No Bataan Day here, in this country where the Brits lost badly to the Japs, and had to wait for the Americans to win the Pacific war for them.

 

But why do we celebrate defeats such as Bataan? I would celebrate instead the signing of the peace treaty at Tokyo bay, on the quarterdeck of the battleship USS Missouri, when the treacherous Jap empire finally crumbled in defeat under the might of the Americans and their allies.

 

For no defeat no matter how glorious ever equalled a victory no matter how plain.
