In a dynamic new portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous characters, Sherlock Holmes sends Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his stalwart partner Watson (Jude Law) on their latest challenge. Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.

 

 

 

King Lear:

Al Pacino will play the title role in "King Lear," an adaptation of the Shakespeare play that will be directed by Michael Radford. Radford, who wrote the script, is making his second Shakespearean foray with Pacino after their 2004 collaboration "Merchant of Venice," which cast Pacino as Shylock. Pic will be produced by Barry Navidi, who teamed with Pacino on "Merchant" as well as the upcoming "Salomaybe?," which Pacino directed and stars in. That film, based on the Oscar Wilde play, is in post-production.

 

 

 

The Last Airbender:

"Slumdog Millionaire" star Dev Patel has joined the cast of M. Night Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender," the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Films live-actioner based on a Nick TV series. Patel will be featured alongside newcomer Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone and Jessica Jade Andres. Production begins in mid-March in Greenland.

 

Tyro thesp Ringer will play Aang, the film's lead, who is the last of a race of people who can manipulate the elements of air. Ringer, a 12-year-old from Texas, landed the part after demonstrating his martial arts skills in an Internet vid that he posted to a website Shyamalan set up for open virtual auditions.

 

Patel will play Zuko, a member of the Fire Nation. Peltz plays the Water Tribe rep Katara, while Andres is the Earth Kingdom's representative, Suki.

 

 

 

The Ward:

John Carpenter is back in the directorial saddle again. Carpenter will direct The Ward for independent distributor Echo Lake. The film will be Carpenter's first directorial effort since 2001's John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars. Amber Heard will star in the film, which will revolve around her character being haunted in a mental institution. Doug Mankoff, Andy Spaulding and Mike Marcus are producing for Echo Lake.

Three Stooges:

According to rumors, for their upcoming "Three Stooges" project, you can't blame the Farrelly Brothers for aiming high. The filmmakers are seeking both Johnny Depp and Sean Penn for their upcoming remake/anthology film.

 

"They want Johnny to play Moe and Sean Penn will be Larry - they're still looking to cast Curly" an insider apparently told the paper.

 

 

 

Green Lantern:

Martin Campbell, who has twice reinvented the James Bond franchise with 1995's "Goldeneye" and 2006's "Casino Royale", is in negotiations to direct the "Green Lantern" film for Warner Bros. Pictures. The attachment of such an in-demand action director has moved the DC Comics hero adaptation into a much higher priority window at the studio, cementing the project's place as a major 2010 or 2011 tentpole for the studio.

 

 

 

Master Mind:

Robert Downey Jr., Tina Fey and Ben Stiller are in negotiations to lead the voice cast for DreamWorks Animation's superhero lark "Master Mind." Stiller is also a producer on the movie through his Red Hour Films. The satiric film, with a screenplay by Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, concerns a brilliant superhero villain who loses his life's purpose when he accidentally kills his good-guy nemesis. DWA plans a Nov. 5, 2010 release (though the title might change).

 

 

 

Rum Diary:

Amber Heard is in negotiations to play the coveted female lead opposite Johnny Depp in "Rum Diary," the adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel, which Bruce Robinson is writing and directing. Heard is a relative newcomer who so far has been cast in supporting roles in more modest movies. Her notable roles include the title character in "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane" and a stint as Seth Rogen's high school-aged girlfriend in "Pineapple Express." "Diary" will place Heard at the front and center of a love triangle in the tale of a washed-up, hard-drinking journalist named Paul Kemp (Depp) in 1950s Puerto Rico. Heard will play Chenault, the free-spirited girlfriend of a fellow journalist who cheats on him with Kemp, trying to convince him to run away with her.

 

 

 

The Cross:

According to the trades, Orlando Bloom, Vincent Cassel ("Eastern Promises") and Olga Kurylenko ("Quantum of Solace") will topline "The Cross," to be directed by Andrew Niccol ("Lord of War" ). Niccol has initiated pre-production on the $24 million sci-fi escape story, which is scheduled to start principal photography in July in Australia. Set in a border town, "Cross" returns Niccol -- Oscar-nommed for writing "The Truman Show" -- to his favorite domain: the near future. Bloom plays a man seeking to cross a mysterious border, something no one else has achieved; Cassel limns the guard who will go to any lengths to foil him. Kurylenko takes the femme lede.

 

 

 

Dear Mr. Gacy:

"Monster" producer Clark Peterson is tracking down another serial killer. Peterson will produce "Dear Mr. Gacy," based on the real-life story of Jason Moss, a college student who became obsessed with notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy. William Forsythe ("The Rock," "88 Minutes") will play Gacy, while Jesse Moss, who stars in Paramount's current release "The Uninvited," will play the role of Jason Moss. European director Svetozar Ristovski ("Mirage") will make his English-language debut with the feature, directing from a script by Kellie Madison. Gordon Yang is also producing, while Tom Berry and Madison are exec producing.

 

The project is based on the memoir "The Last Victim" by Jason Moss, who began corresponding with Gacy in 1994, the last year of the killer's life. Moss eventually met Gacy on Death Row and even narrowly escaped an attack by him. The twentysomething went on to gain a measure of celebrity from his interactions with Gacy, but his story ended tragically when he committed suicide in 2006. His book has been described by critics as a real-life "Silence of the Lambs."

 

 

 

Beastly:

CBS Films is moving forward on supernatural high-school tale "Beastly," bringing on Daniel Barnz to helm and write the picture. Based on Alex Flinn's young-adult novel of the same name, the high school fable centers on a popular but arrogant teenage boy who is turned into a monster by a witch in his class and must find true love to break the curse. Producers are seeking a young heartthrob to play the lead role. Susan Cartsonis will produce, and Roz Wesiberg will co-produce. Maria Faillace will oversee for CBS Films.

Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game

Steven Soderbergh is in talks to direct Sony Pictures adaptation of Michael Lewis' book "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game". The book focuses on Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics who used a sophisticated computer analysis system to piece together a team that regularly contended for the World Series despite a payroll dramatically lower than such big-market rivals as the New York Yankees. Brad Pitt has been circling the project for a year. Around the same time Steve Zaillian signed on to adapt the book after original scripter Stan Chervin left the project.

 

 

 

The Baster:

Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman are teaming for the romantic comedy "The Baster," which Mandate Pictures will shoot in the spring in New York. Will Speck and Josh Gordon, who co-directed 2007's "Blades of Glory," will direct the feature, which screenwriter Allan Loeb ("21") has adapted from a short story by Jeffrey Eugenides that was published in the New Yorker. Bateman and Aniston will play best friends Wally and Kassie. When Wally learns that Kassie plans to become pregnant through artificial insemination, he replaces the donor's semen with his own and must live with the secret that he is the father of her child.

 

 

 

The Ghost:

Timothy Hutton has joined the cast of Roman Polanski's "The Ghost." The film, which begins shooting this week in Berlin, tells the tale of a ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) who is hired to complete the memoirs of a former British prime minister (Pierce Brosnan). When he uncovers secrets, his own life is put in jeopardy. Hutton plays the role of the prime minister's American lawyer. Tom Wilkinson, James Belushi and Kim Cattrall also are in the cast.

Youngblood:

Brett Ratner has signed on to direct Youngblood, an adaption of Rob Liefeld's iconic graphic novel for the Indian media conglomerate, Reliance Big Entertainment, which just acquired rights to the novel. Reliance inked a development deal with Ratner's shingle Rat Entertainment, as well as Julia Roberts' Red Om Films, during the Berlin film fest. The company paid mid six figures for the rights to Youngblood, about a superhero team sanctioned and overseen by the U.S. government.

 

 

 

Guardians of Ga'Hoole:

Jim Sturgess, Geoffrey Rush, Rachael Taylor, and David Wenham have joined the voice cast of animated project "Guardians of Ga'Hoole" for Village Roadshow and Animal Logic. Zack Snyder (300) is directing the film, currently shooting in Australia. Warner Bros. is distributing. NBC's Chuck, Zachary Levi, has joined the Alvin and the Chipmunks squeakquel! Zachary Levi, star of the NBC action comedy series "Chuck," has been cast opposite the computer-generated singing rodents of "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel." Levi will play the cousin of Jason Lee's character and gets tangled up with the tiny animated threesome. Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney again will provide the chipmunks' voices. Also new to the franchise will be the Chipmunks' rivals, the Chipettes -- Brittany, Jeanette and Eleanor -- who were introduced in the 1980s animated TV series

Thompson novel, the story follows a washed-up, hard-drinking journalist named Paul Kemp (Depp) in 1950s Puerto Rico. Eckhart would play Sanderson, a wealthy landowner who believes everything has a price and introduces Kemp to a different standard of living. The pair are soon caught up in a love triangle with a beautiful young woman (Amber Heard). Jenkins is playing Lotterman, the man who oversees the rundown newspaper where Kemp works. Bruce Robinson adapted and is directing. Depp, Christi Dembrowski and Graham King are producing, Filming begins March 30th in Puerto Rico.

Plot Summary:

Johnny Depp is returning as Captain Jack Sparrow in a untitled third sequel in the popular "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.

 

No word if any other cast or if director Gore Verbinski are returning - it seems unlikely Depp would return without Verbinski and Geoffrey Rush would seem to be an no-brainer. Tom Cruise is getting ready to partner with Denzel Washington in "The Matarese Circle," the David Cronenberg-directed adaptation of the Robert Ludlum thriller for MGM. Cruise will go mano a mano with Washington as two bitter enemy spies who, after spending two decades trying to k*ll each other, grudgingly team up against the Matarese, a powerful group at the root of a conspiracy. The script by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas ("Wanted") contemporizes Ludlum’s original Cold War premise. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Nick Wechsler will produce with Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith’s newly formed Captivate Entertainment. Henry Morrison is exec producer.

 

 

 

Jonah Hex:

John Malkovich will square off against Josh Brolin in "Jonah Hex," the Warner Bros. adaptation of the DC Comics property that begins production in April. Legendary Pictures has joined the project as co-financier and co-producer. Malkovich will play Turnbull, a wealthy Southern plantation owner whose son is killed by Union soldiers during the Civil War. He blames Hex, a former confederate soldier-turned-hardened bounty hunter and gunslinger. Jimmy Hayward ("Horton Hears a Who") is directing the script by "Crank" scribes Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Mad Chance's Andrew Lazar is producing with Weed Road's Akiva Goldsman.

 

 

 

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo

"20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo" has a new navigator. While the captain remains director McG ("Terminator: Salvation"), screenwriter Justin Marks has been brought on to rewrite Bill Marsilii's draft script for Disney's big-budget underwater adventure. Sean Bailey is producing through his Idealogy Inc., along with McG. Jeanne Allgood is executive producing.

 

Marks has been hired as a "world builder" to fill out the deep-sea universe in this action-adventure based on the 1954 film "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," which was an adaptation of Jules Verne's classic novel. As the new "Leagues" moves toward preproduction, Marks has four weeks to work with McG and craft designers to expand the film's world to the scale of a tentpole extravaganza. Marks, repped by WMA and Madhouse Entertainment, wrote the screenplay for the Fox actioner "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li," due Feb. 27 in domestic theaters. He also has "Hack/Slash," "Masters of the Universe" and "Voltron" in development.

 

 

 

The Ghouly Boys:

Freshman screenwriter Sam Esmail has been hired to adapt children's comic "The Ghouly Boys" for Mandate Pictures. Lindsay Doran ("Nanny McPhee") is producing through her Three Strange Angels shingle. J.C. Spink, Chris Bender and Jake Weiner of Benderspink and Mandate president Nathan Kahane will serve as executive producers. Mary Lee will oversee the project for Mandate. In 2006, Mandate picked up film rights to the spooky and comical graphic-novel series about a quartet of young monster outcasts and their efforts to fit in. Written and drawn by the single-named artist Christopher (Higginson), "Ghouly" was published in 2004 by Slave Labor Graphics.

 

 

 

Nightmare on Elm Street (remake):

Samuel Bayer will direct the planned "reimagining" of Nightmare of Elm Street for New Line Cinema and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes. The news comes just a couple of days before the release of the new Friday the 13th -- also courtesy of Platinum Dunes. The original "Nightmare", released in 1984, followed a group of teens who were haunted in their dreams by the finger-knived Freddy Kreuger.

 

Robert Englund starred as "Freddy", Heather Langenkamp played the film's female lead and Johnny Depp appeared in his big screen debut. The movie spawned several sequels. Freddy was last in theaters in 2003 in Freddy vs. Jason. Bayer is best-known for his commercial and music video work. His credits include Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Blind Melon's video for "No Rain".

Iron Man 2:

Rumor has it that Scarlett Johansson is in discussions with Marvel Studios to replace Emily Blunt for the role of Russian superspy Natasha Romanoff, who doubles as Black Widow, in Iron Man 2. Blunt's commitment to 20th Century Fox and the studio's upcoming Gulliver's Travels may prohibit her from co-starring in the superhero sequel. Marvel will not confirm, but sources tell EW that Johansson has indeed met with the filmmakers and is interested in taking the role.

The Hardy Men:

"Men in Black" writer Ed Solomon has been hired to take a crack at "The Hardy Men," a comic riff on the classic young-adult mystery novels about two brothers who solve crimes. Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise remain lined up to star, with "Night at the Museum" helmer Shawn Levy attached to direct. Stiller and Stuart Cornfield of Red Hour Films are producing with Bob Kosberg. Levy also is producing through his 21 Laps banner. The Hardy Boys adventures revolved around the mystery-solving efforts of teenagers Frank and Joe Hardy, amateur detectives who often helped their father, a private investigator. The film adaptation would explore the reunion of the estranged, grown-up brothers, who work together to solve a new mystery. The Fox 2000 comedy has been on many writers' laptops during its 10-plus years in development, most recently that of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" screenwriter Simon Kinberg.

 

 

 

Crowley:

Keri Russell has signed to star alongside Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford in the Tom Vaughan-helmed Crowley project for CBS Films. The drama, which starts lensing April 6, will be the first film to go into production for the new company. Russell will play Aileen Crowley, a mother who tries to build a normal home life for her sick children while her husband, John (Fraser), and an unconventional scientist (Ford) race against time to find a cure. Robert Nelson Jacobs ("The Water Horse") penned the screenplay, which was inspired by a Wall Street Journal article and subsequent book, "The Cure," by Geeta Anand. Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher are producing alongside Carla Shamberg. Ford is exec producing.

 

 

 

The Adventurer's Handbook:

Universal Pictures has acquired "Superbad" actor Jonah Hill's comedy script "The Adventurer's Handbook". Taking inspiration from the book by Mick Conefrey, the story follows a quartet of pals go on a global adventure, inspired by the hardcore stories of explorers whose tales are chronicled in Conefrey's book. Hill co-wrote the script with Matt Spicer and Max Winkler while Akiva Schaffer ("Hot Rod") is in negotiations to direct. Hill and Jason Schwartzman will star.

 

 

 

The Zookeeper:

Kevin James, fresh from "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," will star in the title role in MGM's "The Zookeeper" for director Frank Coraci. In a reteam of "Blart" producers, Happy Madison's producing with James and Jeff Sussman through their Hey Eddie shingle and Todd Garner through his Broken Road banner. "Zookeeper," penned by Jay Scherick and David Ronn, centers on a lonely zookeeper who decides to leave his job because he can't meet a girl, leading to intervention by the zoo's animals.

Robin Hood:

In a chat with MTV, Director Ridley Scott said that Russell Crowe will not be playing the dual roles of Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham, as had long been reported, but rather just the legendary outlaw of Sherwood Forest.

 

The dual roles prospect "was an idea so far back, way back when at the time I had this proposed to me, and I read it and thought, 'I don't really know what it does for it, but it's alright'," Scott told MTV. "It is better to simply have the evolution of a character called Robin Hood, who will come out of a point in the Crusades which is the end."

 

The Kingdom of Heaven helmer said the Robin Hood of his film will begin as a bowman in the army of English king Richard the Lionheart. The Sheriff of Nottingham will now be "less important," with the film's central menace being the French.

 

 

 

The Expendables:

Former action star turned California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will cameo as himself in Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables". Arnie will shoot a one day cameo appearance in the action-team up film in which a team of mercenaries is sent to infiltrate a South American country to overthrow the ruthless dictator and liberate the country. Stallone directs and stars in the film which also stars Forest Whitaker, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, and Dolph Lundgren. The site also reports that Eric Roberts will replace Ben Kingsley in the role of a corrupt CIA agent. Filming kicks off at the end of next month.

 

 

 

The Associate:

"The Departed" scribe William Monahan has been set by Paramount to adapt John Grisham's bestselling legal thriller "The Associate" as a star vehicle for Shia LaBeouf. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing. The novel was published in January by Random House. LaBeouf will play a Yale Law School student with a sordid secret that leaves him vulnerable to blackmail. He's manipulated into taking a job at a law firm and working on a multibillion-dollar lawsuit. Monahan, who won an Oscar for adapting the Asian film "Infernal Affairs" into "The Departed" for Martin Scorsese, takes on the job as he is preparing to make his directorial debut on his scripted adaptation of the Ken Bruen novel "London Boulevard," financed by GK Films and starring Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley. Production begins in June in London.

 

 

 

Pride and Predator:

Will Clark will direct Pride and Predator which Elton John will produce through his Rocket Pictures production company. The movie will start out as a traditional Jane Austen-style costume drama (ala "Pride and Prejudice") but will veer into un-Austen-esque territory when an alien crash lands and begins an assault on the film's well-mannered main characters. Shooting is currently scheduled to begin later this year in London. Clark wrote the script with Andrew Kemble and John Pape. In addition to producing, Elton John will also supervise the music

 

 

 

Who Is Doris Payne:

Halle Berry is attached to star in Who Is Doris Payne. The project is a fact-based account about an international jewel thief whose career spanned five decades. Payne is currently serving time in Las Vegas. Eunetta Boone wrote the script.

 

 

 

Nerverackers:

Robert Rodriguez is set to reteam with Dimension for his next film, the futuristic thriller "Nerverackers." The multihyphenate will write and direct the pic, which already has a release date of April 16, 2010. Set in 2085, the story centers on a character named Joe Tezca who is part of an elite unit dispatched to quell a crime wave in a theoretically perfect future society.

 

 

 

The Book of Eli:

Evan Jones ("Jarhead," "October Road") is set to star in Warner Bros.' futuristic western "The Book of Eli". In "Eli," Jones will play the leader of a quartet of bikers who tussle with Eli (Denzel Washington). Gary Oldman, Jennifer Beals and Mila Kunis also star in the Joel Silver-produced film which Albert and Allen Hughes ("From Hell") are directing.
