Aliens are likely going through their own "great filter", the same way we are. We are failing to cooperate and to mobilize/utilize all present human potential and we're yoo busy with petty fights and revenge which literally holds us back from progress (see Scorched Earth, Salted Earth, and geopolitics in general).

Honestly, I don’t want to meet them. If aliens can cross the universe while we can’t even explore our own neighborhood, any contact wouldn’t be between equals, we’d be completely at their mercy.

If the great filters are self-destruction and the necessities for progress are cooperation, ethics are a likely common denominator of intergalactic civilizations, as posited through Star Trek.

If advanced civilizations are destructive and war like, they'd basically be like space Hitler or space Genghis Khan. But violence begets violence and therefore opposition, so these species are more likely to self-destruct than ever get to earth.
