THE BUZZ: Robert Zemeckis is guiding director Gil Kenan's debut, and the producer is using the same motion-capture technology he employed for The Polar Express last year. Who is Gil Kenan? He graduated from UCLA's film school and bowled people over (including his mentor here) with a short entitled The Lark. We love the concept here, the design, and, of course, the cast. This looks to be the family film to beat this summer ... more so than even Cars? THE BUZZ: From white belts and AC/DC tees, to Joan Jett haircuts and slim-fit jeans, 80s nostalgia will be just about dead by the time this once-hot summer blockbuster rolls into town. Will it stop Crockett and Tubbs from making bank? Nah. I mean, if S.W.A.T. can make over a hundred million, Vice should have no problem turning a profit, even though no one seems interested in promoting it. Vice's s success, good, bad, or otherwise, will definitely influence development on the other TV-to-film projects out there; Dallas is nearing production, and Knight Rider and Magnum P.I. are still beating. But this still doesn't answer the question of why Michael Mann didn't just create his own, new police drama with this cast, and miles away from the Vice brand. P.S. Pictures The Plot: After Lucas Nickle floods an ant colony with his watergun, he's shrunken down to insect size and sentenced to hard labor in the ruins. THE BUZZ: Director John A. Davis came out of nowhere several years back with Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, one of the first hits for the pact between Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount. With Davis's sense of humor and a stellar voice cast (Julia Roberts is a total score, as she only has two films coming out this year - both voice roles) should help steady Warner's shaky year. The Mandarin is one of the world's greatest scientific geniuses who is seeking world domination. Although The Mandarin has no superhuman powers, he is a superb athlete with tremendous skill in the various martial arts. For weapons, he uses ten rings he wears on his fingers that respond to his mental commands. Marvel Studios has set a May 2, 2008 release date for Iron Man.
