy Valenzuela and Ronald Tubid did the job for the team in the second half as the Kings whipped the Beverage Masters, 87-76, for a third straight victory in the 2008 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.

"My concern right now is to get the flow. Yun muna ang gusto naming makuha bago isipin ang paghabol doon sa mga teams na nasa itaas. If we can get the flow of things, winning would come later," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.

"We’ve got three straight wins already and I guess we’re slowly getting there. I’m pleased with the patience being shown by the boys," Uichico added.

Getting even with the Beverage Masters who handed them a 92-95 defeat in their previous tiff, the Kings (4-7) moved one full game in front of the Welcoat Dragons (3-8).

With the loss, the Beverage Masters slid to joint seventh with the Alaska Aces at 5-6, just a game ahead of the Kings.

Alexander churned out huge double-double numbers with 29 rebounds and 20 points with Helterbrand adding 23 points, Valenzuela 13 and Tubid nine.

Caguioa scored only six points – his lowest output since making only five in their 115-110 win over Red Bull last Jan. 4 – as the coaching staff opted not to field him back anymore after feeling some pain in his left knee late in the first half.

"Our physical therapist gave us the go-signal to play him again but we didn’t take the risk," said Uichico.

Before the game, Caguioa was averaging 25.6 points – the best in the league including the imports.

Magnolia also lost a key player in Dondon Hontiveros, who sustained an ankle sprain also in the first half.

The Beverage Masters suffered an offensive breakdown in the second half and finished with their lowest output of the season. Their previous low was 77 in a 22-point blowout by Sta. Lucia Realty last Jan. 6.

Magnolia top gun Danny Seigle struggled for a personal season-low of five points.

Helterbrand and Valenzuela banged away back-to-back three-pointers to highlight a key run that enabled the Kings to post a comfortable 13-point lead at 72-59.

It was a battle early on with the two teams fighting through nine deadlocks and 12 lead changes in the first half.
