thegame08
Ang daming room dito sa sports thread about basketball teams, simulan mo sa Ginebra, SMB, Air21, etc. at meron ding room the PBA dito pero sa football isa lang so I guess it;s high time that we create a room for these guys. blow_gobi
I'm planning to watch the game on July 3 but I was surprised they're selling the tickets at P3,000 ringside P2,000 box, tapos P300/P200 grandstand/general admission. Sana huwag masyadong papalit palit para merong stability yung line-up. BTW, Jason de Jong is coming back pala but was relegated to the U-23 line-up, and will play only for the team for the Southeast Asian games, not the World Cup qualifying team. Quote Link to comment
carlogambino
buti nagkaroon na rin ng sariling room ang football ... to be precise .. azkals philippines football ! kudos !! malakas ata yung seniors lineup especially pag tuloy sina lucena, schrock, cagara, and guirado. no choice but to get the european pinoys for the short term as they have better training and skills. in the future dapat ma train na rin local players starting sa grass roots. but observe around you, wala pa rin kumilos itigil na yang utak basketball. internationally, dapat mag admit na there's a glass ceiling na di kayang sirain sa basketball. hard to say, but hanggang dyan na lang yan. in football, there's a lot of room to grow especially now when you're starting sa bottom. kaya support the azkals !! pati si micheal weiss ehh kinda irritated na sa dami ng distractions and endorsements of some of the players. buti nagkaroon na rin ng sariling room ang football ... to be precise .. azkals philippines football ! kudos !! malakas ata yung seniors lineup especially pag tuloy sina lucena, schrock, cagara, and guirado. no choice but to get the european pinoys for the short term as they have better training and skills. in the future dapat ma train na rin local players starting sa grass roots. but observe around you, wala pa rin kumilos itigil na yang utak basketball. internationally, dapat mag admit na there's a glass ceiling na di kayang sirain sa basketball. hard to say, but hanggang dyan na lang yan. in football, there's a lot of room to grow especially now when you're starting sa bottom. kaya support the azkals !! pati si micheal weiss ehh kinda irritated na sa dami ng distractions and endorsements of some of the players. blow_gobi
In fairness naman sa basketball, we're the world's #75 team while in football we're only #153. We have the best basketball team in the ASEAN and probably among the Top 20 within Asia; our football standing in ASEAN is still question mark today (although it could start to improve), and we're only #32 in Asia (I think). Kaya lang, football has probably a better potential for PHL as an international sport: (1) there's room for improvement for the Azkals and I'm sure with sustained support the Azkals will continue to do so; (2) it is the world's most popular team sport, and its a joy to watch the game if the players are skillful and the venue/football field is of good quality, kahit pipitsugin lang na liga like the AFC Challenge Cup, etc. (3) haven't you noticed that there's a bumper crop of talented Fil-Foreigners playing in football clubs in Europe and in America, while there's practically no Fil-Foreigner playing in high-profile US/European basketball leagues (buti pa China and Iran, may NBA players na)? This is a revelation as to where our international competitive strength lies. Edited May 25, 2011 by blow_gobi Quote Link to comment

thegame08
I read this article around circa 1987, the article is about "The Dawn" the legendary Pinoy band, vocalist Jet Pangan said in the particular article na ang "rock parang football sikat sa buong mundo pero pagdating sa Pinas wala", well, rock music has taken off since that time sa dami ng magagaling na rock bands na sumikat but it seems that na ngayon pa lang sumisikta sumisikat or rather naa-appreciate ng mga sports fans ang football sa Pinas, though meron na talagang mga Pinoys na mahilig o avid fans ng larong ito. xxxxdgnr8xxxx
i know we're pals since we both root for the same MLB team, and we were so ecstatic when they finally won their 27th World Series title 2 years ago. but i vehemently disagree with your last statement. we all know how humiliating that was when our little leaguers got stripped of that prestigious World Series crown 18 years ago. it was an embarassment on a world-wide scale, and i somehow condone what al mendoza did when he "ratted* us with our prestige and glory. but that's all in the past. and we have learned from this mistake, and to quote the little league philippines district administrator, jolly gomez "we may not win all the time, but now we always play by the rules, which, for us, is more important." slowly, baseball in the Philippines is picking up its pace and has been active, hence the formation of our own baseball league. and just months ago, the future hall of famer ken griffin, jr paid us a visit (i was disappointed when i learned late about it), and was very much impressed with the talents displayed by our little kids. and coming from junior, that says a lot! check the facts first, man! just another headsup, our philippine baseball team is #23 in the world-ranking, way way much better than the smart-gilas team and the glorified azkals. so if we want to achieve that prestige and glory, concentrate more on where we really excel in, and that is baseball. even though we fielded over-age players back in 1992, still we beat the americans at their own game. and i firmly believe that we can do it again. hindi pa patay ang baseball sa pilipinas, pre! buhay na buhay 'to! forget baseball in the philippines. after the little league scandal, patay na ang baseball sa pinas. blow_gobi
Despite Tim Lincecum's rise, baseball's popularity hasn't risen as much as what the azkals did for football in PH. Maybe if a PH baseball team is successful in a major Asian tournament, the sport will generate more attention. Personally though, I'd prefer NBA and NFL to Major League Baseball, parang nababagalan ako sa pace ng baseball. But that's just me.Para hindi OT: What's interesting about the rise in futbol in PH today is that the fan base is coming from the masa. Presumably, the poor identify themselves with the azkals and their ginebra-style never-say-die success. One good thing about this also is the potential of having a broader grassroots for developing homegrown talent. Quote Link to comment
jopoc
^^^^ there is the masa who can relate to the name Askals, and who are being fed with the news thanks to the intensive media coverage. there are the coños who are friends and those who relate with the fil-foreign poster boys who grew up and were trained abroad there are the girls who find the poster boys the object of their fantasies. great combination to make team popular.
