Best story and the introduction of zombies, sure.

But gunplay and gun-feel in MW2 were better, the guns had usable iron sights, the optics were less clunky, the graphics and art design were more polished, and the campaign had better setpiece moments.

Modern Warfare 2019 is peak movement with excellent slide-cancel feel, gun-feel, and (surprisingly in 2026) graphics. The campaign gameplay and design is the best in the series. (Unfortunately this was the beginning of CoD microtransaction hell).

Modern Warfare III (2023) has the best lineup of weapons and the best continuous content delivery in the franchise.

Black ops 6 introduced omni-movement which then added wall-jumps in Black Ops 7 to this current state of crackhead camera breaking movement, if you like that sort of thing.

Personally, my pick is Modern Warfare (2019).

A long CoD break is the best time to get addicted again. If you're a controller player, there is literally no game that matches the feel of CoD (except Apex, but that's because their team was founded by former Infinity Ward members).

This might be the time since people hate the Black Ops 7 campaign. But they might do something interesting in season 6 (they seem to be updating the "story" each season)
