Reviving or doing covers of one song or two is fine. But reviving and doing covers all the time each time the album is released is "deceiving and unhealthy". Check out this article from Manila Bulletin, Dec 3, 2006.

Do tribute albums weaken OPM?

By YUGEL LOSORATA

When the Eraserheads’ tribute package was released into the market and merited commercial success last year, a fad was born and everyone seems to be cashing on it. In no time albums of its kind flooded the record bars, selling like hotcakes… so hot record companies have been releasing one tribute album after another.

Because of this ‘phenomenon,’ some quarters seem to have started questioning this bandwagon, casting doubt on the viability of sending an avalanche of tribute albums in record stores. At least to some critics, bombarding the airwaves with revivals of the past hits is no good for the OPM cause since it generally sidelines the growth of pop music through new materials.

Instead, the current trend bends the bough as more CDs depend on tunes already popularized decades ago, with almost every album in town loaded at least one or two revival tracks.

A music man of high stature, who requested anonymity, thinks of this scenario as deceiving and unhealthy. It is deceiving considering that it somewhat hides a sense of truth that songwriting nowadays fair poorly if compared to those during the Manila Sound days or even at the early stages of the 90s bandwave. It is unhealthy the fact that it displays Pinoys’ fondness in patronizing a particular fad and relying on an unoriginal idea.

As of now, the number of tribute albums has increased evidently, and they come in various fashions, too. The "Ultraelectromagneticjam" Eraserheads’ tribute and "Kami nAPO Muna" homage on APO Hiking Society made use of the surging bandmania to meet their purpose. Filipino bands dominating the charts these days have recorded their renditions of the biggest hits from the Ely Buendia–led and Jim Paredes–bannered groups, respectively.

The newly born ASAP Records gathered the stars of ABS–CBN’s Sunday noon show to pay tribute to Manila Sound pioneer Hotdog and Megastar Sharon Cuneta. The big difference is that the albums banked on the voices of solo and TV stars and not band vocalists.

As for the tribute on VST & Co. and Cinderella, the re-recording of their classic were given the Bossa Nova feel, thus, catching the tribute fad and the genre-of-the-moment in tight embrace.

With the releases mentioned above, it shows that four major record labels took part in the said fad which only proves that this is a big trend that have been defining the local music of today.

Prior to this tribute album trend, acts like Nina and MYMP have established their reputation of being topnotch revivalists, which to some is a spank on the art of originality and creativity. Now, almost all mainstream acts have at least a number pulled out from OPM’s old catalogues. Even upcoming acts who proudly display their skill at producing original songs have resigned themselves to the idea that reviving is the key to surviving in the music biz today. For some, this kind of musical ambience isn’t worthy of being described as flourishing.

And it may be getting worst. Before, only songs get revived. Now, tribute albums revive an entire familiar musical history of certain artists given interpretations from newer ones. Old songs, new artists. Is today’s OPM becoming too trifling artists fall short when it comes making originals that will eventually become classics for generations ahead?

Record experts actually think that the difficult life situation of Pinoys contributed to the success of revivals over originals. Already–familiar tunes easily set in into the consciousness of the listeners and that’s good for people who don’t have time to closely listen to a song because of other more significant tasks to take care of.

Well, the points said are expected to arise since critics will always be around to question matters. They may be of negative nature, but the point is, all of this, in a nutshell, is only the flipside of a good song.

Record producer Snaffu Rigor doesn’t see any problem on the tribute mania. He noted that the trend is good for local music and for the artists being paid respect to. He said, "As a producer, the tribute concept is good because it sells. While as a songwriter myself, I believe that this is a chance for the younger generation to realize and understand why those songs from APO and VST are certified classics. I think these people deserve the recognition for what they’ve done to OPM. The streak of tribute CDs is a testament of their brilliance."

Rigor is a bonafide pillar of OPM, as a multiawarded songwriter and producer. He wrote the Metropop winning piece "Bulag, Pipi, At Bingi" and the Rico J. Puno’s defining song "Macho Gwapito." The fad’s paying tribute to him as well since he played and wrote for Cinderella, composing the signature hit "T.L Ako Sa’yo."

Asked why tribute albums are such a hit, APO’s Jim Paredes explained, "The original materials have the following and quality to start with. Bringing them up to stle with the new audience is a sure fire formula for success."

If there something that the newer acts should be proud, it’s their ability to give justice to the songs they’re interpreting. Paredes significantly praised how he liked some of the bands’ rendition of APO hits. "They made the songs their own," he noted.

Thoughts on this tribute–album formula/trick may vary in tones and nature. But the good news is that, OPM is that star of the occasion with this around. If this would continue for long, chances are the foreign records will have to wait for their turn before they become the baby of Pinoy listeners.

Assuming na law student ka, the best book on ObliCon is...

The book being used by your prof in making exams, and where he draws questions for recitation in class. Para naman maganda ang grade mo sa recitation (kung wala namang weight sa prof mo ang recitation, di yung librong ginagamit niya para sa exams). Note that some profs announce what book will be the reference during the sem but they use the examples/illustrations from a different book for exams (what a dirty trick!). Kung sarili niyang exam questions, malas mo! (Get old exams from upperclassmen na lang)

For other purposes, as stated by Dr. Pepper, Paras is easy to read, while Tolentino exhaustively discusses the topic. Kumbaga sa encyclopedia, si Paras ay Colliers habang si Tolentino ay Encyclopedia Brittanica.

I syuggest you use the book preferred by your prof, then, when it comes to provisions that you have difficulty in understanding, read Paras together with the book you are using.

this coincides

Although my reply is quite late but I just want to thank you for your suggestions. :D BTW, my prof initially told us that he recommends Caguioa which is obviously out of circulation. But we knew all along that he was bluffing and instead after a series of questions during our recitations, we discovered he uses a combination of TOlentino and Jurado. Mga style talaga ng prof.
