Tallest practice player De Guzman hopes to make Ginebra his ‘home’

http://www.foxsportsasia.com/en-ph/news/tallest-practice-player-de-guzman-hopes-make-ginebra-home/

Perhaps, only a few people know De Guzman, the gangling 6-foot-11 slotman, who was once part of the farm team of Far Eastern University in the UAAP, before moving oer to the College of St. Benilde in the NCAA.

Considered a project player since his college days, the long-armed De Guzman was just happy to get the chance to learn from Ginebra players and from the league’s winningest coach as well in Tim Cone.

“Actually grabeng experience yun (practicing at Ginebra) kasi not all of the players in the Philippines pwedeng maka-experience ng ganun,” De Guzman said, shortly after completing day one in the 2016 PBA Draft Combine on Wednesday at the Gatorade Hoops Center in Mandaluyong.

“Swerte lang talaga ko, siguro biniyayaan ako ng Diyos na makasama sa practice team ng Ginebra para mapaghandaan ‘tong draft.”

The 27-year-old De Guzman said he was fortunate to get a call from Cone’s deputy Richard del Rosario, who used to be his coach back at St. Benilde.

“For a long time kasi hindi kami nagkakausap ni coach Richard. Bigla niya akong tinawagan at sabi nya ‘punta ka dito sa Ginebra tomorrow morning. Tryout ka for practice player,'” he recalled.

“Actually sobrang aga nga eh, mga 5 a.m. So Gin-rab ko yung chance, at sa awa ng Diyos biglang nag-stable and at least, five months na kong nagpa-practice sa kanila,” added the soft-spoken Filipino basketball giant.

De Guzman said Ginebra’s warm welcome made his Ginebra experience memorable, citing that seasoned players of the newly-crowned PBA champions never treated him as a practice player.

“Di nila ko tinuring na practice player talaga eh. Parang part na ako ng team saka sa mga scrimmages and sa mga drills, kahit paunahin pa nila ko, hindi nila ko tinuring na ‘o ikaw, dyan ka sa pinakalikod’. Hindi ganun,” said De Guzman.

“Parang part ka na talaga (of the team), kaya nung nag-champion parang part na rin ako nung effort kasi pinagpaguran ko rin yun. Binigay ko rin yung effort ko para makatulong sa kanila,” he added.

No wonder, if given the choice, he’d like to play for Ginebra next season.

“Actually kung ako papipiliin, pipiliin ko talaga Ginebra kasi iba yung atmosphere dun. Welcome ako dun as a family, tapos sanay na ko sa system ni coach Tim at ma-improve ko pa.”

The former St. Benilde big man, however reiterated he’ll give his very best should he eventually end up being drafted and signed by another PBA team.

De Guzman is also confident that with his size, he can be of help to any PBA team come next season, having gained additional basketball experience while playing for the PBA D-League team Mindanao Aguilas.

“Tingin ko dahil yung mga teams ngayon naghahanap ng size, tingin ko may chance akong makuha and alam ko makakatulong ako sa team,” he said.

“First of all, I can bring my length, my height, my skills. Siguro yung hard work na lang at willingness to improve, ayun yung madadala ko sa kanila.”

While technically under the radar of PBA scout, teams looking for an inside presence and height can consider drafting De Guzman who is currently among the 55 hopefuls in this year’s batch of rookie applicants.

For his height, de Guzman is a win-all, lose-nothing type of pick, and a good gamble which any team should be willing to make.
