  1. Nah. Im not here to argue as to who has the most credible opnion.i know ur professionals and im just a CASUAL FAN.. but this is a MMA Forum, so every1 has the right to speak their mind. If we all just agree to the premise of 1 keyboard warrior, then this healthy debate will be BORING. It will be just like watching a GSP fight, you just know whats gonna happen..

I watched the Silva-Sonnen fight a gazillion times. Its like watching “One More Chance”, its still amazes me everytym..when Sonnen was in AS guard, Andeson threw a big right hand that rocked Chael.then seconds after AS threw that Hail Mary triangle armbar.

In the Hendo fight, I don’t remember the exact details, but I believe Hendo ate a big right hand also before they hit the ground..then, when Lutter was caught in a triangle, AS threw consecutive 12 to 6 horizontal elbows, b4 Travis tapped.

U can all defend ur Georgy Boy, but IMO he is a pussy. Everytym he is interviewd about fighting AS, he stutter and always hesitant to answer..but, I cant blame him, after seeing Vitor got KO.btw, Vitor has never been KO b4, he was only TKOd by Randy through cuts.

I hope after GSP wins, AS will be invited to the Octagon and will say “I am not Impressd by ur per4mance, I will let you redeem yourself by fighting me”.. I wonder how GSP will react to that, knowing that he is in front of his 42K+ countrymen.

I really didn't think Chael was hurt by Anderson from the bottom during the last round of that fight. If he had been hurt though (and it is really hard to hurt someone with punches when your punching from your back) I think he had more than enough time to remember. What did him in however IMO was by the time the fourth round came around he had become so accustomed to firing punches from within Anderson's guard with almost relative ease despite having one of his hands controlled by the Spider that it seems his 'defenses' weren't up and Anderson surprised him with a triangle.

Hendo was hurt by a head kick then a straight and ended up giving his back but I also thought he had more than enough time to regain his wits about him. If I remember correctly he actually managed to pull guard and hold Anderson for a while before getting passed, mounted and stretched out on his back eventually which led to the rear naked choke.

Look we cannot blame GSP if he takes a bit of time considering whether going up a weight class or not. Again Anderson is significantly larger than him and it's not just him... Remember you have the likes of Chael Sonnen, Munoz and Okami in the same weight class among others against these guys his obvious wrestling advantage will probably stifled not only by their wrestling skill but also by the fact that these guys are larger height wise and do walk around 205-210 and cut down to 185.

  2. and i dont understand why all the advantages have to go to GSP..its either will wait for him to "properly bulk up" or AS will drop weight to catchweight or WW.

Hughes-GSP fight is the only fight that we can base GSPs BJJ defense.cause we never seen other fighters try submit him.cause he never fought an elite BJJ guy before (except for BJ)..well at least i have a basis, and not only SPECULATING.. :P :P :P

besides, AS nver submitted guys with his BJJ, he hurts them first badly. Refer to Lutter, Hendo, Sonnen fights.. you can also add that to my ancient references...

So what the heck do you suggest then? That they fight as they weigh naturally right now and meet at 185? Of course no fighter even one as talented as GSP would allow such an arrangement if he was in his right mind. You can't go in there all balls, gun blazing now a days and expect to win like they did during the 'ancient' days. Like how BJ did when he fought Machida. Right now everything (and that includes the fighting weight, training, strength and conditioning program, supplementation and all the little nuances that go into preparation for a fight) is approached with utmost detail and attention. It is only natural for a fighter to try to gain an advantage where he can especially since Anderson physically is really much larger than GSP.

The GSP before the loss to Serra is 'ancient'. The GSP who lost to Matt Hughes is even more 'ancient' People don't even remember that fighter anymore. What has happened to GSP in the last couple of years is similar to the transformation Josh Koscheck IMO has undergone. The Koscheck in the TUF house does not look anywhere near the Koscheck we have now grown accustomed to seeing in the UFC.

The Sonnen fight I don't know but that seems pretty recent to me... (that was only last year right?) In fact it was only Silva's previous fight before fighting Vitor. And we can see from the Lutter fight till that fight that not much has changed in the department of Anderson being taken down and nullified for a while and that being possibly 'the formula' to victory for anyone taking a shot at him.

He didn't have Sonnen hurt badly right before he submitted him. Sonnen became too 'overconfident' leaving his wrist controlled by Anderson as he rained blows down on him from up top for more than 4 rounds and was 'lured' in by the prospect of an impending win.

Again we are not saying he cannot beat GSP. Silva has proven time and again that he has the style and the talent to defeat anyone in the world. But GSP has the game and the talent to defeat him too. Again styles make fights and often the fighter who imposes his style, his game during the fight is the one declared the winner.

  3. he dont have to gain 20-30 pounds, just 10-15 lbs.. he already walks @ 190, so if he add just 10 lbs, he will just need to cut 15 lbs to make it to 185.. why is it hard for him and not on BJ Penn and Anderson Silva..BJ walks @ 165, yet ballooned to 192, just to fight Lyoto. and Machida couldnt even finish a bloated LW.. besides,he keeps telling how big AS is, but he is also the one suggesting the fight to be @ 170 or catch weight (that means around 180)..that's ironic..he can't add 15 lbs, and yet he suggests his opponent whom he said walks @ 230 to cut to 170?

i hope AS will be crazy enough to drop down to 170 to frontkick GSPs ass..

    1. I find it hilarious how you reference fights which are so outdated to try and prove a point. First off you try to prove GSP's submission defense (or lack thereof in your opinion) by referring to his very first fight with Matt Hughes in one of your previous posts. Now you refer to a BJ fight where he clearly was over his head (taking his alias 'the Prodigy' way too seriously) going all up to heavyweight to fight Lyoto Machida. Come on man these fights are so freakin 'ancient' you can't use them as a barometer for these guys anymore. These fighters are way way way better than what they were used to, GSP especially (and even BJ who has now finally learned the importance of a good strength and conditioning program).

    2. Again styles make fights. How many times do we have to say this. People try to make it sound so simple as if Anderson was just gonna front kick everyone in the head and knock em out with ease. All we've been saying is judging by what happened in the Sonnen and the Travis Lutter fight GSP has the 'style', the 'game' to nullify and defeat the strengths of an Anderson Silva. He can beat Anderson, not that we're saying that the Spider can't beat him but GSP has the ability to beat him. Heck I even think a Jon Fitch can give Anderson Silva problems.

    3. And about the 20-30 pound weight addition GSP has to make. I think this was something he said in one of his post fight interviews with Joe Rogan. We really can't say with certainty what he meant when he said that. GSP may have meant starting from his fighting weight of 170 or his walking weight of 190. But in any case GSP and his conditioning coaches are the ones who can say best what weight he should be at the off season if he is to make a run at 185. Different people shed weight at different rates. Different people have different ratios of lean muscle mass to body fat. Different people have different workouts and conditioning programs. Given all those differences I think GSP was just giving a 'rough' estimate of perhaps how much muscle he thought he had to put on at that time if ever the Anderson Silva fight was gonna happen. And yes the amount may be closer to around 10-15 pounds of muscle or just a little more than that. And he never said he couldn't add the pounds to go up a weight class. All he said was it was a decision that he had to be really sure of before ever trying it because once you do add those additional pounds he won't ever be able to come back and fight at welterweight.

Bottom line is both fighters have fights set. Anderson has Okami and GSP's got Shields in his sights next. Why don't we just see what happens after that. I'm sure if ever GSP defeats Shields (which I think he will do and quite handily I might add) he will strongly consider going up a weight class since there's no one left to challenge him at welterweight.

  4. dude that's why he's so dominant in 170, because he's got everything down as a science: his walking weight, his diet, weight cutting, the way he trains, etc

doesn't really sound gaywetherish to me, besides Okami had it long coming (title shot that is)

Yup. I actually remember him using shark cartilage for his joint recovery.

I think it really is more of him being 'precise' about everything than anything else. All his statements about gaining weight the right way and how there's a significant difference in size between him and Anderson at the moment are all true. Gaining about 20-30 lbs of lean mass is no joke and yes he does have to put in a significant amount of time and training to gain weight the right way (Olympus and all the other trainers here on the board would say the same thing). I think this precise, scientific approach applies to all fighters who train under Greg Jackson plus of course the fact that he has been competing in the octagon for a long time himself and has all that experience under his belt.

Oh here's a little bit of local MMA news...

The Philippine Games and Amusements Board (GAB) has now allowed 'elbow' strikes in the URCC and other professional MMA promotions. This will definitely be an interesting dynamic to add to the already flourishing MMA scene in the country (and on a personal note another reason for me to work my muay thai again. hehe.)

  5. i heard a story that Palhares submitted Big Nog during training and Eddie Bravo admitted that he tapped to white belts..is this normal? that every1 taps once in a while by a lower degree BJJ practicioner..or it just that the newbies are really that impressive?

Yes... and you do have cases when a guy who hasn't been training that long ends up submitting people of a supposedly higher BJJ pedigree.

We of course have the likes of BJ Penn and Mike Fowler to prove that.

Some teachers will actually let a lower belt 'catch' them from time to time as a teaching method too... The most famous BJJ teacher I could think of who does this is Diego Sanchez's BJJ coach and multiple time world champion Saulo Ribeiro.

  6. the guard position is actually an advantageous position, and the person inside the guard is in the least dominant position in BJJ

    tama ba chief gf?

Well not really. It's more like the guy on the bottom has 'neutralized' the top person's advantage cause he cannot attach from within the guard. If it's MMA though judges tend to look at the top guy as the one with the positional advantage cause of course in MMA you have the additional option to punch and elbow from within the guard.

If ever Palhares and Meia would ever meet in the octagon the thing is both might not actually risk goin to the ground knowing how good both of em are. What we might end up watching is two of the best grapplers in the world trying to decide who among them is the better striker so we might not actually find out who the better grappler is if they're gonna meet in the octagon. The ADCC I think would be a better venue to find that out.

  7. I think BJ also won the first 2 rounds. If BJ maintained the status quo in the third round, meaning he did in the third round what he did in the first 2 rounds, I think he would have won handily.

Yup correct. Kaso... knowing BJ (again) right at the very end of the 2nd round he looked really really gassed out. He really is I think better suited to just campaigning at lightweight IMO.

  8. i agreed with the draw.but if they adapt the Pride rules (w/c IMO they should be,since the only significant event in the 1st 2 rounds were the takedowns of BJ and subsequently reversed) Fitch is the clear winner...wla tlgang kwenta c BJ in the long run..hehe..he shud go back to LW where he belongs..

Only the 2 takedowns mattered in the first two rounds? Nope. BJ had Fitch's back both times after both take downs with both hooks in and he threatened both times with a rear naked choke. If you're to follow the UFC judging criteria ('effective striking, grappling, aggression and octagon control') then you'll clearly see that BJ might have handily won both rounds 1 and 2 on the basis that firstly there hardly was any striking in both those rounds and he clearly had him beat in two out of the other three criteria. For those here who have no experience in BJJ tourneys let me tell you the back mount with hooks is one of the highest positions of advantage and has the highest number of corresponding points (together with the full mount) in BJJ.

Fitch is my hero but I actually scored the first two rounds 10-9 to BJ. Take note also that though Fitch wound up on top both times during the first two rounds he was never able to 'advance' position as we call it in BJJ. He wound up in BJ's guard both times and never managed to pass. Though he landed some ground and pound while in BJ's guard most of his punches were effectively blocked by BJ.

I actually scored it 29-28 for BJ (the third round was a no-brainer of course). So for the people here crying foul thinking Fitch was robbed think again. The guy who ends up on top in an MMA fight doesn't necessarily make him the winner of a round/fight especially if you take the 'BJJ/grappling' aspect of it into consideration. I think the draw was the justified.

  9. I don't think that this is good news at all.. In my opinion there is less than 10% of the current UFC LHW roster that he can beat.. Especially with his current streaks..

Barndon Vera on the ground is like a fish out of the water.. Simply put, he has no ground game.. Werdum, Jones, and Silva exposed that..

I mean, I'm proud of him kasi Pinoy sya and everything, pero it's a pain to watch him fight lately..

Well Brandon has a ground game. He has a good one at that having won at Grappler's quest and having his BJJ Brown belt. I've seen it myself having been able to roll with him a couple of times when he was here preparing for Assuerio Silva back in '07 (or was it '06). The thing is the people he has been fighting as of late have been bad matches for him on the ground. Jones stifled his movement with his wrestling. Silva simply overpowered him and used that age-old adage that says "if you catch a a black belt with a punch once he becomes a brown belt, twice a purple belt and so on and so forth. And of course he was clearly overmatched size and skill wise against Fabricio Werdum. Dabbling in MMA requires that you make the most out of your skills. And yeah Brandon would have been better off using his wrestling/grappling in reverse ala Chuck Lidell using it to keep the fight standing where his most potent weapons (his leg kicks and his punches) shine.

  10. There's already a move within the local MMA community to the BI to have Jbarri deported. And GAB I hear is planning to have his professional fighters license permanently revoked. IMO matagal na dapat ginawa to this is not the first time the guy has acted inappropriately. Even way before he got into MMA he had a somewhat well publicized street fight with the current President of the Wrestling Association of the Philippines and former national coach Albert Balde. Coach Albert suplexed and kicked Razzi's ass of course.

  11. agreed. I honestly believe that someone with good wrestling and guard passing skills will give Silva a lot of trouble

Let us not forget that Travis Lutter nearly had Anderson Silva. He had him mounted during the first round. Had he not gone for that rather 'sloppy' arm bar I believe he could have won.

  12. he did great in the final Matt Hughes fight. but that was the past prime Matt Hughes.so, that was somehow irrelevant..

but he also made mistakes in the submission attempts he made to Dan Hardy, thats why the Brit didnt tap.so, his BJJ isnt that great at all..

Matt Hughes? Past his prime? Again I gotta strongly disagree. You cannot choke out another renowned BJJ Blackbelt like Ricardo 'Big Dog' Almeida with a simple 'head and arm control' if you're already past your prime. The position's not even a submission hold for crying out loud it's just a form of wrestling control. He missed a lil detail with the arm bar during the Hardy fight (your supposed to point your knees in like a vise and not out when executing a arm bar from the mount) but every other aspect of his BJJ in that fight was tremendous as expected. BJJ is not all about submissions it's about takedowns, it's about sweeps, reversals, passing and all the lil details that make it the technical art that it is.

Yeah he didn't tap Hardy but that's just part of the game. There are some people who are so resilient you can't tap them. Hardy was probably also trying to save face by not tapping out and giving in but he knew for sure he was clearly 'owned' on the ground.

Great fighters find a way to win. With Hardy,Alves and BJ GSP used his wrestling and his passing. With Koscheck he used his striking. With the more recent fights with Hughes he capitalized on what was supposed to be a Hughes specialty 'wrestling' that's an indication to me of just how great his skill in this particular aspect of MMA has become.

The thing with the Shields fight is this. If Shields cannot bring the fight to the ground with him ending up on top he has absolutely no chance of winning (unless we see another 'freak' KO like what happened in the Serra fight though that's got such a miniscule chance of happening ever again). If he pulls guard to try and bring it on the ground he'll be in trouble. And I just do not see him being able to take GSP down. Even Josh Koscheck who IMO has the best wrestling in the entire welterweight division was only able to keep GSP down for a few minutes and just one time during their last fight.

  13. Great BJJ tournament just this past weekend at Megamall by the way... The Philippine International Open 2011.

Thanks to all the International Teams who competed alongside us. Checkmat BJJ Borneo, Team Evolve MMA Singapore, Ole 'Baguio' Larsen and the rest of Tiger MMA Muay Thai, Kylin BJJ Hongkong, Team Machado Korea heck we even had some people from Team Quest in the USA and from France and Dubai come and roll. Congrats to all the competitors and the winners.

  14. what's the height of Serra??? isn't GSP greased in the BJ fight?? those are the only fighters with legit BJJ that GSP has fought..GSP has all the advantage on those fights..unlike in the fight with AS. Silva is all limbs, there is a chance he can catch GSP for a submission.. and dont tell me GSP has a good BJJ defense..he was already submitted by Hughes

The GSP who got submitted by Hughes during their first fight and the current GSP are "miles and miles" apart believe me. Did you see the transitions he did on Hughes during their third and final fight? Experienced grapplers would tell you just how impressive all that was. Hip-throw to a mounted triangle to a kimura to an armbar to a belly down arm bar with a wrist lock before finally forcing Hughes to verbally tap.

The thing is long limbs are not that difficult to negate when fighting from within the guard especially if you have a strong posture and your 'wary' of the wrist control (that was Sonnen's ultimate downfall... getting comfy with Silva's wrist control. It was like a trap he was just awaiting to spring right at the very end when it seemed Sonnen was poised to win the fight). GSP's fight intellect is like that of a sponge and knowing him if ever they meet in the octagon he probably won't get submitted the same way. He won't get submitted at all period.

The thing to consider to is that the Anderson Silva who got beat by Takase is again 'miles and miles' apart from the current Anderson Silva. You can't just go in there and try to beat the guy with heart and reckless abandon (as so many of these Jap fighters do). You need somebody as physically and technically superior as GSP (together with the heart and experience he has gotten from his losses) to beat the current Anderson Silva.

Tsk I can't believe people are still giving 'credence' to GSP being greased in the BJ fight. Give it up people. Heck BJ didn't even complain during the fight. He got beat fair and square by a bigger, stronger and better fighter that night.

Shields is so freakin 'one dimensional' (not to mention has horrible conditioning) he'll only end up like Demian Meia IMO. Doesn't matter how skilled you are if you got such awful cardio.

  15. it is a common knowledge that AS has a weak TDD defense.but looked wat he had done to them.submitting all of them..

we all know that Sonnen has a poor BJJ defense, but Hendo??? only been submitted 2x b4 the AS fight, both from the Nogs w/c are all bigger than him..

GSP has a 20%chance of winning the fight with Anderson..and that is by a boring decision only.and i doubt if he will accept that challenge.this would be like Pacquioa-Mayweather dream match that will never happen.he will make all the excuses not to fight AS..plus he need to pass Shields first..its his 1st tym dat he will fight a grappler like Jake..but i hope im wrong..so we could see the superfight between AS and GSP.

I think you're underestimating GSP way too much. 20 percent? really? Let me just remind you despite having submitted all his previous opponents who have managed to take him down more than anything the Sonnen fight exposed Anderson Silva. Styles make fights and GSP has the best takedowns in all of MMA. Getting Anderson down is already half of the puzzle. Stifling him and keeping him down will be the other half of it and given the fact that GSP has definitely a way way better BJJ pedigree compared to Sonnen (and the fact that he has already seen what had happened to Sonnen) he would definitely have a better chance of either grinding out a victory (it would still be a win nonetheless though 'boring' as some of you put it) or winning via GNP. IMO a grinder with a hard chin and excellent submission defense (e.g. Jon Fitch) can defeat Anderson Silva. One thing is for certain though a GSP gameplan against an Anderson Silva will involve taking him down. Styles make fights and I'm sure Greg Jackson

As for Shields with the kind of conditioning he showed against Kampmann I don't even think he belongs in the same octagon as GSP. Being a great grappler is one thing but being a great grappler in MMA is different. Being able to hang with a freak of an athlete such as GSP (who IMO is also the most physically gifted among all the fighters in the UFC) will be another thing Shields has to contend with. If you actually analyze logically if Shields can't take GSP down he has absolutely no chance of winning. And I simply do not see him being able to take GSP down.

We all admire Anderson Silva after the Belfort fight hands down he's proven he really is the best out there but lets not count out GSP if ever they do meet in the octagon. It'd be a heck of a fight.

  16. Hey guys. I read something quite interesting from one of the Yahoo Sports MMA links. Here's an excerpt from an article on Jason Reinhardt (http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news?slug=mmajunkie-Will_Ribeiro_UFC_127_Jason_Reinhardt_seeks_win).

"It was enough to propel him back into the good graces of the Zuffa brass; Reinhardt (201 MMA, 01 UFC was pegged to welcome Chinese import Zhang Tie Quan (10-0 MMA, 0-0 WEC) to the U.S. on the WEC 51 card this past September.

The proposed bout, however, simply was not meant to be.

Reinhardt failed a pre-fight medical exam conducted by the Colorado State Boxing Commission that halted the matchup in its tracks.

"They cancelled my fight at the last minute because they said my eyes were too bad," Reinhardt told MMAjunkie.com Radio. "I fought with my contacts (previously). I had a high prescription. I couldn't see very well without my contacts. Now I am seeing 20/15. I had the corrective-vision surgery."

It turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Post UFC-WEC merger, the same matchup with Quan again was given legs by management, only this time it will fall under the UFC banner. The pair finally squares off on the preliminary card of UFC 127, which takes place Feb. 27 in Sydney, Australia."

Zhang Tie Quan of course is very familiar to us in the local MMA scene. The Chinese fighter was the last guy to defeat URCC light heavyweight champion Caloy Baduria. I think him getting a fight in the UFC has some very positive implications for the fighters coming from Asia in general our fighters in the URCC included.

With Quan in the UFC this could possibly be 'the opening of the gates' so to speak that we have been waiting for. Our homegrown talents such as Angelito Manguray and Edward Folayang perhaps are finally set to get a chance to show their skills to the whole world inside what's been called the 'Ultimate Proving Ground' for fighters, the UFC Octagon.

  17. OK.tnx..

mala Rorion Gracie pla c Alvin Aguilar..promoter lng...but, checking his accomplishments in Wiki, mala Rickson Gracie din..almost good in everything..

but i hope he competes internationally in MMA, so we could more of him..

I also saw him compete in freestyle wrestling firsthand when we both tried out for the Philippine team last year around February. He's really good. He only lost in points to the incumbent Philippine team member of his weight class. I doubt he'll be competing in MMA anymore since he's already such an accomplished martial artist and is pretty content running his own promotion.

  18. I certainly hope GSP's last performance stops all the talk about him being safe and relying on what some people wanna call a lay and pray type approach (after taking people down). The man simply knows which one of his skills to impose on his opponent at the time. So much for not being able to stop Hardy or Alves (though he dominated them). He simply used his other skill set (which is his striking) to nearly stop perhaps the second best wrestler in the welterweight division. GSP ain't boring... He simply knows how to win. Add to that the fact that most of his opponents are really tough, top of the food chain welterweights. Some like Matt Hughes he has stopped some he hasn't... But he has dominated each and every time.

Dustin Hazlett looked lost against Bocek (who has really impressed me his last few fights) and Jim Miller I think should be next in line against the winner of the Edgar-Grady title fight.

  19. ang pangit ng TUF Finale.. puro, decisions..nkkaboring na tuloy yung UFC.. syang yung KO ni Garza, hnd pinalabas..im also expcting a submission from Maia, kxo i cant remember he even attempted one..but his control was excellent..

hope next week UFC wont be boring..but with GSP there, hmmm.. there's always a possibility... :P

Sigh. Asian brother can't get no love. =p Poor Nam Phan.

  20. ok din sa sprawl sa cubao..tutok talaga lalo na sa hybrid jiujitsu...coach art da best

ayos ah. may estudyante pala ni sir art dito. ^_^

Anyhoo. I don't see Bader being able to take Jon Jones down. With that being said striking may make the difference in the fight for Bader. On the other side of the card however I see Jon Jones possibly being able to take him down. I'm curious to see whether he'd be able to hurt him enough to stop the fight though Bader's certainly got toughness.

  21. aayawan lang ni Jon Jones si Harris kasi pagtapos ng laban nila ni Bader ayaw na daw muna nyang lumaban sa mga wrestlers

Hehe so you're picking Bader over Jon Jones bale? Well Bader's obviously got talent and he is quite skilled as a fighter but I just gotta say there is really something special with Jon 'Bones' Jones. I think he's got a 'GSP' esque type learning ability and the physical gifts to match.

  22. tnx, master..i will try enroll when i have the time.

4 months ago, i searched for a good bjj school here. and i saw the website of Team Fabricio, the resume of the head coach is pretty impressive.i called the branch in wack wack, a guy answered, kxo wlang kwenta kausap..di ko malaman kung "boy" ba nila yung nksagot. kya kinalimutan ko na..

naku malamang boy nga lang niya yun. Si coach stephen kasi unfortunately despite living here in the country for a decade already hindi pa din siya masyado nakakaintindi ng tagalog. hehe. I suggest talking to him in english if you ever decide to call him again or just visit this website for details on rates, venues and training schedules bjjphilippines.com. Hope to see you OTM one of these days.

  23. Yup I felt Machida was robbed but that's how it is when you leave it up to the judges. We'll all be surely awaiting the immediate rematch.

Phil Davis and Jon Jones are like clones. =p Jon Jones I think has a lot more fluidity in his strikes
