QAZAR
I recently hit a down time in my life. After finishing Clerkship and graduating I lost my drive to pursue internship. What did you do then? And I was wondering is there any good hospitals for internship training? I was hoping for something benign, kasi bugbog na ako nung clerkship sa mga public hospitals. Yung may stipend na rin if available. I'm on the QC area by the way. Any advise from you guys will be pretty much appreciated. Thanks! Link to comment

Thanks! let me give you some advice bro.. choosing a career in medicine entails a lot of hardwork and sacrifice.. after getting your medical degree things will only get a lot harder and more difficult.. i`m assuming that you went into this with the right attitude and motivation.. becoming a physician is IMHO the noblest profession there is, and you are almost there na.. think of how much time, effort and finances that you and your parents have invested na.. i would suggest na wag ka umasa na merong hospital na benign ang trabaho ng intern kasi i don`t think there is one.. isipin mo na lang na when you are an intern na, you are just a heartbeat away from becoming a full-fledged physician, just pass the board exam after.. just do your best and strive for excellence while undergoing your internship na.. if and when you pass the board exam, i hope that you will not be satisfied with being a general practitioner only.. that you would go on to residency training and specialize.. :mtc: Link to comment

Mahirap na masarap, after residency training mag sub ka ng NURSING ! hehehehe ! joke lang ! just keep going and going and going !!!! Link to comment
hint-of-lime
I recently hit a down time in my life. I was hoping for something benign, kasi bugbog na ako nung clerkship sa mga public hospitals. Yung may stipend na rin if available. I'm on the QC area by the way. Any advise from you guys will be pretty much appreciated. Thanks! I think at this point, the question you have to consider is - do you still want to be a doctor? It is nothing to be ashamed of to give up and walk away because, let's face it - medicine is really not for everybody. Otherwise, we wouldn't be having all those other professions that, in their own way, contribute to making the world work. I have a friend who quit medicine right after clerkship and, as far as I know, she is quite happy in her chosen profession and has not regretted her decision. Now, if you want to be a doctor and get the best training, the best place to get it in terms of knowledge and clinical eye is a government hospital. True, bugbog ka nga, but you'll come out of it much tougher in terms of character and the clinical eye you get from treating so many patients with various manifestations of different diseases is just incomparable to what you see in private hospitals. Should you want to get into the best residency training programs, most of these are in government institutions and a very good internship will prepare you for your application to such a program. Is there such a thing as a good hospital for internship training which is also benign? I don't think it exists because what makes a teaching hospital good is the number and variety of patients that go to it for treatment. Number and variety usually translates to a lot of work for the medical staff. Think about it. Link to comment
angel_by_day
i dont know about the other hospitals but from where i came from, walang stipend during internship. i know there's global crisis everywhere, but reality is....you have to psych your mind up that from hereon, to residency to fellowship, stipends are just a plus. you should be prepared to work even without them. angel_by_day
the point being, you have barely started, and the way you say it, you seem burnt out na. that is not the way to go. if you need to rest, then do so. but you have to like what you do, and never take it as grudgework or something that you are forced to do.you have to like being in the hospital, staying in the hospital....you should be happy thriving in toxicity, so to speak. simply because there is no benign work here, not until you become a consultant after about 10 years of private practice. only then can you really relax. kase mahaba pa yan eh. and it doesnt stop with 1 board exam. i suggest you take a year off or something, but do not take it too slow either. the momentum and zest to achieve more will wane. easyhard
Consider other career options. Get professional help. At this point, a no nonsense advise and direction is needed. I have seen a number of people who changed careers after clerkship. They did well in their chosen path. and they never regretted it. Being "toxic" is a state of mind. If you compare the level of toxicity between an intern in a supposedly benign hospital and one in a physically demanding goverment hospital, it will most probbaly be the same. It is a frame of mind. You will feel the same sense of being wasted and overworked even in the institutions perceived to be as benign. If there is one, it is not a good hospital. Link to comment
markspencer
bro, tama lahat sila. I suggest you continue with your internship. If you wanna have a balanced internship, try Makati Medical Center! It's not super benign bec. there are also a lot of cases. You could also do hands-on procedures with some patients. There are also many conferences, lectures, free foods and PARTY!!! The residents and consultants are very nice. Alaga ang mga intern sa MMC. I transferred hospitals na rin during internship buti na lang MMC ang choice ko. Link to comment
kanski
think of it this way, it's just a couple of years more to becoming a nurse in the u.s. on a more serious note, internship is what you make it. i also lost my drive to continue medicine after clerkship owing to the death of my mother due a robbery. i started internship late (about a month) and while there, i would be carefree- i'd take my time getting to work, i'd go home if i'm from duty regardless of the consequence (just try to be around when it matters- like on duties, so that your group mates won't suffer from your absence), take scoldings and the demerits that come with it with a grain of salt, tons of it. but eventually, after so many make-up sessions, i still finished with enough time to review for the boards. what i'm trying to drive at is internship doesn't have to be that toxic. it really is what you make it. but then if you feel that after 4 years, medicine really isn't your thing, get out now pa lang and don't waste another minute in it. flickers
baka inuulit ko lang opinions ng mga docs dito...so let me just express my opinion in a somewhat rougher way, parang wake-up call kumbaga, hehe. pasensya lang medyo disorganized.first, look into yourself and ask yourself why you went to medical school in the first place. if you really want to be a doctor, maybe na off-focus ka lang ng kaunti. search your reasons, no matter how selfish they may be. whether we really want to halp people, or kahit papogi lang, find the reason that works out for you and never lose sight on the goal. Medicine does not end after clerkship. you have to take internship and will still have to pass the boards. if you really have to take time out to recuperate from stress, do so, pero supplement this with light reading at first then increase your pace gradually. kakalawangin ka talaga kung di ka tuloy-tuloy mag-aral.As to benign vs. toxic internship, ang masasabi ko lang, you'll see more cases in government hospitals (which are usually the toxic internship). so i guess lamang ka sa clinical experience after internship kung magpractice ka na as GP. kung ikukumpara, sa 1 year internship sa government hospital ay parang naginternship ng 5 years sa private hospital. pero lamang ka lang if you're willing to learn from your patients. otherwise, walang advantage ang internship mo. para ka lang robot, nothing gained, all work.in contrast, kung nasa private hospital ka, you will have more time to study since sa sobrang busy ng gov't hospital ay malamang na kulang lagi ang oras mag-aral, and this will somewhat compensate for the lesser clinical material available to you. lilinawin lang natin na reading will not fully compensate for clinical experience. and conversely, ang malaking clinical experience mo will also not compensate for not reading, nor is it an excuse.pasensya, wala akong maibigay na choice for you. anyway, you should be the one to weigh and decide the options. advice lang ito. hehe. basta ang bottomline, it's ok to travel the easy path, just be sure na ang reason mo for doing this is NOT katamaran. hope this helps. good day! rcko21
FBGH or villamor airbase hospital. The 2 most benign training hospitals in the world. Don't get too lax. Study study study during your stay in either of these 2 hospitals. Link to comment
daxmd
Bro, don't lose your focus. go for hospital where you can learn the most, preferably, a government hospital para in case you don't have plans for residency, you'll have some skills necessary for a small GP practice. Link to comment

omegared
Medyo matagal na yung post mo but let me put my 2 cents. Yung internship, residency at fellowship will be another 5-6 years, pag graduate mo chances are you will have to build your practice in the next 2-3 years pero eventually you'll do well, hindi lang yung kikitain mo mas mahalaga, relatively respetado ka pa rin ng mga tao sa paligid mo. Compare mo yun sa next 30-35 years ka na magtatrabaho ka in some company, 6 years is not a very long time. Yun lang, it will not be a walk in the park, medyo mahirap din talaga ang Internship, and you don't make that much except sa private mga hospital na merong konting stipend, St Luke's and Makati Med, that was a while back, don't know now. Where is the best place to go. Internship is not that critical, parang clerkship lang din yan, utusan ka pa rin, but the other guys have a point, kung ayaw mo na magresidency, punta ka sa toxic na hospital and learn as much as you can in the next year. Otherwise, pick a place where you want to go for residency or don sa hindi masyado toxic para di ka maburn out. Good luck. Link to comment
