Angel Gender-Bender?

X3 rumor control.

March 17, 2005 - Ain't It Cool News has broken the news about which new mutants will appear in X-Men 3. According to the site, Hank McCoy, a.k.a. Beast, will finally make it into the cast after being cut from X-Men and only having a cameo in X2: X-Men United.

Gambit, that ragin' Cajun in a trenchcoat, is another fan fave that will be in the mix. The third and most shocking revelation was that the winged Angel "will be in the movie. But Angel ... will be a girl," claimed AICN.

IGN FilmForce checked with its super-secret X3 insider who declared that "Angel is male!" We were advised that Angel (a.k.a. Warren Worthington III) will be a "major character" as will Beast.

Beast will be seen in his transformed state and will be played by a different actor than Steve Bacic, who appeared as Hank McCoy in X2.

Overall, our source confirmed the rest of the AICN report as accurate but emphasized that "Gambit is not a major character." While the ragin' Cajun enjoyed a relationship with Rogue in the comics, it's uncertain whether that will be a part of X3 in any way (or how any potential affair will sit with Rogue's current beau, Bobby "Iceman" Drake).

IGN's source also revealed that Cyclops is still in the movie but not as a major character. They would not reveal anything more about his part but did confirm that Matthew Vaughn is indeed on-board to direct.

Ain't It Cool, who broke the news earlier this week that Matthew Vaughn (LAYER CAKE) would be directing X3 is back again today with more news from the third installment in the X-MEN trilogy. This time they're shedding some light on what new characters will be added to the film. Those who've followed the first and second X-MEN films shouldn't be surprised by the three characters they've added to the team but there is one sweeping change that should spark all kinds of debate. Beast, Gambit and Angel, each very close to having been involved in the two prior films, will finally get their moment on the big screen (and yes, smarty pantses out there, I know Henry "Beast" McCoy cameod but that doesn't count). AICN is reporting that the producers are looking at a big name to star as Gambit and (get this) a young girl to star as Angel. Yes, Angel will be a girl in X3. Now I know there will be a lot of X fans out there who'll be up in arms but I don't think it's necessarily an awful move. Sure, it deviates from X Universe canon but chances are Angel won't be a major character anyway so is it worth getting all persnickety about? Not really. And this is coming from a guy who loved Angel and the whole Archangel storyline when he lost his organic wings and had to have them replaced by the more sinister metallic ones. If they were going to tackle that storyline I'd be more pissed. But Angel doesn't seem to be the driving force of X3 (if anything Gambit will play a much larger role) so let's just wait and see what happens...

Spider-man 3 news:

Remember those rumors late last week that Chloe Sevigny might be starring as the villain, Black Cat, in SPIDER-MAN 3? Well check that. In a surprise announcement this morning, Sony Pictures announced who would be playing the villain in the film and it's not Ms. Sevigny or Black Cat. Academy Award nominee Thomas Haden Church has signed on to play Spider-Man's nemesis in SPIDER-MAN 3 said director Sam Raimi. "In addition to the ongoing relationship between Peter Parker and M.J., these films are driven by the great actors who have brought our villains to life," Raimi said. "Thomas Haden Church will be a fantastic and challenging new nemesis, and we all look forward to working with him." Unfortunately it was not confirmed who Church would be starring as. While this is not confirmed, JoBlo.com sources have whispered in my ear that Church will indeed be starring as Eddie Brock/Venom. They certainly do bear a resemblance and it makes the most sense to have Venom (and/or Carnage) in SPIDER-MAN 3 as the villain.

Venom came to be after Spider-Man returned to Earth after the first Secret War with a new black costume. Once Spidey learned the costume was actually an alien symbiote trying to bond with his body, he jettisoned it and returned to his classic red and blue duds. Brock, who despised Spider-Man, accidentally found the costume/symbiote and the alien sensed his anger toward the web-slinger and they bonded created the villainous Venom. Most interestingly, because of their former bond, Spider-Man's "spidey sense" is rendered useless against Venom. Another actor, R.C. Everbeck, made a brief cameo (that was mostly cut) in the original SPIDER-MAN but since only geeks like me know something as pointless as that, don't expect the producers to try and explain this. Again, while it has been confirmed Thomas Haden Church will star, it HAS NOT been confirmed yet that he will star as Venom. That's just what we're hearing here at JoBlo headquarters. (Proving there are two sides to every story, AICN says they're hearing it might be Sandman and not Venom.) More on this as it develops... UPDATE - A few readers have written in to point su towards a report in a local New York newspaper that says, in a profile of SPIDER-MAN 3 f/x artist Tim Phoenix, Venom and Man-Wolf will be the villains in the film.

Phoenix flies in X-Men 3

Posted on Sun, 27-Mar-2005

Thought it has been rumoured more times than mutterings of a a second commercial Television network in Australia, IGN FilmForce have confirmed that Dark Phoenix (Famke Janssen) will indeed be the villain of the next, Singer-less "X-Men" sequel.

Apparently Dark Phoenix - the new alter ego of X-Gal Jean Grey, who, in the comics had the power to destroy the entire Universe. But in the end, good triumphed and she destroyed herself to prevent such an occurrence - will be the - ahem - Rogue of "X-Men 3", but that doesn't mean she'll be the only focus of the film. She's a mere slice off the fat block of cheese it seems.

Rumours that 'The Sentinels' would be the villain-to-pop in the second sequel have seemingly fallen flat. They won't be seen this time around either it seems.

According to the abovementioned site, "X-Men 3" will, in addition to the 'Dark Phoenix' yarn, largely concentrate on Wolverine's (Hugh Jackman) continuing growth as a vital member of the X-Men.

Meantime, Marvel big-wig Avi Arad helped Empire Online clear up some of the other rumours about the super sequel.

Firstly, is 'Angel' going to be a girl? "It won't be a female Angel," Arad told the site. "I don't know where that came from. Maybe it's because he looks angelic."

Probed whether Gambit and Beast, as rumoured, will be involved this time - Arad kept mum. "[There are] interesting characters that will be introduced. It just has to move forward", he said. "Obviously, we have Wolverine and Magneto, Professor X, Storm, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Rogue, all these characters. But then you need to freshen up the story and make it new".

And yes, James Marsden - whose busy with a role in "Superman" - will be back it seems - but his character, Cyclops, will be spending most of the pic on the sidelines

Aoki and Valance in Yuen's D.O.A

Posted on Mon, 28-Mar-2005

Hold onto your joysticks.

Aussie singer Holly Valance - or 'Flick' as she's known to fans of TV's "Neighbours" - and "2 Fast 2 Furious" petrolhead Devon Aoki have secured roles in the film version of computer-game "D.O.A".

The 21-year-old Valance, next seen in "Pledge This!" with Paris Hilton, and Aoki, next in "Sin City", hit the dojo next month to brush up on their Kung-Fu, for the gig.

Directed by Corey Yuen, "DOA" tells of of an all-female kick-boxing squad trying to guard their employer.

Bounty-hunter Christie has been hired to bring in uber-crook Fame Douglas. Upon his return, she'll be paid a desirable fifty million big ones.

Unfortunately, Fame Douglas has hidden himself at the top of a tower, smack-bang in the middle of a remote island. On each floor, Christie encounters a member of the DOA troupe - and they've been paid to make sure she doesn't advance to the next - excuse the game pun - level.

Natasshia Malthe ["Elektra"] is also rumoured to have landed a role in the film.

Based on Tecmo's best-selling video game franchise, the script was written by J.F. Lawton, and is set up at Impact Pictures.

While we're talking home soil talent like Valance (though one was a lot more talented than the other) just want to say how sad it was to hear of local boy Paul Hester's - the drummer from "Crowded House" for the not conversant - death on the weekend.

Hester, who had been hosting the MusicMAX sessions on Cable in recent times, apparently committed suicide. His body was found in an Elwood Park on the weekend. He leaves behind two daughters and his partner. A true-blue talent that will most certaintly be missed. Rest in Peace Paul. "Don't Dream It's Over".

Thanks to 'Bitchslap'

SE7EN, THE GAME, FIGHT CLUB and PANIC ROOM director David Fincher is currently shooting a sequel to his first major hit from 1996, SE7EN, starring the same two men from the original, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, in what is tentatively known on the set as EI8HT.

Word on the street is that the sequel might contain a scene in which Pitt’s character Mills dreams of his wife’s decapitated head (the head played by Gwyneth Paltrow in SE7EN), a scene which apparently Pitt asked to play against a picture of his own separated ex-honey, Aniston. ‘Jimmy Doe’ told us that “Brad was about as messed up as one could be that day. I remember him showing up in a skirt, thinking that he was still shooting TROY. He really loved Jennifer and he’s taking it pretty hard. He doesn’t even smoke up as much as he used to.” The script apparently also features another dream sequence in which John Doe, played by Kevin Spacey in the original SE7EN, comes back as a "ghost" and "guides" Pitt through some of the new murder scenarios.

Plot:

Three years after the events in SE7EN, detective Mills (Pitt) is in a mental ward and discovers an eight ‘sin’ while reading through John Doe’s rambling notes. Mills contacts detective Somerset (Freeman) and asks him to investigate the matter, opening up a whole new underbelly of murders that had yet to be uncovered. Mills is released from the ward to work with Somerset on the case, but it isn’t long before Mills himself is suspected of either collaborating or being the source of the bizarre killings himself.
