Kawhi Leonard can take the Toronto Raptors to a new level

As risky as it is trading for someone who only has one year remaining on their contract, a healthy Kawhi Leonard has the potential to take the Raptors to a new level.

The Kawhi Leonard saga is over. According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the San Antonio Spurs have agreed to trade the two-time All-Star to the Toronto Raptors for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl and a protected 2019 first-round pick.

Leonard joins a Raptors team looking to capitalize on LeBron James leaving the Eastern Conference next season. Toronto won a franchise-best 59 games in the 2017-18 season, and yet their revamped offense wasn't enough to prevent them from suffering the same defeat - a sweep at the hands of LeBron and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the playoffs - as the season prior. As risky as it is trading a four-time All-Star in the prime of his career for someone who only has one year remaining on their contract, a healthy Leonard has the potential to take the Raptors to an entirely new level.

The Kawhi Leonard of 2016-17 was one of the best offensive players in the NBA. Not only did he finish between LeBron James and Stephen Curry in scoring with 25.5 points per game, the San Diego State product shot an efficient 48.5 percent from the field, 38.0 percent from 3-point range and 88.0 percent from the charity stripe. He generated more of his scoring on open shots than the league's other leading scorers - one benefit of playing in Gregg Popovich's tried-and-tested system - but it had just as much to do with Leonard being as complete of a scorer as there is in the NBA.

There are rumors circulating that Kawhi is planning to seat out this upcoming season as he has no interest in playing with the Raptors.

Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green traded to DeMar DeRozan and Jakob Poeltl.

Kawhi Leonard and DeMar DeRozan headline the blockbuster trade between the Toronto Raptors and San Antonio Spurs, but they aren't the only players involved. The Raptors announced on Wednesday that they have acquired Danny Green in the deal in exchange for Jakob Poeltl and a protected 2019 first-round pick.

Popovich and Buford must be laughing their ass off. They fleeced the Raptors. The Raptors traded their best player for the Spurs' best player who has three years remaining on his contract while Kawhi has only a year left and will probably be a rental for one year.

Let's see... Paul George happened... So let's see...

State of the Spurs.

Based on the standing, Spurs only two games behind GSW, Pels, Nuggets and the Blazers. It is still too early to tell but the best NBA team last year Houston Rockets is not dead last in the standings. OKC just got their first win last week.

Positives: Double D (Demar DeRozan) is leading the Spurs in scoring and assists (yes he is now the best passer on this team)

Rudy Gay is still healthy and reliable as a starter or coming of the bench. He has three double doubles in the last six games

Negatives: Point guard is the weakest position with the departure of Tony Parker, the ACL injury of Dejounte Murray and the ankle sprain on Derrick White. Patty Mills comes of the bench best and does not have a reliable shot. Bryn Forbes starts as the point and is averaging double figures but is a liability of defense. He is an average defender but a big drop from all NBA defensive team of Dejounte.

Another is the team defense. The first 4 games put the spurs as the worst defensive team (#30). After the last 2 games, it is now #26.

Weird notes: Popovich is adjusting to the strengths of Demar and LaMarcus midrange game. They tried to do some triangle offense which worked half the time. They were also trying to capitalize on the shooting of Forbes and hiding the limited offense of Dante Cunningham. Both are on the weak side of the offense as spot up shooters just in case Adridge or DeRozan sucks the defense in the paint.

Overall assessment: Spurs will make the playoffs as an 8th seed. The reason is some playoff bound hopefuls will see a dramatic drop such as the imploion of the Timberwolves and the inexperience of the Lakers despite having Lebron
