practical ba yung paggamit ng mala-Ilizarov na orthoses na ikakabit sa tibia pampatangkad?

The Ilizarov frame is not an orthosis. It is an external fixation device that is attached directly to the bone by thin tensioned wires. It has been used already for limb-lengthening procedures here in our country to address shortened limbs due to various ailments. Unfortunately, I think you would be hard-put trying to convince the specialists (there are only quite a few in the country - all of them orthopedic surgeons, the pioneer here in the Philippines and the one with the most experience being Dr. Javier who is connected with PGH, Capitol, & Cardinal) to do it for for cosmetic reasons. This is a topic that has been discussed in various orthopedic conferences and I have never heard anyone of the surgeons trained in the Ilizarov method agree to do a cosmetic limb lengthening procedure to increase height. As for the practicality, it is very bulky and the patient has to turn the nuts on a schedule (usually 1 mm every 6 hours every day) to increase the length.

May nakita po ako sa BUY-TV, gadget sya that requires self adjustment, parang bench press na may pang ipit sa paa at ulo, pag inikot mo yung adjustment, hihilain ka nya and it stretches your spine. Good daw sya for cervical compressions and for growth. Totoo po kaya ito?
kaso parang 14,000 yata ang presyo

that's the ilizarov fixator...it entails putting pins through the femur and tibia then doing a corticotomy (a controlled fracture) then afterwards, the bones will be distracted at an average rate of 1mm per day until the desired length is achieved...this is the principle of distraction osteogenesis wherein the bone fragments are slowly pulled apart while allowing the bone to heal and "make new bone"...but as hintoflime stated in an earlier post, i'm not sure if you will be able to find a specialist who would do this for cosmetic reasons.

this procedure is not a walk in the park. the patient has to deal with a bulky external frame for weeks to months. the procedure may also have grave consequences if complications arise such as osteomyelitis (infection of the bone). so, a lot of orthopedic surgeons, if not all, would think twice on doing this procedure without a "real" indication for it.

let me just add that there are a few case reports of doing this for dwarfs although it remains controversial in the field of orthopedics.

well in fact...by the time one reaches 18...on stops or nearly stops growing taller.....what happens is that the bone ossifies...which means that the long bones sticks together to resist one from growing taller...instead people grow wider then...which is up to 25 in average individual.....growth balls and the like are not gonna do much...in fact the more we secrete the so called growth hormone and if that goes way too much....even after age of 25 or so....one is going to have a condition called acromegaly....a condition which the body grows wider, the internal organs grow bigger and the face changes too.....
we will now owe the future of growing taller with the help of research......hopefully one good scientist will come up of a safe way to make you guys taller in the future...... :)

Can the long bones be unlocked/un-ossify temporarily for it to grow again naturally then re-stick it again? That is one theory that scientist may consider in their research.

(Di rin kasi ako matangkad, hehe)

that's the concept of DISTRACTION OSTEOGENESIS...literally, it new bone formation with distraction.

as what was said in the earlier posts, the long bones (Femur, Tibia) are literally broken/fractured and then slowly pulled apart (around 1 mm per day). This very slow process allows the fracture site to form a regenerate (new bone) thus allowing lengthening. After distraction osteogenesis and after achieving the desired length, the REGENERATE is then allowed to harden like any other fracture before the ILIZAROV FIXATOR is removed.

Hope this sheds some light into the topic...

there's no harm in trying....but then again......naniniwala pa rin ba kayo sa mga commercials ????

Sorry Napoleons but there is no way to increase your physical height once you are matured.
The only medical way I know to increase height in Children is via and operation to lengthen the bones of the legs which is complex, dangerous and painful.
Its only done in extreme cases in the USA.

The knowledge and technology is available in our country - limb lengthening via the surgical principles of distraction osteogenesis by the methods of Ilizarov, that is. There are orthopedic surgeons here who are trained in the technique and who apply it to their patients regularly. It is usually done on patients who need limb lengthening for whatever functional reason - an accidnt involving bone loss, infection, or congenitally deformed extremities. The only thing is, one who will want it done for cosmetic reasons only may be hard pressed to convince the surgeon to do it since the few orthopedic surgeons for ethical reasons.
