The First Avenger: Captain America

Marvel Studios has tapped Joe Johnston to suit up and direct its superhero actioner “The First Avenger: Captain America.” Johnston is readying a redo of “The Wolfman” at Universal Pictures, which bows in April. Marvel is looking to launch a new franchise, starring Captain America to follow successful launches of Iron Man and a reboot of The Incredible Hulk. Pic bows May 6, 2011, with Paramount distribbing.

A thesp has yet to be cast as Captain America, who will also co-star in “The Avengers,” also hitting screens in 2011. Pic will introduce Steve Rogers, who volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the patriotic super soldier known as Captain America. Marvel Studios’ prexy Kevin Feige will produce, Louis D’Esposito, Stan Lee and Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel will exec produce. Johnston, who previously helmed “The Rocketeer,” “October Sky” and “Jurassic Park III,” is also developing “The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud.”

X-Men Origns: Magneto

Purported plot details have emerged about director David Goyer and 20th Century Fox's X-Men prequel Magneto.

"The storyline will heavily involve Professor X, the wheelchair-using X-Men leader. That character was a soldier in the allied force that liberated the concentration camps. The professor meets Magneto after the war and while they bond over the realization that they are alike in their special powers, their differences soon turn them into enemies."

This storyline is in keeping with Uncanny X-Men #161, a flashback issue that revealed the origins of Xavier and Magneto's friendship.

At a hospital for recovering Holocaust victims in Haifa, Israel, an ambulatory Charles Xavier discusses a potential evolution in man and the world's reaction to such a discovery. The early seeds of the philosophical battle between Professor X and Magneto are sown in a very frank discussion that precludes an encounter with HYDRA. The two essentially come out to one another and while Charles is foolish enough to believe he has discovered a new ally for the future, Magnus knows too well that their lives are taking separate paths.

Akira and Ninja Scroll (live-action):

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company has been picking up classic heavy-hitters from the world of Japanese manga and anime — most notably “Akira” and “Ninja Scroll” — to develop into live-action feature films. While the news of “Ninja Scroll” is still fresh on the blogs, “Akira” has already made some moves in Hollywood, being picked up by Warner Bros., scooping up Gary Whitta to write the script, and there’s even rumors that Joseph Gordon Levitt will play the role of Tetsuo.

“We’re waiting for the final draft of the script [for 'Akira'],” DiCaprio told MTV. “I’m a big fan of Japanese anime — that and another project called ‘Ninja Scroll’ we’re trying to get developed and made into a movie, and I know there a lot of loyal fans out there of the project and die-hard fans, so we’re going to try to do the best job we possibly can and we’re not going to make the movie until the script is in the right shape.”

However, for those of you out there hoping to see DiCaprio on Kaneda’s souped up motorcycle in “Akira” or munching on rice balls a la Jubei Kibagami in “Ninja Scroll,” don’t hold your breath. When asked about what his role will be in these properties, DiCaprio made it clear that he’d be producing, and as for as any interest in acting: “No, not really,” he responded.

The Karate Kid (remake)s:

Columbia Pictures is back in the dojo with a new version of the 1984 hit "The Karate Kid," which has been refashioned as a star vehicle for Jaden Smith. The film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (who launched the original franchise) and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz. Will Smith, who is the 10-year-old actor's father, co-starred alongside Jaden in his feature debut, "The Pursuit of Happyness," which Overbrook and Escape Artists produced for Columbia.

The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor. China Film Group Corp. will co-produce in China. The younger Smith, who next stars in "The Day the Earth Stood Still," is a martial arts practitioner.

Twilight sequels:

With Summit Entertainment preparing to release its big bet "Twilight," the studio is moving potential future installments in the franchise into the development pipeline. The company has

acquired rights to the next three novels in Stephenie Meyer's blockbuster vampire series and has hired "Twilight" scribe Melissa Rosenberg to pen scripts based on "New Moon" and "Eclipse," the second and third books, respectively. A fourth book, "Breaking Dawn," has not attached a writer.

"Twilight," which revolves around the relationship between an average teenage girl, Bella, and a vampire, Edward, in a rainy Northwest town, has been generating huge buzz ahead of its Nov. 21 bow. Summit, which has been eager for a franchise as it rolls out its distribution slate, hopes that the movie's built-in teen and early-twentysomething audience will get an added boost from older filmgoers.

In "New Moon," Edward leaves Bella, sending Bella into a depression and a friendship with another werewolf. In the third book, "Eclipse," that relationship triangle evolves, while evil vampires begin to pursue Bella. "Breaking Dawn" pushes the plot further with a marriage between Bella and Edward.

World War Z:

Max Brooks World War Z zombie novel which is being adapted into a feature film finally has its director. Marc Foster director of Quantum of Solace has been tapped to direct the paramount project. The really interesting part here is that the production company doing the movie is Plan B and is owned by Brad Pitt. The rumor is that Brad will star in the feature film.

Brooks tells the story of the world's desperate battle against the zombie threat with a series of first-person accounts "as told to the author" by various characters around the world. A Chinese doctor encounters one of the earliest zombie cases at a time when the Chinese government is ruthlessly suppressing any information about the outbreak that will soon spread across the globe. The tale then follows the outbreak via testimony of smugglers, intelligence officials, military personnel and many others who struggle to defeat the zombie menace. Despite its implausible premise and choppy delivery, the novel is surprisingly hard to put down. The subtle, and not so subtle, jabs at various contemporary politicians and policies are an added bonus.

Blown:

Samuel L.Jackson is set to try and blow up London -- not in real life thankfully -- but in the appropriately-titled espionage thriller Blown. Jim Caviezel is also set to star as the I5 agent tasked with stopping him. Jackson's villain is Julian Lezard, an evil businessman who "engages him in a high-stakes game of wits and deception."

Pinocchio (remake):

Guillermo del Toro's developing "Pinocchio" as a stop-motion feature with the Jim Henson Co. as a darker version of the original fairy tale. Project will be produced by JHC co-toppers Brian Henson and Lisa Henson along with senior VP Jason Lust. Del Toro will exec produce. Del Toro's working on the screenplay with Gris Grimley, who illustrated a 2002 version of "Pinocchio." Grimley and Adam Parrish King will co-direct the film.

Pinocchio first appeared in the 19th Century book "The Adventures of Pinocchio" by Carlo Collodi. Walt Disney produced the first feature version of the story with his animated "Pinocchio" in 1940. "Pinocchio" is the latest in a long list of projects to which del Toro's attached. Top priority is New Line and MGM's "The Hobbit," the two-picture project he's committed the next five years to as director and co-writer with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. He also has a three-year first-look deal with Universal, where he's setting up remakes of "Frankenstein," "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and "Slaughterhouse-Five" and an adaptation of "Drood" and several other projects

The Summoner:

James Cox ("Highway," "Wonderland") will direct the psychological horror feature "The Summoner" for Dark Castle and Warner Bros. Pictures. The story centers on a young man experimenting with the dark arts who summons a supernatural being to our world. When his control begins to slip and the situation turns deadly, he must stop the onslaught of evil before it's too late. Matthew Sand penned the script, Joel Silver and David Gambino are producing. First Avenger: Captain America

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are in negotiations to write Marvel Studios' First Avenger: Captain America, to be directed by Joe Johnston and produced by Marvel's Kevin Feige. Created in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon for Timely Comics, Captain America is the heroic alter ego of Steve Rogers, who is rejected by the Army for being too sickly and undergoes an experiment that takes him to the pinnacle of human form. Paired with an indestructible shield, he becomes a symbol of the war effort, fighting Nazis and villainous scientists like the Red Skull.

In modern times, the character starred in his own long-running comic series and also was a charter member of Marvel's superteam, the Avengers. Marvel's "Captain America" will be a World War II-set movie, and the character will appear in modern day-set The Avengers.

X-Men: First Class

Gossip Girl creator Josh Schwartz has been hired by 20th Century Fox to script X-Men: First Class. The project will reportedly focus on a new and younger set of mutants than the older protagonists of the prior three films. Schwartz turned down the chance to also direct the film. The trade claims that X-Men: First Class "would likely draw from elements of the Marvel Comic of the same name, launched in 2006, and enlist such characters as Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat, who have appeared prominently or made cameos in prior pics."

"Given the penchant for reboots with new actors playing familiar roles, pic could also reintroduce characters." X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner will produce First Class along with X-Men: The Last Stand co-screenwriter Simon Kinberg.

But one of the students, a mysterious girl who seems to hear whispered voices, fills her sheet of paper with rows of apparently random numbers instead.

As Ted further unravels the document's secrets, he realizes it foretells three additional events—the last of which hints at destruction on a global scale and seems to somehow involve Ted and his son. When Ted's attempts to alert the authorities fall on deaf ears, he takes it upon himself to try to prevent more destruction from taking place.

Bakugan Battle Brawlers: The Movie

Universal Pictures is bringing the red-hot Japanese anime property " Bakugan Battle Brawlers " to the big screen. A "Bakugan" series airs six days a week on the Cartoon Network, where it is one of the cable channel's top shows. It is also a strategic game that uses metal cards and magnetic, spring-loaded miniature figures that transform from marble-like balls into toy monsters. The show's story line revolves around creatures called Bakugan and the young human battle brawlers who wield them. The creatures have such names as Pyrus Drago, Haos Tigrerra, Ventus Skyress, Subterra Gorem and Darkus Hydranoid that inform their character and power; they are involved in a battle in a parallel dimension called Vestroia that spills into ours. No writers are on board, but the studio jumped at the chance to be in business with a toy that has a growing worldwide fan base.

Tron 2.0:

"House" co-star Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett are the first to sign on for "Tron 2.0," a sequel to the 1982 Disney cult classic. The original, about a programer thrust into a computer and forced to fight in games he helped create, is remembered for its sci-fi gladiator-style battles and groundbreaking special effects. The new movie is acting as a "next chapter." Plot details are being guarded closely, but Wilde will play a worker in the virtual world who tries to help fight Master Control Program , the villainous intelligence protocol that was the nemesis in the original. Garrett (" Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer ") will play a siren in the virtual world.

H2:

Dimension Films and Rob Zombie are teaming for another chapter of "Halloween," and he's racing to scare up the pic for release in October. Zombie will write and direct "H2," the sequel to his 2007 reinvention of the John Carpenter horror classic. Production will begin in March. The new film picks up right as the first remake ended, following the aftermath of Michael Myers' murderous rampage through the eyes of the sister he hunted. Zombie said it won't resemble the original second installment, as the "House of 1000 Corpses" helmer continues to take the franchise in different directions.

Director Paul WS Anderson says that the "Resident Evil" franchise is set for another sequel.

"I'm writing a script right now. The script side is happening. It's going to be difficult what's happening when until the whole SAG thing is resolved. But that's something I'm working on right now. Everyone at [game developer] Capcom has had their input into the idea and they're all very excited. I don't want to tell you what it is but it's very exciting."

He added, "Once again we're doing it completely with the blessing of the videogame company. We got a lot of flack [on the sequels] for, 'Why isn't the movie set in the mansion just exactly like the very first videogame?' That's just not progression for me. As the Resident Evil videogames themselves have developed in leaps and bounds -- it's like when we did the last movie people were like, 'Resident Evil doesn't take place in the desert. What the f*ck is this?' Well, where does Resident Evil take place? Does it take place in Raccoon City exclusively? Well, I don't think so because the game has been in Antarctica, in Raccoon City, now it's in Africa. We're doing it very much in conjunction with the developers of the videogame to give the audience something fresh but something that fits within the world of the videogame."
