This was derived from Theocritus, who said "You need to have courage, because tomorrow will be better. While there's life there’s hope, and only the dead have none."

In Greek:  Θαρσείν χρη, τάχ’ αύριον έσσετ’ άμεινον. Eλπίδες εν ζωοίσιν, ανέλπιστοι δε θανόντες.
