Director Joe Johnston Talks Pre-Production of Captain America

During their interview with The Wolfman director Joe Johnston, Film Journal got the latest on the pre-production from the director about the upcoming big screen adaptation of the beloved comic series, Captain America.

"We're in prep," Johnston says. "Rick Heinrichs is production-designing and we're set up down in Manhattan Beach [California]. It's the part of the process that I love the most," he enthuses. "We have eight or ten really talented artists, and we all just sit around all day and draw pictures and say, 'Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we could do this?' It's that phase of the production where money doesn't matter: 'Let's put all the greatest stuff up on the wall and [then later] see what we can afford.'" The film, he says at this early stage, will begin "in 1942, 1943" during World War II. "The stuff in the '60s and '70s [comic books] we're sort of avoiding. We're going back to the '40s, and then forward to what they're doing with Captain America now."

Captain America is slated for a July 22nd, 2011 release.

Live-Action Ghost in the Shell Writer Talks About the Script

It was first announced almost two years ago that Steven Spielberg would be developing a new live-action adaptation of the beloved manga Ghost in the Shell. Since then we've heard bits and pieces regarding the project, but they still haven't really progressed past the development stage on it. We also learned last October that Shutter Island writer (and Avatar executive producer) Laeta Kalogridis would be writing the script for Spielberg. While out promoting the release of Shutter Island, Kalogridis was asked about the latest on the adaptation.

The first, and arguably the most important, question Kalogridis is asked is whether she's adapting from the 1989 manga written by Masamune Shirow or the 1995 anime directed by Mamoru Oshii. Here's her answer:

"Ghost in the Shell was originally the manga. The anime came from the original graphic novel and then — and that anime, as you know, is a relatively famous, groundbreaking piece of material — also generated two seasons of an animated television show as well. And this is an adaptation of the original manga, the original comic book that sort of began everything."

Fast Five

Universal Pictures is hitting the accelerator on a fifth installment of "Fast and Furious," titled "Fast Five."

Studio has closed deals with Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, director Justin Lin and producer Neal Moritz to return to the franchise, which has become one of the studio's most lucrative.

Diesel and Walker sat out the third chapter in the series but returned for last year's fourth installment, which was the highest-grossing "Fast and Furious" film and Universal's top grosser of 2009. Its box-office haul was more than $350 million worldwide.

Chris Morgan is writing "Fast Five," marking the third time he and Lin have teamed for a "Fast and Furious" film. The story finds protags Dom (Diesel) and Brian (Walker) as fugitives being pursued by legendary lawmen.

Lensing will begin later this year for a 2011 release.

Original Films' Moritz has produced every film in the series, beginning in 2001 with the "The Fast and the Furious."

It's Official - Ivan Reitman Will Be Directing Ghostbusters 3!

It's now confirmed. Ivan Reitman, father of Jason Reitman who directed the two original Ghostbusters movies as well as Kindergarten Cop and My Super Ex-Girlfriend most recently, will direct Ghostbusters 3 sometime this year. Give or take the new screenwriters, it looks like the whole family is back again for Ghostbusters 3. We've known for a while Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, and even Rick Moranis, would be back!

He wouldn’t comment on recent rumors about the film. Reitman brushed off statements by Sigourney Weaver, who said that Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman character may appear in the film as a ghost. “I’m not going to comment on what’s in the script and on what Sigourney may or may not have said.” He offers that there are “some very cool things” in the script now.

This I gotta see, I'm a fan

Transformers 3:

Tyrese Gibson has confirmed that he will be reprising his role as Sgt. Epps in Michael Bay’s Transformers 3. In a post on Twitter, he confirmed by saying that “Yes I will for sure be in Transformers 3.. Get Ready!! Epps is here to STAY!!”.

Written by Ehren Kruger, Bay has described the screenplay as “feeling very different from the other two”, promising that the story will be much more about character, and will feature a lot less robots than Revenge of The Fallen. The film is being prepped for a shoot later this year, with an announced July 1st 2011 release date. Last we heard, Paramount was pushing Bay to shoot the film in 3D. Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox are both expected to return for the threequel, reprising their roles as Sam Witwicky and Mikaela Banes.

Spider-Man 3D:

Spider-Man will swing into theaters worldwide in 3D beginning July 3, 2012, it was announced today by Jeff Blake, Chairman of Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing & Distribution. The new film which is still untitled, will begin production later this year directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Commenting on the announcement, Blake said, “Spider-Man is the ultimate summer movie-going experience, and we’re thrilled the filmmakers are presenting the next installment in 3D. Spider-Man is one of the most popular characters in the world, and we know audiences are eager and excited to discover Marc’s fantastic vision for Peter Parker and the franchise.”

Green Lantern:

Tim Robbins has joined the cast of Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern. Robbins will play Senator Hammond, a former astronaut and the father of the movie’s villain Dr. Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard).

Along with Robbins and Sarsgaard, the movie will also star Ryan Reynolds in the lead role and Blake Lively as his love interest, Carol Ferris.

I almost found this hard to believe but Robbins did not appear in any movies in 2009. He last appeared on the silver screen in 2008’s City of Ember and he is not scheduled to be in any movies in 2010.

Green Lantern will start filming in March in New Orleans and will hit theatres on June 17, 2011.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

According to reports, Penelope Cruz is close to signing on to join Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment in the Pirates series. Cruz will play a character that will, in many ways, be the female version of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow and probably a great replacement for Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann.

Although little is known about the plot of Pirates 4, the story will revolve around the search for the Fountain of Youth.

Pirates 4 will reunite Cruz with Nine director Rob Marshall, the movie that garnered Cruz her second Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 2008 Cruz won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Pirates of the Carribean 4 is set to begin filming this summer in Hawaii and will hit theatres on May 11, 2011.

Norwegian Wood

http://factsanddetails.com/media/2/20090807-norwegian_wood_movie.jpg

Based on Haruki Murakami’s novel of the same name & directed by Tran Anh Hung (I Come With The Rain), Norwegian Wood is set in Japan 1969, it follows the relationship between a college student and two women, which are different. The release date is slated for December 2010 in Japan.

Official synopsis:

“I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me.”

The melancholy tune and sentiment of this classic Beatles song seems to have taken the life of Toru Watanabe (Kenichi Matsuyama), who is similarly uncertain as to how he should view his relationships. At heart, a quiet and serious young Tokyo college student in 1969, Watanabe, is deeply devoted to his first love, Naoko (Rinko Kikuchi), a beautiful and introspective young woman. But their mutual passion is made by the tragic death of their best friend years before. Watanabe lives with the influence of death everywhere, while Naoko feels as if some integral part of her has been permanently lost. On the night of Naoko’s 20th birthday, they finally made love to each other. However, shortly thereafter Naoko decided to quit college and become a recluse. It is at that time Midori (Kiko Mizuhara)--a girl who is everything that Naoko is not--outgoing, vivacious, supremely self-confident--marches into Watanabe's life and he has to choose between his future and his past.

Working Girls 2010

From philstar.com

GMA Films and Viva Films are ensuring that
Working Girls 2010
will live up to the tradition of its 25-year-old, critically-acclaimed predecessor that many laud as iconic sexy comedy film ahead of its time.

The sequel to the 1984 Ishmael Bernal-classic not only cast four of the original lead actresses in
Working Girls
, namely
Maria Isabel Lopez
,
Gina Pareño
,
Carmi Martin
and
Rio Locsin
; but it also gathers today’s hottest stars including
Ruffa Gutierrez
,
Eugene Domingo
,
Iza Calzado
,
Jennylyn Mercado
and
Cristine Reyes
.

The movie is directed by
Jose Javier Reyes
. “Although some of the lead stars of the first
Working Girls
are in the new movie, the focus of the story is not on them but on the younger working girls. We will be telling the stories of the new characters whose lives happen to intertwine with those from the original batch,” said Reyes.

There are many tweaks on the central elements of the new film. For one, the lead characters from the first
Working Girls
were assistants (receptionist, secretary) who all worked in Ayala, Makati City while most of the new film’s working girls command huge salaries and hold top posts in such diverse industries as media, health and call centers.

Reyes said that huge big time gap between the two films made it necessary to opt for a sequel rather than a remake. “So much has changed since 1984 that some of the things that were shown in the original film are no longer applicable such as confetti in Ayala, etc. And we’ve had two woman presidents since. Obviously, the status of women in our society has evolved, and along with it, their stories,” said Reyes.

While the two film giants that have joined hands in producing
Working Girls 2010
are eager to release their film, Reyes said they are careful that every detail is worked out perfectly. “
Working Girls
is a comedy, which, to some people, is a genre of lightweight caliber. But make no mistake about it: Hindi pipitsugin yung pelikulang yon at maging ang pelikula namin. Coming up with a high-quality sequel is the least we can do to honor the legacy of Ishmael Bernal. He, after all, is a National Artist of the Philippines and
Working Girls
is one of his classic films. To say that expectations are high on the update is an understatement,” said Reyes.

Even the actors in support roles were handpicked to fit their roles. Among these are
Cherie Gil
,
Eula Valdez
and
Mylene Dizon
.

As with the original,
Working Girls 2010
tells the story of women who will do anything and use everything to get what they want. The cast and crew are wrapping up work on the movie, tentatively set for release on April 21.

It's Jose Javier reyes so...
