My rules:

1.) Don't sit on your wallet if you keep it in your back-pocket - especially for an extended period of time as it blocks bloodflow in your buttocks.

2.) Don't overcrowd with your wallet with junk - keep the necessities - cash, one credit card and one ATM, two IDs - driver's license and health card

3.) A huge wallet just attracts unnecessary attention - should be big enough to see it if you misplace it and should be small enough that it will be difficult to be taken from you

4.) When commuting at night, bring a fake wallet (preferably your old one) with some cash in it in the event that you are held up.
