Joe Marches Into Live Action Industry News, Scoop, Friday, September 19, 2003 Variety reports that Lorenzo di Bonaventura, former Warner Bros. exec and manager of The Matrix, Harry Potter, Scooby-Doo, and Batman film franchises, has been "recruited" by Hasbro to head a movie deal for G.I. Joe. Di Bonaventura is currently producing the film Constantine, based on DC-Vertigo's Hellblazer. That film, starring Keanu Reaves, has just started shooting.Di Bonaventura has secured the G.I. Joe rights from Hasbro and will pitch his ideas on how to bring the 39-year-old soldier to the world of live action to studios beginning this week. PAWTUCKET, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 2003--Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE:HAS) announced today an agreement with prominent film producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to develop and produce a full-length, live-action feature film based on Hasbro's legendary G.I. JOE brand. "A G.I. JOE live-action movie is a natural," said di Bonaventura, a film producer and former Executive Vice President and Head of Worldwide Production and Domestic Marketing for Warner Brothers. "Three generations of children grew up with the G.I. JOE brand and after nearly 40 years, it's an honor to be able to bring the saga and its characters to life on movie screens." "A live-action film will deliver high energy and non-stop excitement to the millions of fathers and sons that share awesome memories of G.I. "Lorenzo has an amazing track-record for picking winners in the entertainment industry and we are thrilled at his enthusiasm and approach towards the G.I. JOE brand." New Street Fighter Live Action Film Planned for 2008October 31, 2006 Variety is reporting that Hyde Park Entertainment and video game maker Capcom Ltd. have formed a joint venture to produce a new Street Fighter live action film for release in 2008, which will be the 20th anniversary of the Street Fighter video game. Screenwriter Justin Marks, who has just finished writing Voltron for producer Mark Gordon, has been hired to pen the script for the new live action Street Fighter film, which will focus on the exploits of Chun Li, the game's most popular female fighter. In 1994 Jean Claude Van Damme starred in the first Hollywood live action Street Fighter film. Earlier this year Manga Entertainment released the Street Fighter II anime feature in its uncut form for the first time here in the States and it was one of the top anime releases of the summer. Early next year Sota Toys is planning to release a new series of Street Fighter Action Figures, which testifies to the enduring appeal of the property. Although it may no longer be "state-of-the-art" in the highly competitive fighting video game category, more than 25 million Street Fighter games have been sold as well as 500,000 arcade units. Voltron: Defender of the Universe Live Action Movie Coming to a Movie Theater Near You in 2007 [VOLTRON]Producer Mark Gordon ("The Day After Tomorrow") is developing a live action feature film based on the 1980s giant robot kids TV series and toy sensation. The "Voltron" animated TV series debuted in 1984, about the same time as Hasbro's Transformers toy line, igniting a morphing robot phenomenon. It's interesting to note that this movie seems destined to come out at about the same time as Spielberg's Transformers movie. This is not unexpected given Hollywood's proclivity for releasing movies in pairs. The story is currently being written, but it will apparently be based on the series about "five maverick explorer-pilots who must travel to the planet Arus to learn how to operate Voltron, a giant mechanical warrior formed by five smaller robots. The gargantuan robot is the last hope against the evil Drule Empire that has subjugated Earth and taken control of the universe." Mark Costa and Ford Oelman, of New Line Cinema, secured the rights from "Voltron" owner World Events, and eventually brought the project to Gordon, whose credits also include "Saving Private Ryan" and "Speed." Costa and Oelman will be Executive Producers, along with Pharrell Williams, who will score the film and produce the soundtrack. Edited November 9, 2006 by kUrTsKY Quote Link to comment
