  1. Arum plans Pacquiao vs Valero in Macau

    By RONNIE NATHANIELSZ

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has said that WBA super featherweight champion Edwin Valero “is the next likely opponent” of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao. He, however, was quick to add that “no real negotiations with anybody have started yet.”

Arum was speaking to Viva Sports correspondent Romy Sajer during a break in the press and promotional tour stop in Chicago which was highlighted by a pep rally at the Federal Plaza downtown.

Even celebrated trainer Freddie Roach mentioned the possibility of a fight against Valero in the burgeoning gambling enclave of Macau which by all accounts has surpassed Las Vegas, with the fight likely to take place in October.

Sajer reported that Roach was “brutal, bold and confident” in contrast with Pacquiao and WBC lightweight champion David Diaz, who is a

Mexican-American and lives in Chicago who were both “cautious gentlemen and overly diplomatic.”

Asked about the weaknesses of Diaz, Roach replied, “If he gets hit, plain and simple. I mean anyone Manny Pacquiao can hit, I’m not afraid of.”

Reacting to Diaz’s trainer Jim Strickland’s statement that the champion would counter Pacquiao’s three-punch combinations with powerful four-punch combos, a stoic Roach said “after our three-punch combination Diaz may be thrown on the floor. If he wants to exchange with us, I have a better puncher for sure.”

Pacquiao, in an exclusive interview with Viva Sports and the Filipino community newspaper in Chicago, was soft-spoken and diplomatic. He said “speed and power” will determine the outcome of the fight. Pacquiao refused to predict the outcome but promised to “do my best to win the fight.”

Pacquiao conceded that Diaz “can punch ..pero nakikita ko so kaniya, mas mabilis ako siguro konti. Of course I believe na mas malakas pa ako kesa kaniya.”

Diaz was undaunted by the hoopla . Addressing the crowd of Mexican-Americans and Filipino-Americans at the Federal Plaza the champion said, “I know you all came to see me…but this guy (Manny) is pretty good.”

Diaz assured the fans: “We’re gonna bring the belt back. We’ve been in this situation before last year. Somebody (Erik Morales) was going for four (titles) again but not anymore.”

Exuding confidence Diaz, said a rematch with Pacquiao should be held in his hometown of Chicago, adding “after Chicago, then the Philippines.”

In a conversation with Chicago Sun Times reporter Roman Modrowski, the champion who is also a southpaw like Pacquiao predicted: “This is going to be an all-out war. Manny is a straight- forward fighter as am I. We are both going to go at it but the only thing that’s going to happen is I’m going to win.”

  2. Trainer tells Pacquiao: Don't be overconfident

    By RONNIE NATHANIELSZ

Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao’s childhood friend and trainer, Restituto “Buboy” Fernandez, cautioned him “not to be overconfident” in his WBC lightweight title fight against champion David Diaz on June 28 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

After a final workout in Mandaluyong City before leaving for Los Angeles, California last Monday, Fernandez told Viva Sports that Diaz was “strong and had a hammer-like blow that came from a distance."

Fernandez who said he had been studying the tapes of Diaz’ previous fights on his laptop every night said that the lightweight champ was “really strong and even if you drop him, he gets up.” He also warned that Pacquiao “must be careful because there’s a punch he (Diaz) throws that you don’t see.”

While admitting that Pacquiao, the WBC super featherweight champion, has a decided advantage in speed because Diaz is somewhat slow, Fernandez noted that “comparative slowness is combined with power and Manny must not allow him (Diaz) to feel confident.”

Fernandez said that Pacquiao would have no problem making the 135-pound lightweight limit and that even though he is moving up in weight, he will “carry his power with him.”

At the same time, Fernandez said that Pacquiao is a far more intelligent fighter today and that even in training, he “likes working out his own fight plan” and prefers a real war in the ring.

He said he is hoping that a nation’s prayers and good luck will smile on Pacquiao and he will become the first Asian to win four world titles. “That’s my prayer,” added Fernandez.

  3. Pacquiao set to face Diaz in June showdown of champions

LAS VEGAS, Nevada - World Boxing Council super featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao expects the toughest fight of his career June 28 when he moves up in weight to face WBC lightweight champion David Diaz.

The 29-year-old Philippine legend could complete a quest to capture five world titles in as many weight classes when he fights the 31-year-old American for the lightweight crown in a showdown of southpaws.

"This will be my hardest-fought battle," Pacquiao said. "It has been over three years since I have changed weight divisions and I will be doing it against the lightweight division's world champion.

"But this is my drive for five world titles in five different weight classes and I will not be denied. I am fighting for history, for destiny and for the people of the Philippines."

Diaz, 34-1-1 with 17 knockouts, makes the second defense of his title after taking a unanimous decision over Mexican star Erik Morales last August.

"I will shock the world and beat Pacquiao at his own game, power for power. He's a great champion but he's fighting in my division. I have worked too hard for this world title and I will not give it up to him."

Pacquiao, 46-3 with two drawn and 34 knockouts, plans on taking it anyway.

"I saw how he took the fight to Erik Morales in his last title defense and I am expecting to see the same fire power out of him when we meet," Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao won titles at flyweight, super bantamweight, featherweight and added super featherweight to that list in March with a split-decision victory over Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez.

Pacquiao avenged an earlier controversial draw against Marquez and added him to the list of vanquished top Mexican fighters, a group including Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Oscar Larios and Jorge Solis.

"Manny Pacquiao has beaten many great fighters, especially Mexicans. That's why they call him 'The Mexicutioner,'" Diaz said.

  4. Roach takes Ortiz as Pacquiao sparmate

Coach Freddie Roach is taking no chances as he sets a heavier sparring mate against Manny Pacquiao for the June 28 challenge against WBC lightweight champ David Diaz in Las Vegas, Nevada, an online news report said Tuesday.

FightFan.com said that Roach has enlisted the services of 140-lb Victor Ortiz as one of Pacquiao's sparmates.

Roach said that he believes Ortiz, touted as bigger and stronger than Diaz, will fit the bill in preparation for the WBC super featherweight king's ascent to the 135-lb division.

In addition to Ortiz, Roach said that former world champ Freddie Norwood may also be enlisted to do practice sessions with Pacquiao.

According to Roach, Pacquiao is set to arrive at the Wild Card gym in Hollywood, California for training on May 10.

At present, the "Pacman" is continuing training sessions in his native General Santos City in the Philippines.

Pacquiao's last fight on March 15 this year earned him the WBC super featherweight crown held by Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico.

  5. Pacquiao immortalized with postage stamp

Manny Pacquiao can now really say that he is an icon -- on and off the boxing ring.

Late last week, the Philippine Postal Service (Philpost) came up with a special issue stamp bearing depicting Pacquiao, the first athlete to be honored as such by the agency.

Philboxing.com reported that the Pacquiao stamp is the first in a series of special stamps of Filipino sports heroes. The series is under Philpost's "Kaya ng Pinoy" project.

It was learned that Pacquiao agreed to the Philpost proposal to help continue restoring "international respect for the Philippines through his amazing exploits in the ring."

According to Philpost chief and postmaster general Hector Villanueva, Pacquiao deserves the honor.

"[He] really deserves this because no other Filipino boxer has achieved what he accomplished. He's been a world champion for more than four years now and his feats are still growing," the official said.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, said that it is an honor for him to be featured in a stamp along with other great heroes in Philippine history.

Pacquiao's last fight was on March 15 when he grabbed the WBC super featherweight crown from Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez. The "Pacman" is next scheduled to clash with Mexican-American fighter David Diaz on June 28 for the WBC lightweight belt.

Meanwhile, aside from Pacquiao, other boxing heroes slated to be showcased in Philpost's "Kaya ng Pinoy" project are Hall-of-Famer Gabriel "Flash Elorde" and the Philippines' first world champion, Pancho Villa.

Philpost previously released a special issue stamp honoring the 25th anniversary of the Philippine Basketball Association, Asia's first professional league.

  6. Ginebra pins revival hopes on new import

The Ginebra Gin Kings will try to score their first win this tournament as they go up against a similarly struggling Purefoods TJ Giants Friday night in the ongoing elimination round of the Smart-PBA Fiesta Conference.

The Gin Kings will be parading their third import this conference in Chris Alexander, a seven-foot-one 260-lb Iowa State College alumnus who played for Sioux Falls in the National Basketball Developmental League (NBDL) where he averaged 11.6 points, 11.2 rebounds and two blocks during the 2007-08 season.

Alexander, who arrived on Tuesday, will be replacing the ineffective seven-foot Ernest Brown, who constantly faded down the stretch in all his three-game stint with Ginebra.

“He works very hard and is in good shape. I think we now have a much better chance of getting our first win tomorrow,” said newly acquired Ginebra guard Junthy Valenzuela.

In playing for Sky Force in the just-concluded NBDL season, Alexander wreaked havoc to the opposition from February 19 up to their last regular season game as he posted 11 double-double performances in points and rebounds in a span of 17 games. In that stretch, the Sky Force won 10 games in clinching their fourth-straight playoff appearance eventually won by the Idaho Stampedes.

Ginebra’s woes continued on April 20 after losing their fifth game of the conference by bowing to Magnolia, 95-92. In that game, however, opposing coach Siot Tanquincen commented about the Gin Kings’ still potent lineup.

“Ginebra’s record at the moment doesn’t show the real strength of the team. Nagkakapaan pa sila with their new recruits but, eventually, I believe, they would be a top contender,” said Tanquincen, who won two championships as head coach of Ginebra.

Purefoods’ campaign in the ongoing season started to go awry after they dropped a 110-103 loss to then-winless Welcoat Dragons. Previous to that, the Giants lost a close 98-96 squeaker to the streaking Red Bull on April 16.

Reports came out that Purefoods is set to replace Darius Rice with former San Miguel import Chris Burgess, who is currently playing for TTNet Beykoz in the Turkish Basketball League.

But Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio told the BusinessMirror he will still use Rice for Friday night’s game.

“I’m worried with the way we’re playing defense. We are allowing 107 points per game, that is why we are at the bottom half,” said Gregorio. “My focus is how to get better first on defense. If we get better, then the wins will come after.”

Meantime, the Alaska Aces and Air21 will try to inch closer to the upper half of the team standings as the two teams meet in the 4:40 p.m. encounter.

The Aces and Express are tied at the lower half with identical 2-3 win-loss slate.

“Aggressive defense will be our battle cry for tomorrow’s game. We also have to continue improving our numbers,” said Express coach Bo Perasol.

Both Alaska and Air21 are coming off losses, with the Express suffering a dubious distinction of being the team inundated by a record 23 three-pointers set by Talk ‘N Text as the Pals drubbed the Bert Lina franchise, 116-99 last April 22 at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Alaska on the other dropped a close 100-97 overtime loss to Red Bull in an out of town game last April 19 at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena in Laoag City.

The Aces will miss the services of import Randy Holcomb, suspended for one game after being assessed a Flagrant Foul-Penalty One for hitting a driving Rich Alvarez during the dying seconds in regulation of their game in Laoag.

  7. Biggest first-day sales of Pacquiao fight set

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said that over 7,000 tickets at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel & Casino were sold last Saturday for Manny Pacquiao’s WBC lightweight title fight against defending champion David Diaz in June.

"The box office people report the tremendous demand for tickets was the biggest first-day sale for a Manny Pacquiao fight ever, and they had to limit sales to eight tickets per customer," Arum was quoted as saying by Philboxing.com.

Arum said they will hold a formal press conference announcing the fight on May 3 in Los Angeles.

"I didn’t want to hold it earlier because I didn’t want Manny to go through the inconvenience of coming to the United States for the press conference, flying back to the Philippines and then coming back for training." He said.

Pacquiao will go straight to training at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach shortly after the press conference.

    Diaz an ‘unusual fighter’

Even as he described Pacquiao as "faster than Diaz and has a lot more skills", Arum said that Diaz is "a very unusual fighter."

"He is very rugged, he is very, very determined," Arum said, "Diaz has a chin like iron, and it’s impossible to win over him by knockout."

Arum predicted that Diaz would not hesitate to go toe-to-toe with the Filipino.

"Unless Manny is in unbelievably great shape, he won't be able to go twelve rounds," he said.

Arum described Diaz as "one of those over-achieving fighters who will stay to the bitter end", and more often than not, pull off a victory.

  8. I suggest you make sure that the company really drops the case. Follow-up with the company the execution of the "Affidavit of Desistance". Accompany the company representative when he subscribes to his affidavit before the prosecutor. Obtain receipts of your payments or better still a certificate of full payment. Better to be safe than sorry. The case will not appear with the NBI. The Prosecutor's Office normally does not furnish a copy of the complaint with the NBI. If I am not mistaken, it is only when a case is actually filed in court that the NBI is informed of the case.

Sir i just receive the resolution from the Office of the City Prosecutor dismissing our case and further said that the complainant once the case is dismissed or withdrawn the complainant can no longer re-file or revive the same thank so much for your legal expertise mlpf
