If you are starting out as a watch collector or if you are merely looking for a quality automatic watch that could last a lifetime (and pass on to your son or daughter) you cannot go wrong with Seiko 5. Nowadays there two generations of Seiko 5. The classic Seiko 5 will cost about under 4,000 depending on the model. Some can go as high as 6,000+. The classic Seiko 5 that cost that much are usually Made in Japan. Those that cost below 5K are manufactured in Malaysia or Singapore with the same high quality standard as the ones made in Japan. These usually have 3 bars of water resistance. This means they can handle splashes from rain or faucet while washing hands but are not meant to bathe/shower or swim with it. The classic Seiko 5 has a reliable 7S26 movement inside. This movement is non-hacking and non-hand winding.

Then there is the classic Seiko 5 Sports which costs between 6-9K. Seiko 5 Sports look sportier and has a higher water resistance of 10 bar. You can swim or bathe with it but you should not go snorkeling with it. The earlier model Seiko 5 Sports has a non-hacking and non-hand winding 7S36 movement. The later models have the hacking and winding 4R36. 

Meanwhile, the new generation Seiko 5 (with a 5 that resembles the Superman symbol) are newer versions of the classic Seiko 5 and Seiko 5 Sports. All of them have the 4R36 movement and 10 bar water resistance. Many of them are inspired from the classic SKX dive watch but none of the new generation Seiko 5 are actually dive watches. These will set you back 8K to 13K depending on the model. New generation Seiko 5 Limited Edition will set you back between 15K to 22K. Limited Edition include Naruto, Street Fighter and other anime. 

For ISO 6425 Certified diver’s watches, Seiko Prospex Turtle will be a great choice. It will cost 15K to 23K depending on model. The more expensive ones have nicer designs like Save Our Seas and PADI logo on them. 

Avoid buying Swatch automatic with Sistem 51. It is a disposable watch. All other watches, including the China made Pagani Design and Cadisen, can be opened up and repaired if needed. Any Swatch with Sistem 51 cannot be repaired because it is completely sealed in a plastic case. If you need to repair it, you need to break the plastic casing which renders the watch useless.

Omega x swatch Moonswatch good buy?

At this stage of my watch collection journey, I think I will stay with a dozen watches. It is an expensive hobby. I have eleven watches now. Only one is a gift (classic Seiko 5) and another one passed on to me from my late father (Rado). I have all 4 major Japanese brands.

My collection is now 3 Casio. 3 Seiko. 1 Alba. 1 Citizen. 1 Orient. 

My Swiss watch collection so far are 1 Rado. 1 Ball.

I am thinking of completing my dozen collection with either a Tissot or a Certina. But that’s for next year. 
 

After 12 watches, if I want another one, I have to sell one

I’m not really impressed. It has the look of the Omega Speedmaster but it is a lot more Swatch than Omega. It has a quartz movement. What I hate about analog quartz watches is if the seconds hand don’t align with the markers or indices. Sadly, the seconds hand, like so many other Swatches and other Swiss quartz watches, the seconds hand of the Omega x Swatch do not align with the markers all the time. But if that is not an issue with you, then buy it if you can. (For me, only Seiko and Casio analog quartz watches have seconds hands aligned with markers or indices.)

Don’t buy the Mission to Uranus because the blue dye will stick to your skin and turn your wrist blue. 

Water resistance is only 3 bar. Meaning it can take splashes from rain or faucet while washing hands, but you cannot swim, bathe or shower with it.
