http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/5743/solace1qp4.jpg

The Day The Earth Stood Still (remake):

Monty Python veteran John Cleese will join Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Kathy Bates and Jaden Smith in 20th Century Fox's remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still. Cleese will play physicist Dr. Barnhardt, a Nobel Prize laureate who plays a key part in figuring out the mission and meaning of the arrival of the alien Klaatu (played by Reeves). In the original 1951 film an alien lands and tells the people of Earth that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets.

Cadillac Records:

Beyonce has been cast to play famed singer Etta James on his next film, 'Cadillac Records'. The story is about Leonard Chess, the legendary founder of the South Side Chicago blues label Chess Records. The period piece follows the rise and fall of Chess Records, which launched the careers of such R&B greats as Muddy Waters, Etta James and Chuck Berry. Chess, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, scoured the South, checking out the various blues scenes and selling records from the back of his Cadillac. Cedric the Entertainer will play Willie Dixon, who wrote most of the hits records and was part of the famous company. One of his most famous songs was "Hoochie Coochie Man". Oscar winner Adrien Brody has also joined the cast to replace Matt Dillon as Leonard Chess, the founder of Chess Records. Dillon had to drop out of the project due to a scheduling conflict. As previously reported, Jeffrey Wright will portray Muddy Waters in the film set in 1950s Chicago. Also new to the cast are Emmanuelle Chriqui, Columbus Short and Tammy Blanchard. Darnell Martin ("Their Eyes Were Watching God") penned the script and is directing.

Armored:

Laurence Fishburne, Jean Reno and Milo Ventimiglia have all signed on to Screen Gems' heist flick ARMORED. Nimrod Antal (VACANCY) is directing the film about a young armored car guard who is persuaded by his veteran cohorts to empty a truck of its $10 million cargo. Matt Dillon, Columbus Short (STOMP THE YARD), Fred Ward (ENOUGH) and Skeet Ulrich are all already involved.

Bell plays the franchise's central character Jigsaw, while Patterson and Mandylor play FBI Agent Strahm and police detective Hoffman, respectively. Patterson made his franchise debut in Saw IV, while Mandylor joined in Saw III.

Monster Slayer:

Anchor Bay has grabbed up the low-budget horror flick JACK BROOKS: MONSTER SLAYER, and will apparently give it at least a minimal theatrical release (likely similar to last year's mayhem-loaded slasher HATCHET). The movie is about out a lumber (Trevor Matthews) with a beast-battling legacy, who finds himself fighting genre veteran Robert Englund, flailing tentacles, and various monsters in old-school latex makeup.

Splice:

Delphine Chaneac, David Hewlett (Cube, Nothing) and Brandon McGibbon (Puppets Who k*ll; TV) will join Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley in Gaumont's Splice, which is filming through February 29 in Toronto, Hamilton, Ontario. Vincenzo Natali's film is about Elsa and Clive, two young rebellious scientists, defy legal and ethical boundaries and forge ahead with a dangerous experiment: splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism. Named Dren, the creature rapidly develops from a deformed female infant into a beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera, who forges a bond with both of her creators - only to have that bond turn deadly.

The Hobbit:

Guillermo Del Toro has now been announced as having officially signed on to direct both The Hobbit and another film based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien for New Line Cinema and MGM. Oscar winner Peter Jackson, who directed the Lord of the Rings trilogy, will executive produce The Hobbit. The screenplay cannot be worked on, however, until after the writers' strike ends. The Hobbit, written by Tolkien in 1937, takes place many years before The Lord of the Rings and centers on young Bilbo Baggins, who, along with a group of dwarves and Gandalf the wizard, embark on a quest to steal the treasure of Smaug the dragon. The first movie will reportedly tell this story, while the second will show events immediately preceding the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring.

Venom:

Reports says that Marvel Studios is gearing up for a film spin-off featuring "Spider-Man" villain Venom, and has already met with "several A-list writers" about the project. The studio signed an interim agreement with the WGA the other week allowing them to continue developing scripts for projects, and retains the rights to the character despite his appearance in Sony's highly profitable but critically mixed "Spider-Man 3". No word if actor Topher Grace will reprise his role of if Sam Raimi will be involved though both are unlikely.
