Lara Croft 3:

Lara Croft could soon be going on a new big-screen mission. Warners Bros. and producer Dan Lin are in early development on a a reboot of "Tomb Raider," the popular video game action franchise. "Tomb Raider," which was published in 1996 by a London-based video game company called Eidos, was a wildly popular game that involved the daredevil archaeologist Lara Croft on a series of global missions. Several spinoff games have been published since, with a 10th-anniversary edition of the game released in 2006. include a rival reporter, a bellowing editor and an American Interpol inspector.

 

 

 

Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

"The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" will be setting sail from a new port. The third installment of Walden's "Chronicles of Narnia" franchise, which was let go by Disney last month, is landing at Fox 2000, which will develop it with an eye to release the movie in the holiday season of 2010. Many of the key players are expected to stay with the project, including director Michael Apted and actor Ben Barnes, though a new writer might come aboard. Elizabeth Gabler will oversee for the studio. The third film faces creative as well as budgetary challenges. Although the C.S. Lewis book has quests, dragons and sea monsters galore, the story also has been criticized for lacking a clear antagonist.

 

 

 

The A-Team: The Movie

Fox's big-screen version of "A-Team" looks to be finally coming together. Joe Carnahan is in negotiations to helm the action movie with Ridley and Tony Scott's shingle Scott Free coming on board as producers. Stephen J. Cannell, who co-created the show, is also producing. The trek to bring "A-Team" to the big screen has been a long one, with various actors, directors and writers landing on it before springing off of it. John Singleton was last attached, but ultimately left after casting issues stalled the project.

 

 

 

Rango:

Isla Fisher has signed to provide voice work for Rango to be directed by Gore Verbinski for Paramount Pictures. The animated flick features the vocal stylings of Johnny Depp as a household pet who goes on an adventure to discover his true self. Fisher joins a cast that also includes Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Ray Winstone, Harry Dean Stanton and Ned Beatty.

 

 

 

The Graveyard Book:

Neil Jordan will write and direct the feature adaptation of Neil Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book," the young people's novel that received the Newbery Award. "The Graveyard Book" is the story of an orphan raised by ghosts in a cemetery. Gaiman announced Jordan's involvement while on "The Today Show," where he was promoting the release of Focus Features' animated feature "Coraline," which Henry Selick adapted from Gaiman's work. Gaiman will produce "The Graveyard Book," which will be shot as a live-action feature. London-based f/x production house Framestore will work on the effects.

 

 

 

Centurion:

Michael Fassbender, Dominic West and Bond girl Olga Kurylenko are girding their loins for Neil Marshall's Britain-set sword-and-sandals thriller "Centurion," for "Slumdog Millionaire" producer Christian Colson of Celador Films. The movie, billed as a thriller set during the Roman invasion of Britain in A.D. 117, tells the story of Quintus Dias, sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, who marches north with General Virilus' legendary Ninth Legion, under orders to wipe the Picts from the face of the Earth and destroy their leader, Gorlacon.

 

 

 

The Thing (remake):

In the screenplay by Ronald D. Moore, the prequel takes place from the Norwegian camps point of view. An American scientific expedition to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic is interrupted by a group of seemingly mad Norwegians pursuing and shooting a dog. The helicopter pursuing the dog crashes leaving no explanation for the chase. During the night, the dog mutates and attacks other dogs in the cage and members of the team that investigate. The team soon realize that an alien life-form with the ability to take over bodies is on the loose and they don’t know who may already have been taken over.

 

 

 

Afterburn:

Matt Johnson (Torque, Into the Blue) has been tapped to adapt the comic book Afterburn for Relativity Media. The film is being produced by Neal Moritz's Original Films and Toby Maguire's Maguire Entertainment banner. "Afterburn," a sci-fi adventure based on books published by Red 5 Comics, is set against the backdrop of a postapocalyptic Earth whose Eastern Hemisphere was destroyed by a massive solar flare, leaving what life remains mutated from radiation and fallout. The story revolves around a group of treasure hunters who extract such objects as the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone and the Crown Jewels while facing rival hunters, mutants and pirates.

Lara Croft Reboots Without Angelina

Angelina Jolie's loss may just be Megan Fox's gain.

 

Warner Bros. has confirmed plans to relaunch—and completely overhaul—the hot-pants-wearing, artifact-collecting Lara Croft: Tomb Raider franchise, with the first major casualty being Jolie.

 

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the third film will completely reboot the video-game-based character, including changing her origin story (most likely shying away from her English aristocracy roots), and introduce new kinds of missions, love interests and villains.

 

And, most notably, a new leading lady.

 

While producers say an actress likely won't be cast until a writer and director have signed on, Fox has emerged as the frontrunner replacement, at least as far as the blogosphere is concerned.

 

While Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its inconsistently punctuated sequel, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, were produced by Paramount, the rights to the series have since reverted back to video game purveyor Eidos. In December, Time Warner increased its stake in the multimedia company, ensuring in-house studio Warner Bros. first dibs to what has been a lucrative, albeit critically panned, franchise.

 

The first installment, released in 2001, grossed $275 million worldwide, while the 2003 sequel earned $157 million. All told, the video game series, which launched in 1996, has accounted for more than $1 billion.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe:

Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver are breathing new life into a planned "He-Man" movie, hiring John Stevenson direct Masters of the Universe. The story revolves around a prince (Prince Adam) who transforms into a warrior (He-Man) and becomes the last hope for a magical land being ravaged by the evil Skeletor.

 

 

 

Puss in Boots:

Tom Wheeler will pen the "Shrek" feature film spinoff "Puss in Boots" for DreamWorks Animation. The feline assassin/swordsman Puss in Boots character, originally hired to knock off the grumpy green ogre, debuted in "Shrek 2" and became part of Shrek's entourage. Antonio Banderas voiced the character in the second, third and upcoming fourth "Shrek" feature. "Shrek the Third" co-director/co-writer Chris Miller penned an earlier draft of the "Puss" screenplay. Michelle Raimo is producing.

 

 

 

Gulliver's Travels:

Emily Blunt and Jason Segel are in negotiations to star with Jack Black in Gulliver's Travels for Twentieth Century Fox. The movie, a "reimagining" of the classic Jonathan Swift tale, casts Black as a travel writer named Lemuel Gulliver who takes an assignment to the Bermuda Triangle and washes up on the island of Lilliput, where he's a giant among the tiny population. Blunt will play a Lilliputian princess and Black's love interest. Segel will play Horatio, Gulliver's best friend from Lilliput who helps rescue Gulliver when he's captured. Rob Letterman will direct.

 

 

 

Hyperion Cantos:

Scott Derrickson ("The Day the Earth Stood Still," "The Exorcism of Emily Rose") is set to direct "Hyperion Cantos" for Warner Bros. and GK Films. Trevor Sands ("Inside") is penning the script which will blend Dan Simmons two sci-fi novels - "Hyperion" and "The Fall of Hyperion" into one film. The story is set in the distant future, as a space war threatens Hyperion, a planet known for the Time Tombs -- large artifacts that can move through time and are guarded by a gruesome monster called the Shrike.

 

 

 

The Resident:

effrey Dean Morgan will star opposite Hilary Swank in "The Resident," a thriller Antti J. Jokinen is directing for Hammer Films. The story centers on a young doctor (Swank) who moves into a loft in Brooklyn where mysterious occurrences lead her to suspect that she is not alone in her home. She discovers that her seemingly charming landlord (Morgan) has developed a dangerous obsession with her, resulting in a terrifying game of cat and mouse.

 

 

 

Angelology:

Sony Pictures Entertainmen has bought the film rights to "Angelology," a first novel by Danielle Trussoni that sold this week to Viking. The project will be a co-production between Will Smith and James Lassiter's Overbrook and Marc Forster, the Quantum of Solace director who will produce through his Apparatus banner. The story is described as a cross between The Da Vinci Code and National Treasure. Trussoni is definitely writing one sequel book, and possibly two. Angelology revolves around a 23-year old nun, who teams with an angelologist named Verlaine as they race to thwart a group that tries to corral the destructive powers of a race of angel/human hybrids called Nephilim. Their goal is to destroy mankind. Verlaine starts out working for the bad guys--who then tried to k*ll him--before he teamed with Sister Evangeline in a search for ancient artifacts that are the only things that can stop the Nephilim.

Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.

 

 

 

King Lear:

Al Pacino will play the title role in "King Lear," an adaptation of the Shakespeare play that will be directed by Michael Radford. Radford, who wrote the script, is making his second Shakespearean foray with Pacino after their 2004 collaboration "Merchant of Venice," which cast Pacino as Shylock. Pic will be produced by Barry Navidi, who teamed with Pacino on "Merchant" as well as the upcoming "Salomaybe?," which Pacino directed and stars in. That film, based on the Oscar Wilde play, is in post-production.

 

 

 

The Last Airbender:

"Slumdog Millionaire" star Dev Patel has joined the cast of M. Night Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender," the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Films live-actioner based on a Nick TV series. Patel will be featured alongside newcomer Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone and Jessica Jade Andres. Production begins in mid-March in Greenland.

 

Tyro thesp Ringer will play Aang, the film's lead, who is the last of a race of people who can manipulate the elements of air. Ringer, a 12-year-old from Texas, landed the part after demonstrating his martial arts skills in an Internet vid that he posted to a website Shyamalan set up for open virtual auditions.

 

Patel will play Zuko, a member of the Fire Nation. Peltz plays the Water Tribe rep Katara, while Andres is the Earth Kingdom's representative, Suki.

 

 

 

The Ward:

John Carpenter is back in the directorial saddle again. Carpenter will direct The Ward for independent distributor Echo Lake. The film will be Carpenter's first directorial effort since 2001's John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars. Amber Heard will star in the film, which will revolve around her character being haunted in a mental institution. Doug Mankoff, Andy Spaulding and Mike Marcus are producing for Echo Lake.

Three Stooges:

According to rumors, for their upcoming "Three Stooges" project, you can't blame the Farrelly Brothers for aiming high. The filmmakers are seeking both Johnny Depp and Sean Penn for their upcoming remake/anthology film.

 

"They want Johnny to play Moe and Sean Penn will be Larry - they're still looking to cast Curly" an insider apparently told the paper.

 

 

 

Green Lantern:

Martin Campbell, who has twice reinvented the James Bond franchise with 1995's "Goldeneye" and 2006's "Casino Royale", is in negotiations to direct the "Green Lantern" film for Warner Bros. Pictures. The attachment of such an in-demand action director has moved the DC Comics hero adaptation into a much higher priority window at the studio, cementing the project's place as a major 2010 or 2011 tentpole for the studio.

 

 

 

Master Mind:

Robert Downey Jr., Tina Fey and Ben Stiller are in negotiations to lead the voice cast for DreamWorks Animation's superhero lark "Master Mind." Stiller is also a producer on the movie through his Red Hour Films. The satiric film, with a screenplay by Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, concerns a brilliant superhero villain who loses his life's purpose when he accidentally kills his good-guy nemesis. DWA plans a Nov. 5, 2010 release (though the title might change).

 

 

 

Rum Diary:

Amber Heard is in negotiations to play the coveted female lead opposite Johnny Depp in "Rum Diary," the adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel, which Bruce Robinson is writing and directing. Heard is a relative newcomer who so far has been cast in supporting roles in more modest movies. Her notable roles include the title character in "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane" and a stint as Seth Rogen's high school-aged girlfriend in "Pineapple Express." "Diary" will place Heard at the front and center of a love triangle in the tale of a washed-up, hard-drinking journalist named Paul Kemp (Depp) in 1950s Puerto Rico. Heard will play Chenault, the free-spirited girlfriend of a fellow journalist who cheats on him with Kemp, trying to convince him to run away with her.

 

 

 

The Cross:

According to the trades, Orlando Bloom, Vincent Cassel ("Eastern Promises") and Olga Kurylenko ("Quantum of Solace") will topline "The Cross," to be directed by Andrew Niccol ("Lord of War" ). Niccol has initiated pre-production on the $24 million sci-fi escape story, which is scheduled to start principal photography in July in Australia. Set in a border town, "Cross" returns Niccol -- Oscar-nommed for writing "The Truman Show" -- to his favorite domain: the near future. Bloom plays a man seeking to cross a mysterious border, something no one else has achieved; Cassel limns the guard who will go to any lengths to foil him. Kurylenko takes the femme lede.

 

 

 

Dear Mr. Gacy:

"Monster" producer Clark Peterson is tracking down another serial killer. Peterson will produce "Dear Mr. Gacy," based on the real-life story of Jason Moss, a college student who became obsessed with notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy. William Forsythe ("The Rock," "88 Minutes") will play Gacy, while Jesse Moss, who stars in Paramount's current release "The Uninvited," will play the role of Jason Moss. European director Svetozar Ristovski ("Mirage") will make his English-language debut with the feature, directing from a script by Kellie Madison. Gordon Yang is also producing, while Tom Berry and Madison are exec producing.

 

The project is based on the memoir "The Last Victim" by Jason Moss, who began corresponding with Gacy in 1994, the last year of the killer's life. Moss eventually met Gacy on Death Row and even narrowly escaped an attack by him. The twentysomething went on to gain a measure of celebrity from his interactions with Gacy, but his story ended tragically when he committed suicide in 2006. His book has been described by critics as a real-life "Silence of the Lambs."

 

 

 

Beastly:

CBS Films is moving forward on supernatural high-school tale "Beastly," bringing on Daniel Barnz to helm and write the picture. Based on Alex Flinn's young-adult novel of the same name, the high school fable centers on a popular but arrogant teenage boy who is turned into a monster by a witch in his class and must find true love to break the curse. Producers are seeking a young heartthrob to play the lead role. Susan Cartsonis will produce, and Roz Wesiberg will co-produce. Maria Faillace will oversee for CBS Films.

Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game

Steven Soderbergh is in talks to direct Sony Pictures adaptation of Michael Lewis' book "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game". The book focuses on Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics who used a sophisticated computer analysis system to piece together a team that regularly contended for the World Series despite a payroll dramatically lower than such big-market rivals as the New York Yankees. Brad Pitt has been circling the project for a year. Around the same time Steve Zaillian signed on to adapt the book after original scripter Stan Chervin left the project.

 

 

 

The Baster:

Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman are teaming for the romantic comedy "The Baster," which Mandate Pictures will shoot in the spring in New York. Will Speck and Josh Gordon, who co-directed 2007's "Blades of Glory," will direct the feature, which screenwriter Allan Loeb ("21") has adapted from a short story by Jeffrey Eugenides that was published in the New Yorker. Bateman and Aniston will play best friends Wally and Kassie. When Wally learns that Kassie plans to become pregnant through artificial insemination, he replaces the donor's semen with his own and must live with the secret that he is the father of her child.

 

 

 

The Ghost:

Timothy Hutton has joined the cast of Roman Polanski's "The Ghost." The film, which begins shooting this week in Berlin, tells the tale of a ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) who is hired to complete the memoirs of a former British prime minister (Pierce Brosnan). When he uncovers secrets, his own life is put in jeopardy. Hutton plays the role of the prime minister's American lawyer. Tom Wilkinson, James Belushi and Kim Cattrall also are in the cast.

Youngblood:

Brett Ratner has signed on to direct Youngblood, an adaption of Rob Liefeld's iconic graphic novel for the Indian media conglomerate, Reliance Big Entertainment, which just acquired rights to the novel. Reliance inked a development deal with Ratner's shingle Rat Entertainment, as well as Julia Roberts' Red Om Films, during the Berlin film fest. The company paid mid six figures for the rights to Youngblood, about a superhero team sanctioned and overseen by the U.S. government.

 

 

 

Guardians of Ga'Hoole:

Jim Sturgess, Geoffrey Rush, Rachael Taylor, and David Wenham have joined the voice cast of animated project "Guardians of Ga'Hoole" for Village Roadshow and Animal Logic. Zack Snyder (300) is directing the film, currently shooting in Australia. Warner Bros. is distributing. NBC's Chuck, Zachary Levi, has joined the Alvin and the Chipmunks squeakquel! Zachary Levi, star of the NBC action comedy series "Chuck," has been cast opposite the computer-generated singing rodents of "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel." Levi will play the cousin of Jason Lee's character and gets tangled up with the tiny animated threesome. Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney again will provide the chipmunks' voices. Also new to the franchise will be the Chipmunks' rivals, the Chipettes -- Brittany, Jeanette and Eleanor -- who were introduced in the 1980s animated TV series

 

 

 

Rum Diary:

Aaron Eckhart is in negotiations and Richard Jenkins is signed on to join Johnny Depp in the drama "Rum Diary". An adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel, the story follows a washed-up, hard-drinking journalist named Paul Kemp (Depp) in 1950s Puerto Rico. Eckhart would play Sanderson, a wealthy landowner who believes everything has a price and introduces Kemp to a different standard of living. The pair are soon caught up in a love triangle with a beautiful young woman (Amber Heard). Jenkins is playing Lotterman, the man who oversees the rundown newspaper where Kemp works. Bruce Robinson adapted and is directing. Depp, Christi Dembrowski and Graham King are producing, Filming begins March 30th in Puerto Rico.

Plot Summary:

Johnny Depp is returning as Captain Jack Sparrow in a untitled third sequel in the popular "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.

 

No word if any other cast or if director Gore Verbinski are returning - it seems unlikely Depp would return without Verbinski and Geoffrey Rush would seem to be an no-brainer. "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" teased audiences with Sparrow and Barbossa both in hot pursuit of the Fountain of Youth!

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen

AC Toys has unveiled two new toy images that reveal the likeness of both The Fallen and Devastator from the summer blockbuster Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, which is set for release on June 26.

The Matarese Circle:

Tom Cruise is getting ready to partner with Denzel Washington in "The Matarese Circle," the David Cronenberg-directed adaptation of the Robert Ludlum thriller for MGM. Cruise will go mano a mano with Washington as two bitter enemy spies who, after spending two decades trying to k*ll each other, grudgingly team up against the Matarese, a powerful group at the root of a conspiracy. The script by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas ("Wanted") contemporizes Ludlum’s original Cold War premise. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Nick Wechsler will produce with Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith’s newly formed Captivate Entertainment. Henry Morrison is exec producer.

 

 

 

Jonah Hex:

John Malkovich will square off against Josh Brolin in "Jonah Hex," the Warner Bros. adaptation of the DC Comics property that begins production in April. Legendary Pictures has joined the project as co-financier and co-producer. Malkovich will play Turnbull, a wealthy Southern plantation owner whose son is killed by Union soldiers during the Civil War. He blames Hex, a former confederate soldier-turned-hardened bounty hunter and gunslinger. Jimmy Hayward ("Horton Hears a Who") is directing the script by "Crank" scribes Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Mad Chance's Andrew Lazar is producing with Weed Road's Akiva Goldsman.

 

 

 

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo

"20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo" has a new navigator. While the captain remains director McG ("Terminator: Salvation"), screenwriter Justin Marks has been brought on to rewrite Bill Marsilii's draft script for Disney's big-budget underwater adventure. Sean Bailey is producing through his Idealogy Inc., along with McG. Jeanne Allgood is executive producing.

 

Marks has been hired as a "world builder" to fill out the deep-sea universe in this action-adventure based on the 1954 film "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," which was an adaptation of Jules Verne's classic novel. As the new "Leagues" moves toward preproduction, Marks has four weeks to work with McG and craft designers to expand the film's world to the scale of a tentpole extravaganza. Marks, repped by WMA and Madhouse Entertainment, wrote the screenplay for the Fox actioner "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li," due Feb. 27 in domestic theaters. He also has "Hack/Slash," "Masters of the Universe" and "Voltron" in development.

 

 

 

The Ghouly Boys:

Freshman screenwriter Sam Esmail has been hired to adapt children's comic "The Ghouly Boys" for Mandate Pictures. Lindsay Doran ("Nanny McPhee") is producing through her Three Strange Angels shingle. J.C. Spink, Chris Bender and Jake Weiner of Benderspink and Mandate president Nathan Kahane will serve as executive producers. Mary Lee will oversee the project for Mandate. In 2006, Mandate picked up film rights to the spooky and comical graphic-novel series about a quartet of young monster outcasts and their efforts to fit in. Written and drawn by the single-named artist Christopher (Higginson), "Ghouly" was published in 2004 by Slave Labor Graphics.

 

 

 

Nightmare on Elm Street (remake):

Samuel Bayer will direct the planned "reimagining" of Nightmare of Elm Street for New Line Cinema and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes. The news comes just a couple of days before the release of the new Friday the 13th -- also courtesy of Platinum Dunes. The original "Nightmare", released in 1984, followed a group of teens who were haunted in their dreams by the finger-knived Freddy Kreuger.

 

Robert Englund starred as "Freddy", Heather Langenkamp played the film's female lead and Johnny Depp appeared in his big screen debut. The movie spawned several sequels. Freddy was last in theaters in 2003 in Freddy vs. Jason. Bayer is best-known for his commercial and music video work. His credits include Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Blind Melon's video for "No Rain".
