The Hobbit:

Guillermo del Toro appeared as a guest on Simon Mayo's BBC Radio Show yesterday (via TheOneRing.net) and talked a bit about The Hobbit. He did confirm that at least three big actors would return - Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Hugo Weaving as Elrond, and Andy Serkis as Gollum. Along with the casting news, del Toro revealed the following nuggets:

 

[The] film will take some liberties with sub-plot material that is briefly discussed in the book. Most notably among this, is Gandalf’s departure from Bilbo and the Dwarves to confer with The White Council in Dol Guldur on dealing with an entity called the Necromancer (which later turns out to be Sauron himself.) We’ve always suspected this based on some statements, but this time, the intention to document Gandalf’s quest (which is not covered greatly in the book) was articulated clearly.

 

Smaug the Dragon, del Toro revealed that after eight whole months of design work, they have only just “cracked the basic engineering.” It is anticipated that another six or seven months of application will be needed before the great flying, fire-breathing, gold smuggler will be in any kind of presentable form.

 

 

 

Mission Impossible 4:

J.J. Abrams, the man behind “Lost,” “Fringe” and the latest Star Trek smash is reteaming with Tom Cruise to resurrect superspy Ethan Hunt for a fourth installment of the popular franchise. “I am incredibly honored that Tom has invited me back as a producer on Mission Impossible 4,” says J.J. Abrams, who directed 2006’s MI: 3, but hasn’t yet committed to directing the fourth. “Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing.”

 

 

 

Bond 23:

In a press release today producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions Ltd and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures announced that Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen), Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (Quantum of Solace, Casino Royale) will be the screenwriters of the 23rd James Bond adventure. Daniel Craig, obviously, is set to return as the British super-spy, but a director and date for the start of production is yet to be announced.

 

As for story, last December Craig was asked about the direction the next film would take and if it would serve as a third film in a trilogy that began with Casino Royale. Craig told Collider.com, “We’ve finished this story as far as I’m concerned. We’ve got a great set of bad guys. There is an organization that we can use whenever we want to. The relationship between Bond and M is secure and Felix is secure. Let’s try and find where Moneypenny came from and where Q comes from. Let’s do all that and have some fun with it.”

 

 

 

Shutter Island:

The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Patricia Clarkson and Max von Sydow and is based on teh Dennis Lehane novel of the same name. The film tells the story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the coast of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island’s fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane.duction, with part one of the two-film feature set to be released in December 2011.

Conan (remake):

Marcus Nispel has been set by Nu Image/Millennium Films to direct "Conan," ending a nine-year development ordeal to reinvent the Robert E. Howard-created barbarian first immortalized onscreen by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1982.

 

Production on the remake is set to start late this year in Bulgaria and South Africa. Nu Image/Millennium is making the film in a co-production with Lionsgate. Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta are producing with Fredrick Malmberg. Malmberg runs Paradox, the company that holds the rights to "Conan" and the other hero franchises in the Howard library.

 

 

 

The Time Traveler’s Wife:

An adaptation of the Audrey Niffenegger novel, the movie stars Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana and follows the ups and downs of their relationship as he struggles with an glitch in his DNA that causes him to jump back and forth in time.

Gulliver's Travels:

Chris O'Dowd has been cast in the Fox comedy "Gulliver's Travels." The actor joins Jack Black, Jason Segel, Amanda Peet and Emily Blunt in the big-budget adaptation of the classic Jonathan Swift story. The modern version is about the adventures of travel writer Lemuel Gulliver, who while on a Bermuda Triangle assignment gets sidetracked to the secret island of Lilliput. O'Dowd will play Edward, Black's Lilliputian nemesis.

 

 

 

John Carter of Mars:

Walt Disney Pictures has set "Wolverine" stars Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins to star in "John Carter of Mars," a fantasy epic that marks the live action directorial debut of "Wall-E" helmer Andrew Stanton. itsch, a member of the "Friday Night Lights" ensemble who made his screen breakthrough as Gambit in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," will play the title character, a damaged Civil War veteran who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars where his involvements with warring raced of the dying planet force him to rediscover his humanity. Collins will play Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Mars. Collins worked with Kitsch in "Wolverine," playing Hugh Jackman's character's love interest Kayla Silverfox. She also co-stars in the HBO vampire drama "True Blood."

 

 

 

Predators (remake):

According to reports, Neil Marshall, British helmer of Dog Soldiers, The Descent and Doomsday, is apparently in talks to direct the remake of Predators. Marshall is apparently in negotiations to direct the film, from a script by Robert Rodriguez. There's still no word as to whether Predators will be a sequel, a prequel, or a reboot, but being that Marshall knows a thing or two about horror, expect lots of gore.

 

 

 

Beautiful Girl:

Screen Gems prevailed in a spec auction for "Beautiful Girl," a scary genre thriller from a most unlikely source: Michael Cunningham, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "The Hours." Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher are producing through their Red Wagon banner.

 

Story concerns a shy but brainy high school girl who returns for senior year after having slimmed down six dress sizes. She finds herself flirting with the handsome English lit teacher, but the mutual crush turns deadly when the teacher's obsession with the student compels him to exact maniacal revenge on everyone who was cruel to her.

 

 

 

Something Wicked:

Brittany Murphy has joined the psychological thriller "Something Wicked". The story follows a teenager and his girlfriend, who is way out of his league, whose lives are thrown into chaos when her parents are killed. Darin Scott will direct the feature which also stars. Joe Colleran is producing and wrote the script from a story by Joseph Mungra.

 

 

 

Deadworld:

Dark Hero Studios is planning a zombie feature film franchise adaptation of Gary Reed's comic book "Deadworld". "Deadworld" veers from the popular zombie mythology of depicting an apocalypse in which humans are overrun by flesh-eating corpses. "Deadworld" picks up four months after that event, where the Dead overtake the Earth, with humans few and far between. The protagonist is King Zombie, a Harley-riding corpse who holds a grudge against the survivors who made him an outcast.

The first teaser trailer for the highly anticipated Avatar Movie from M. Night Shyamalan "The Last Airbender" starring Noah Ringer, Dev Patel, and Cliff Curtis is now available online.

 

Based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon animated TV series, the live-action feature film is set in a world where human civilization is divided into four nations: Water, Earth, Air and Fire.

 

The Fire Nation is waging a ruthless, oppressive war against the other three nations. The film's hero, the reluctant young Aang (Noah Ringer), is the "Last Airbender" -- the Avatar who, according to prophecy, has the ability to manipulate all of the elements and bring all the nations together. Insiders:

Jessica Alba and Robert Rodriguez have teamed to option Jean-Claude Bartoll's French spy thriller comic book series "Insiders". The multi-volume story revolves around Najah Cruz, a Columbian operative working for the White House who must infiltrate and help bring down a corporate-backed international crime syndicate. The action cuts across various countries including Chechnya, Afghanistan, Russia and China.

 

 

 

Dorian Gray:

"The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" hunk Ben Barnes stars as Oscar Wilde's infamous immortal protagonist in the new major feature film adaptation of "Dorian Gray". 'Gray' tells the story of a strikingly beautiful young man named Dorian (Ben Barnes). He arrives in Victorian London and is swept into a social whirlwind by the charismatic Henry Wotton (Colin Firth), who introduces Dorian to the hedonistic pleasures of the city. When a portrait of Dorian is unveiled, such is its beauty that he makes a pledge: he would give anything to stay as he is in the picture - even his soul. "Dorian Gray" examines the destructive power of beauty, the blind pursuit of pleasure and the darkness that can result.

 

 

 

The Zookeeper:

Adam Sandler, Cher, Jon Favreau, Sylvester Stallone and Judd Apatow will provide voices for the animals in the live-action comedy "The Zookeeper" for MGM Films. The film centers on zoo animals trying to teach the keeper their methods of dating and mating to help him win back the woman of his dreams. Sandler will voice a capuchin monkey, Cher's voicing a giraffe, Favreau a bear, Stallone a lion and Apatow an elephant. Kevin James, Rosario Dawson, Jim Breuer, Faizon Love and Bas Rutten also star.

 

 

 

Red Dawn (remake):

MGM’s Red Dawn remake appears to actually be happening as Josh Peck and Adrianne Palicki have joined Chris Hemsworth in the film to be directed by first timer Dan Bradley. The script was written by Carl Ellsworth and Jeremy Passmore whose work is limited although Ellsworth has recently co-written a couple of recent horror/thrillers including the awful The Last House on he Left remake and Disturbia. This remake is based on the John Milius-directed 1984 original, which was set during the dawn of World War III and followed a group of mid-western America teenagers as they band together to defend their town, and their country, from invading Soviet forces.

 

The remake will follow a similar plot thread telling the story of a group of teenagers who form an impromptu insurgency when their town is invaded by Chinese and Russian soldiers. Peck — most recently seen in The Wackness — will play Matt Eckert, the hotheaded younger brother of Hemsworth’s Jed Eckert and star quarterback of their Spokane high school football team. Palicki will play Toni, a tough fighter the brothers encounter who develops romantic feelings for Jed, a Marine home on leave and the group’s unofficial leader.
