No. For good or for bad, Life has dozens of Olympics, arriving at irregular times, ready or not, many you did not even plan for. You win, you win for today, only. You lose, and you must overcome today to fight again tomorrow, or next year.

As managers, we are stewards of the company's capital. And we are guided by the owner's (shareholders) wishes on what to do with the company assets and capital.

 

But what if the shareholders want nothing but quarterly profits? Short terms "kills" and "big kahuna?" While long term we are making the mistakes that will land us in a deep financial hole one fine day - all Nokia, RIM, BP - fantastic quarterly profits for years, even decades, and then gone, destroyed, in days? Killed by Apple and partner's mistakes.

 

As managers we have little choice but to accede to such wishes. And it becomes difficult to work well, knowing you are working for the next doomed dodo of a company, the next Enron, the next Bear Sterns.

 

I will not work for a short-term company. That is like working for a congressman who only worries the next 4 years.

 

Unless they pay 5x what I get today. Then even if they go broke next year - I've got them juiced already.

I'm also usually apathetic, cold, and emotionally distant. I do pretty well in the IQ department, and most my decisions are based on cold, calculating, cruel logic.
